Description
My first Avatar-inspired deviation!I could have gone for a ground view showing one of the many epic landscapes. But that can always be done later. I don't see much of the space scene seen very early on in the film, so that combined with the fact I promised many people my next 360 "Vue It" work was going to be a space one just meant it was the right theme to choose. It was at least lighter in polygon count than my first two that were very "tree-heavy" bumping their polygon counts into the several millions which resulted in countless crashes. Still had a fair amount with this but comparatively not as bad so bouts of swearing while making this was minimal
As for technical aspects, this was testing a version of Vue that can't actually render planets to its limits, that along with clever use of postwork allowed me to simulate a pretty authentic looking world below the viewer anyway. Rendering would have taken eons for me and so I got help, so I'll jump to credits for help before continuing:
Anyway, this required constant hopping between Vue 7 and Photoshop as some areas needed to be painted on and then brought back into the 3D world again to be rendered with the right amount of distortion and then composed in Photoshop again etc. I won't ramble on, Ill just say it was as hard to do as it looks, so just enjoy it!

Vue it - Christmas Village
Vue It - Holiday House

yeah, i run on a toshibawith 4 gb of ram, i cant stand bryce because i can be working on something, save it and then when i try to open it later it says it crashed and i lose all my work. if you say vue is bad then i wont even bother...i just want to make backgrounds for my anime without having to hand draw everything

Chromattix In reply to vile72 [2011-06-01 02:15:33 +0000 UTC]
Well if that's a laptop then you'll get crashes as often as me - which is often enough to annoy the shit out of you but still doesn't fully prevent progress. If it's an actual PC though you might have better luck. I'm using a laptop but now I realize laptops aren't built for intensive 3D work so my next computer will have to be an actual PC.
Drawing backgrounds from scratch can be a pain, but it's probably worth trying since Vue can be expensive and temperamental. But mainly because an anime style character and a realistic 3D background wouldn't really fit together well. Anime backgrounds seem to have a more "illustrated" look to them

hey, just to comment on the above, I seince then have gotten a desktop cpu and started using zbrush and blender. I quickly learned some of the early programs I was using were "training wheels" so I finally moved on. How is your work going? continuing I hope.

I had my share of training wheels programs too. I guess those cheap programs are good for something after all
Yeah I'm still doing mine. Though the time I have for it is now being shared among other things so I'm not as active with it.

Oh. My. God. This actually seems better than the scene in the movie itself, but I wouldn't know xD. It's pretty cool since just this morning I watched Avatar, cause I've been watching Avatar The Last Airbender all yesterday, and when I tried to search it this morning, Avatar movie came up, so I just watched it anyway. Feel's like Avatar day
But glad you have the patience and concentration to make something like this cause I seriously just give up after 3 hours or so on a drawing. Even in exams. That's why I suck at studying and the whole 'sit in class and listen to the teacher for nine goddamn periods' scene. xD

Pretty big coincidence there some days you get the same uncommon thing thrown at you more than once and it's really weird
I can't get anything worthwhile done in 3 hours, something like this needs at least 3 weeks Thanks for commenting and faving!

Thanks a lot man, glad you were impressed by it Yeah the render times were awful, I needed 6 2000x2000 squares to make this up, each took about 12 hours!
That's when I got ~SOULSSHINE to help out with the rest, we was able to render the remaining half in just 8 hours I think, what a difference

Wow yeah that sounds about right , we need to set up a VuePort render farm Definitely would have helped with my new one ([link] ) that took 13h , grr.
BTW loved the One Eyed Monster bit that you did before this, strangely hypnotic

Chromattix In reply to TiB69 [2011-05-28 12:23:02 +0000 UTC]
I saw that one when I accepted it into VuePort (I'll be honest and say for months now ALL the work there has been done by me, the other four or so admins have been lazy asses that don't pull their weight at all! ) I noticed with clouds though that metaclouds render much faster than actual cloud layers of the same basic appearance (density, sharpness etc) So I spend more time experimenting with metaclouds than anything and actual spectral cloud layers for me are a last resort for when metaclouds or postworked ones won't cut it
๐: 0 โฉ: 1
TiB69 In reply to Chromattix [2011-05-28 14:32:52 +0000 UTC]
I agree with the metaclouds being faster, also you get so much more control. I used a spectral cloud layer on top of the metaclouds below and I noticed the render sped up after it got past the specral top part of the image. People not pulling their weight eh, even Dax? Im going to have to step it up a notch, have so many ideas , so little time now that I'm a full time teacher
๐: 0 โฉ: 1
Chromattix In reply to TiB69 [2011-05-29 03:21:36 +0000 UTC]
My assumption is that spectral clouds have to calculate an infinite amount of clouds as far as possibly seen (even if most are hidden behind closer ones) while metaclouds only require information to be gathered in the cloud's immediate area. Since even with similar functions for density too, cloud layers are still way slower rendering than metaclouds
The other admins still have no shame uploading their work and putting it into the group (except Dax who I haven't seen in ages) but they never bother with the group messages on any other day - if it weren't for me the messages would be left for weeks. Dax might as well not be on dA anymore either, it's been like - a year since he last showed any real activity. I think he's moved on
๐: 0 โฉ: 1
TiB69 In reply to Chromattix [2011-05-29 13:37:10 +0000 UTC]
I think your assumption is correct as far as the clouds go, will try next render to use only metaclouds and see what the result is.
Sorry to hear that about the admins , if everyone pitches in Im sure the messages etc wont pile up nearly as much. I know Dax is busy with his Quadspinning but I hope he comes back , he was a big inspiration for me to improve my shiat , and so were you. I'm currently loosely following one of his tutorials ..actually I was but now i seem to be playing around with putting SSS on a frog
(will put it up if anything good comes of it)

Yeah, the problem is it would be extremely situational, and a full length movie that took advantage of that would have to be very well done.

Chromattix In reply to JacaByte [2011-05-28 01:59:58 +0000 UTC]
I remember hearing of this new movie technology where the movie is filmed in 360 degree format and you can look around as its playing to get a more personal experience. They did a sample clip with these guys talking in an elevator, instead of you just facing them and watching, you were immersed between the two in conversation and could look either way as they talked like you can in this, sorta like how you do in real life since you naturally turn your head to whoever is currently talking
That would be way cooler than 3D movies I think, since you would get a different experience each time you watch depending on what you were looking at when certain things happen

So, I took my sweet time to write something short at least. Although I expected something more original from you, I still like Avatar enough to enjoy this piece. The brightest point of the whole picture is definitely the surface of Pandora. Can watch the clouds for loooong moments and they never get boring.

Chromattix In reply to JoeyJazz [2011-05-28 01:54:04 +0000 UTC]
Don't worry, I'll do more original or "normal" kinds of space scenes in these eventually. I just wanted the first of them to be this, something a little more "casual" without too many fancy nebula/galaxy/multiple planet effects etc. Thinking of exactly what kind of space scene to do for a future one of these is hard - not because it's difficult, but because I'm left with so many options I would probably do at least one landscape style one again before the next space one, I think standing on the ground does add to the effect in these, which is probably why the first two got a way better response (even before their DD's).
This was also an exercise in how to pull off a planet with actual 3D-looking clouds nearby too, just in case I want to do another for a future space one. Though it was a ton of work so I wouldn't count on one so close all the time

Chromattix In reply to Superiorgamer [2011-05-27 03:34:05 +0000 UTC]
Glad you liked it so much Yeah I modelled the space station, took a long time and the modele isn't even that complicated (you couldn't get much closer than this before some signs of low-polyness show through
) But it was enough to get that spot filled
Yeah these (well, except this one for some reason) often get a way bigger response than my normal 2D art. I still do normal art more though since these take weeks to make at the least, and I can't sell prints or commissions of them either so they contribute to my reputation a lot but to my earnings none

So this is in my opinion your best space art!
How can it be that this is unnaturally. It looks so real as all your works do.
So Iยดm using Vue too but I feel terrible if I see things like that.
You are amazing. Your work is amazing too!
And I am sure you hear things like that often enough.
My question is : how did you do those clouds?
๐: 0 โฉ: 1
Chromattix In reply to SWmaster [2011-05-27 02:21:37 +0000 UTC]
Thankyou! I think it's probably my coolest space scene too, even without the interaction I think Pandora itself is the most realistic planet I've done (at the expense of working on it all week lol, normally that's how long a whole space scene takes, not just one planet )
The clouds did have a lot of poswtork. I still don't know how to get great clouds in Vue and I'm put off from trying since they take too long for me to render it just as a test too (a small "preview" render of just part of the world took ten minutes!) It's actually the only aspect of Vue I don't regularly play with, since at least terrains, plants, materials etc all don't take eons to render so yeah, some clouds for the hurricane use an image-map to drive their distribution, but many extra details and unusual formations were just postworked in

SWmaster In reply to Chromattix [2011-05-27 14:23:27 +0000 UTC]
Yeah your absolutly right!
What I need is a powerful computer to realize the most insane and breathtaking ideas which are floating around in my head
But all these things have their price!
And I have not enough money to buy a much better computer.
But Photoshop does a good job in the postwork
So it is bearable

yes and i can say i'm not disapointed that i waited like 2 minutes loading and then get it to lag abit! it was worth it, but maybe if you had done a flash swf file smaller it would maybe have use less time for us to load it, and we still could zoom in it to see the details, without having to decrease the quality

W-O-W. Wow. I've never seen something like this. I only clicked it because the thumbnail said "interactive", so I thought it might be. Dragging the image a little, not knowing what to expect it to do led to a very trippy experience that left me amazed. This gorgeous thing exceeded every expectation I had for computers. I was going to ask how many years it took, but I read the description. Only one year... wow.

Thankyou! Glad it went above and beyond all expectations, I guess many interactive things here are pretty basic, given how hard they are to do for many
This actually didn't take a year, that was only how long ago my source of inspiration came. It really took a few weeks, but of very intense work

ToddNTheShiningSword In reply to Chromattix [2011-05-26 15:12:45 +0000 UTC]
This went beyond more than just artistic expectations. It went beyond my expectations for computing. I have never looked at my laptop and been amazed at what I was doing with it like I was when I was looking at your amazing art on it. Do you know how awesome you are that you can make this?
Even if it took weeks of intense work? I was watching the game last night and they were comparing Dirk Nowitzki to Larry Bird, but he was humble when they compared him to such greatness. I was thinking about that and this. You deserve a comparison almost like that, because you're amazing if you produced that wonderful map from scratch.
