That will be probably myster of a day. No, I don't have anything against this girl, or it'll be better to keep for myself what I really think, but yeah, considering dA being site made for art purposes and it has like nothing, literally NOTHING of being artsy, it shouldn't made to front page. But well, I guess some peoples are enough happy with picture of cute girl to call it an art. The other thing is that it's nothing more than random snapshoot which would be perfect for photobucket. And dA is not photobucket obviously even though some people seem to not realize that =.=

It's not as if the front page is full of great stuff. It's usually full of cartoons and people doing cosplay. Not actually anything i'd call art.

do you want to know what makes them art? DeviantArt is a website for ART. If deviantArt have a category for cosplays and cartoons that makes them art! a cosplay costum takes time to ajust and to make, and to take a good picture of it!
that also goes to the cartoons, people think in the characters, they stylise them, make jokes, and they must be very inteligent persons to do it, other way it wont work.
you are an obvious not an artist to not define what art is, art is to transmit a feeling, good or bad. and then we have several levels of art.

I take it from your lengthy and thoughtout reply that you have checked that DeviantArt does not have a category for Photography>People and Portraits>Self Portraits. As if it did it would mean that this photo was art, by your definition. And all those people who say it isn't are wrong, by your definition of art.
If we also go with your second definition art is to transmit a feeling, good or bad then her mySpace-esque photo is still art as it elicits anger in some and happyness in others. Unfortunelty this second definition makes cosplay or cartoons not art, as i they make me feel neither good nor bad. But that would mean that art is subjective and my original statement, to which you initially responded to, holds.

I was defending cosplays and cartoons, not this photo. I believe this is not a front page photo. it is art? yes, but not front page art.
however, I haven't checked the categorys is true, but I don't have to know them all, but I know that there is one for spontanious portaits, that is what this image represents, and people are free to post self portaits! I decide what I think is art. I do not rely on the opinions of others. This is the point i'm trying to make all along that art is subjective and people may not think that this self portrait as worthy art. Much in the same way that i don't consider cartoons and dressing up as art. I don't wander around on Halloween, thinking such great art is to be found. You have already argued that the time taken to create the outfit etc implies that it is art, but surely this girl has spent time choosing her clothes and applying make-up which would make it just as "arty" as cosplay.
You are quoting Tolstoy and philosophy as if it is fact. Philosophy is simply an opinion and not proven to be undistputable fact. You've also aligned with Tolstoy who, in the very same book, suggests that the work of Beethoven is not art. That the work of Shakespeare and Wagner are counterfeit art.
According to Tolstoy, art schools create counterfeit artists and Christianity is the only true salvation for the art world. You also mention that it is impossible to define art yet spout out Tolstoy's criteria that he proposed to identify true art from counterfeit. So either it is impossible to define or can be defined based upon the sincerity of the artist. I simply do not submit to his views on art. Art is not like Science, although no doubt under Tolstoy's volumous definition it will be consider to be some of the finest, hence not fact.
I must be a 13 year old? So far i have refrained from hurling insults at you; dealing with you in a fair an just manner. However, you in one post you have potentially labeled me stupid, mad and immature. I would hazard a guess and say that you are closer to a 13 year old than I. I have at least managed to develop my own opinion, unlike yourself who seems to have choosen to live in the ghost of some bitter communist who derided his own works.

Yes I am closer to 13 than you, I am 17 
What I know is that I make cartoons for little jornal, and I used the same methots of creation as in a painting. I have thougth about it, and created it from some place it has never existed before (but in cartoons I use ink, or photoshop. In oil or acrilics I use a brush and a canvas, same way!)
make up is a art, dressing is a art, posing is a art. art is in everything! every place you look! look to your computer! it was drawed and created by someone, it is art! look to a chair, look to a house, look to the streets, look to the people!
Art is human, art is us, art is the creation!

Certainly buying cosplay in eBay then just photographing yourself with a cellphone camera requires no creativity, but if you make it yourself and snap a picture in a creative composition, it is art. The fashion industry is insulted by you considering making clothes uncreative :/

So working hard to recreate a fictional drawn character (which is itself usually thought of as art) in your own fashion with your tools and imagination isn't art? I don't think its a matter of whether or not this photo is art... The actual question here should be WHAT is art, and that is much too broad a subject to debate here. For the sake of argument however, we can try to explain WHY people think this is art. Personally I wouldn't consider this piece art... However, that is my opinion and on the small scale, it doesn't matter. The only thing that matters is that this piece evokes some kind of emotion. Whether it be pleasant or annoying makes no difference, enough people felt enough emotion to push this piece to the front page, and good for the artist!

There is art for art's sake, and there's "ordinary" art. I believe this image to be art because it gives the viewer what it wants to see. Which, apparently is a cute girl making a funny face.
Do I think this is the best piece of art submitted in the last 24 hours? Nawh. But that's just how a popularity-based system works and at least this image is interesting.
