Description
I've been taking a fair number of pictures as I've been working over the past few days on my Jack Frost Cosplay. I still have a ways to go, but here is what I've gotten done so far.(Comments, Image by Image basis)
1. I bought a piece of white Styrofoam. God awful stuff, but it did the job. Helped me get the angles and make the hook part of the staff more light weight. I then used floral wire (not pictured) and connected the pieces before gluing them together in place (I used SEVERAL wires per piece).
2. These are the pants I purchased, from walmart. You can see the before on the left side and the after (painted) on the right.
3. Totally out of order, but this is my staff as it stands now. It has 3 coats of paper mache, and about five layers of paint. It still is missing the elwire (as it hasn't come in the mail yet).
4. Also out of order. This is my staff after the last layer of paper mache. This layer I took a lot of time to make texture with it (which helped in the painting a lot).
5. The beginning of coat one of paper mache. I worked on this coat for two days before I finished it. Things to note: paper mache does not stick to that type of foam without a fight. The paper mache strengthened the hook pieces a lot once it was dry.
6. A detail shot of the second layer of paper mache. I wasn't worried about making it perfect because I knew that I was going to cover it with a 3rd, very textured layer.
7. Be sure to take a trip to McDonald's and buy a happymeal, it could have one of these bad boys inside (he shoots little round cardboard snowflakes).
8. My staff after two layers of paint. I painted with a medium brown to start (due to the fact I had the most medium brown and I knew I was going to need a base coat), and then completely painted over it with a dark brown.
9. This is me, being weird, because I can, and I don't have a roommate (basically I'm wearing everything as completed as it is at this very moment).
10. A detail shot of the jacket. This was just taken from a different picture (not shot specifically). I basically zoomed it to 100% and then cropped a section out of it just to show what it looks like closeup.
11. Movies (percy jackson and the olympians) are great while you wait for layers of paint or paper mache to dry. Featured are two of my friends (one of which will be working on a toothiana outfit for the same con I'm wearing jack to!)

Oh my gosh, you are missing out! Paper mache is done by taking strips of paper (in various sizes, but usally 2 inches by 4inches is a good starting point) and dipping them in a mixture of glue and water. You then take the glue soaked paper and apply them to your object. When they dry, they'll be a hard coating you can sand, paint, etc.
Various things can be substituted for the glue, such as flour (what you cook with), modgepodge, and so on.
Google can tell you more then I can!

Okay, sorry this took a few days to reply to, I was out of town.
I used an exacto knife (but I bet a hotwire/box cutter would work much better), and just shaved bits off the corners. Kind of like peeling a cucumber in a way. You just keep taking bits off until it gets more round.

DO you have a tutorial on making the staff?

CosmicalFox In reply to Silverfang98 [2013-01-06 23:55:19 +0000 UTC]
I unfortunately don't. I remade it and still didn't make a tutorial due to rushing tog et it done before a convention this past weekend.
I can definitely answer any questions you may have though.

How did you paint the pants, exactly?

CosmicalFox In reply to Silverfang98 [2013-01-07 04:22:21 +0000 UTC]
I used a large rough brush (from walmart that I got in a pack of 10), and just put a tiny amount of paint on it. I then basically dry-brushed the paint on around the edges. It gave it that distressed look and helped me to match the color closer to the actual jack frost. A bit of advice: less is more when it comes to painting. Acrylic paint is extremely difficult (or impossible) to get out of clothes, so always start somewhere not noticable, and only start with a small amount of paint. Building on more as you see fit.

Okay, thanks! What type of color did you use?
And would it posibly help to water down the paint a bit?

CosmicalFox In reply to Silverfang98 [2013-01-07 21:09:47 +0000 UTC]
In this case I just used a darkish brown color, nothing too abnormal. I was using really cheap paint, so I didn't water it down. High pigment paint (like nice artists paints) may need to be watered down.

awesome thanks for posting this so i can make mine hahaha is the entire staff all foam then carved and then paper mache? XDDDD wasnt sure if the pole part was haha xD

The polepart is actually PVC pipe. Honestly the foam idea works, but I wouldn't be rough with it before you put on SEVERAL layers of paper mache. As far as attaching the foam to the PVC, I used PLENTY of wire wrapped really tightly around the foam and threaded through a hole in the PVC. I also put some of the wire through the foam for added stability. I'm actually remaking my staff currently and doing it quite differently.
For the new staff I'm using a broom handle (the broom part broke off, to be honest I just use a lot of materials I have lying around my house). I then drilled into the broom handle, and added more wooden pieces cut at angles to make the hook part of the staff. I used holes in each of these, and really strong glue to attach them using wire. (The piece of wire fits inside the holes on both parts and is sealed with the glue). I'm not papermache-ing over it. I already like this method better, as it feels less delicate.
long comment is long. D:

AHH OKAY THANKS cause I am about to start mine XD so how are you getting thr texture without the paper mache? XDDD Cause wont it just be wooden flat peices and a pole? XD hahaha oh god I fear starting this thing so much GAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh, I am paper maching over it! Sorry that I didn't make that clear.
I'm doing at least 4 or 5 layers on the hook part for stability, and 2 on the center pole. Hope that helps.

okay then dabbed with brown paint everywhere? haha thank you for helping me last thing I wanna do is mess up and waste all that money hahah XDDD I think the hardbest part with be attatching and shaping the foram to make it 3D for the hook my biggest worry haha but maybe if i make it fat enough with paper mache it till look less flat haha since styrofoam is fat and its hard to carve the roundness on non edeges

CosmicalFox In reply to Larina-Satome [2012-12-24 20:12:24 +0000 UTC]
I literally just cut the foam into maybe 2inchx2inch segments (that's for width and height, as far as length I just made it however long I wanted each piece of the hook to be). I then just took an exacto blade and carved the edges way down.
As far as painting: I did two layers of the darkest brown iw anted first, then I drybrushed a lighter brown, and then drybrushed an icy blue. Hope that helps.

CosmicalFox In reply to RainiePandora [2012-12-19 15:26:56 +0000 UTC]
For this one, I used a piece of 10foot PVC pipe cut in 2 (3/4inch diameter). I had it left over from another project.
I'm actually going to pass this staff off to my suitemate back at school though, and make one that is more appropriate for my height (as this one is wayyyy too tall for me).

looking good! how did you do the painted texturing on the pants? also, what did you use for the cord that's wrapped around the ankles?
π: 0 β©: 1
CosmicalFox In reply to Nebulous62 [2012-12-13 07:38:40 +0000 UTC]
Thanks!
The pants were just done with a large paint brush. I just put VERY little paint on the brush and really just scrubbed it around to get that texture.
The chords on the pants are actually strips of a large white t-shirt, that were cut so that they would stretch. To get them brown, I just watered down the same brown paint I used on the pants and dipped it in them and then wrung them out. Making a sort of faded version of the same color.
