Description
he'd delight in saying that every family was like an ass he he was the biggest hole. he'd take every stance that would infuriate a person just to make them mad enough to hit him... that's when he'd grin the widest, knowing it would piss off the person all the moreas a kid, he'd climb on the house and jump off the roof, letting out a blood curdling cry... he'd land, doing the paratrooper roll and be off running before grandma could get out the kitchen door, scared to death and ready to beat the living daylight out of him.
he was drafted into the army and went to Vietnam. I never heard him tell a story, because he never wanted to revisit it. the two stories i heard was about a night ambush on his camp and everybody shooting at everything, not knowing what they hit; in the morning, they looked through the bodies and he recognized a local barber that cut his hair the day before. the other one isn't really a story, more how he left... he was the point man on a platoon and several days later, he was the only man who came back. his left shin was full of shrapnel and he'd always walk with a limp after that. he received his 2nd purple heart and was due for a silver star, but his commanding officer died before finishing the paperwork. there is suppose to be footage of him as honor guard for Nixon (he was at the inauguration; coverage featured the protesters, so grandma never saw him on the news). while in D.C., he through his medals over the white house fence
he loved golf so much that he got a degree in agronomy from penn state and became a heads groundskeeper. i never saw him play, just heard him complain about all the idiots he had working under him
he loved j.r.r. tolkien and terry pratchett... that's one of the last things i heard he really enjoyed was reading pratchett novels (and watching reruns of stargate SG1)... growing up, one of the few VHS he had was an animated version of 'return of the king' (different family would give him appliances and crap that he never used... more to keep other people busy if the got the idea to visit him). The last gift i gave him was a record for the film i found... he had a record player, so i don't know if he ever listened to it, but he looked genuinely surprised to receive it.
he was a passive-aggressive jerk that never took anything for granted. he appreciated every little thing anyone did and would make people remember every little fault they ever did. i was never religious, but he was raised presbyterian, so i think that's where he got those values... everything you did mattered and stays forever.
he'd watch yankee games to see them lose and every time they did, he'd wear his yankees hat.
he was a registered democrat so he could vote for the worst representative and make it easier for the republicans to win.
he was an eagles fan... he disliked referees because he knew holding could be called on every play, so it was just them interfering on behalf of the preferred team. he'd watch dallas games and root for injuries.
he had a clown nose in his car to avert road rage... any time he felt angry, he'd put on the nose and stare down the person who pissed them off (he always wanted them to think "what's this clown doing?")
he was the closest thing to a father i had. he gave me a house. he helped me when i was trouble. he took me fishing by a riverbank. he taught me to shave. he loved to give grief about not watering a plant (can't you tell it's thirsty?) and always thought he could guilt like an old jewish lady (which he couldn't... he'd find something wrong with everything, so you know his approval would never come)
my uncle died today.

I know that this is coming late, but I'm sorry to hear this.
I know I'm just some random person, but I also know what it's like to lose someone close. Calling it "rough" is an understatement.

thank you for the consideration. it means something to know someone read through this
should have as a follow-up... found out he was on oral diabetes medication for over a year, and during that time he increased his drinking and smoking (had quit in the 90's, but jumped on the vap pen, then onto doing cigars). also, he had just come back from his annual 2 weeks in the Carribean with his spouse's family (lucky we didn't have to extradite the body). he went the way he wanted to go

Of course.
I'm glad to hear that his final days were good ones.
