Description
My first Avatar-inspired deviation!I could have gone for a ground view showing one of the many epic landscapes. But that can always be done later. I don't see much of the space scene seen very early on in the film, so that combined with the fact I promised many people my next 360 "Vue It" work was going to be a space one just meant it was the right theme to choose. It was at least lighter in polygon count than my first two that were very "tree-heavy" bumping their polygon counts into the several millions which resulted in countless crashes. Still had a fair amount with this but comparatively not as bad so bouts of swearing while making this was minimal
As for technical aspects, this was testing a version of Vue that can't actually render planets to its limits, that along with clever use of postwork allowed me to simulate a pretty authentic looking world below the viewer anyway. Rendering would have taken eons for me and so I got help, so I'll jump to credits for help before continuing:
Anyway, this required constant hopping between Vue 7 and Photoshop as some areas needed to be painted on and then brought back into the 3D world again to be rendered with the right amount of distortion and then composed in Photoshop again etc. I won't ramble on, Ill just say it was as hard to do as it looks, so just enjoy it!
Vue it - Pine Shrine
Vue it - Christmas Village
Vue It - Holiday House
Vue It - Haunted Harvest

Thanks! Yeah I try to make it so new features can be found each time. Being in space I had a little less to work with this time, but it makes up for it in a sens eof grand scale So I'm glad you like it

This is brilliant! Well done. Must have been such hard work!

I wished I could program it to do that too, like how even in games now, the circular reflections from a lens flare "move" if you move the view too, that would have been an awesome effect, but I'm certain it can't be done in this
Thanks for faving too!

I can imagine a method of having a transparent lens flare movie clip which is controlled by the distance between the centre of the screen and the centre of the sun (Distance = frame number, 1=close 100=far). It would probably have to be quite a big movie clip though that would also have to rotate depending on where the view was. This would be quite a cumbersome thing to mess around with and you probably had enough trouble as it was!
You're most welcome for the fave!

the planet earth is terrific, the clouds have so much detail and depth, it's amazing. Really cool piece and definitely not what I expected. ;D When you talked about an Avatar-inspired piece I was actually thinking of a classic matte painting-styled pandorra landscape. But this is probably much more original. Well done Lets see if it's going to be a hit
π: 0 β©: 1
Chromattix In reply to ErikShoemaker [2011-05-18 08:21:10 +0000 UTC]
Thanks! Giving a sense of depth to the clouds was crucial, I tried the "cloud map on an outer sphere" technique but I thought this one was too nearby for that to pass off, so using more "real" clouds was a lot more work but that alone made the world below my favourite aspect
I'd like to do a more "standard" artwork of one of the landscape too. But there's always time for that later I guess, who says an artist has to draw one of their favourite things only once

man how have you done the clouds of the bottom planet? with vue? I guess I should get me one...

Chromattix In reply to My-Skies [2011-05-18 08:10:06 +0000 UTC]
You should see it, anyone whose interested in space and inviting, almost surreal alien environments would consider it the holy grail. Many argue the conflict between the character's "sides" is cliche and I admit it is, but that didn't stop me from enjoying a long, breathtaking movie
The clouds on the Pandora itself started out as Vue ones, that's where I needed help from :devsoulshsine: since Vue clouds - although awesome - render very slowly and this needed to be massive resolution. They can be hard to get right from this high up too admittedly, but then again mine is a few versions old and "planet-scale" clouds are more easily done in newer versions. However, these did get a lot of matte-painting over for more precise shapes and details :iconseirousnod:
