It's only been a couple of months, but I've fully transitioned over to Clip Studio Paint! I'm slowly working my way through the missions for kamochiruu's art class - this time, I'm practicing drawing clothes and folds (and of course, drawing Yao's luxurious hair and skin while I'm at it). I wasn't happy with the illustration I did of him last year, so I redrew him - hope he is more beautiful now .

Character Notes:
Like his siblings, Baiqiao Yaoshe (白橋妖蛇, meaning “demonic snake of the white bridge”) possesses an Inheritance (formerly known as bloodline ability) that allows him to borrow the abilities of any being he's formed a close bond with. He can utilize the same linkage to share his powers with others. Considered the most well-connected member of the Baiqiao Royal Family, he spends a lot of time forging relationships both within and outside of Axon.

(Don't be fooled by his suspicious smile, he is a very friendly person! Just come a little closer and you will see ).

Setting Notes:

Instances
Instance users are classified according to the mechanisms and effects of their powers. Because Instances are not a fully understood phenomenon, classification is loosely based on the effects of one's powers. As an Instance user grows in power, they may develop abilities outside of their own Type, or even switch over to a different Type. This suggests that Instances are neither discrete nor fixed in nature.

Constructor-type Instances grant the user the power of materialization. A Constructor's power level is partly determined by the scope, materialization speed, and duration of their constructs, with the highest-ranked Constructors having successfully manifested entire realms from their imagination alone. To avoid the risks of an uncontrolled construct, Constructors are recommended to have a thorough understanding of what they aim to create. Example: Mu Kurosawa (Aisling Jespersen).

Getter-type Instances allow the user to obtain and share information. Most Getters have below-average combat abilities and tend to take on support roles. However, sufficiently powerful Getters may develop skills such as mind reading, predicting the future, telepathy, and seeing their past lives. Skilled Setters are able to block Getters from extracting their information through a technique known as Masking. Example: Li Sixiang.

Linker-type Instances depend on the wielder's affinities and relationships. For example, the Baiqiao family Inheritance allows its members to 'lend out' and 'borrow' the abilities of beings they have formed close bonds with. There are also Linker-type Instances that allow the wielder to selectively affect beings based on certain rules and relationships (ex. only affect beings whom the wielder considers as an enemy). Due to their rarity, Linkers are one of the least understood Types. Example: Rai Kurosawa.

Setter-type Instances are mind-based and manifest according to the user's will and world view. They allow the wielder to alter any impermanent aspect of reality, including feelings, perceptions, the physical world (ex. age, atomic bonds), sensations, and thoughts. The scope of a Setter's powers are usually restricted to their present life - they cannot alter the cycle of reincarnation or influence their previous or future lives. Example: Makoto Kurosawa (Zhen Xinyi).

Primitive-type Instances are environment-based and allow users to control and replenish their Memory using natural and/or artificial elements. With sufficient skill and practice, Primitives can also transform themselves into their respective elements, making them impervious to most attacks. They tend to have a significant combat advantage when fighting against Nils. Example: Sanna Rhys.

Inheritances
In addition to one's own Instance, one can potentially receive a second Instance, commonly referred to as an Inheritance. Because the exact nature of Instance abilities is not completely understood, most attempts to obtain an Inheritance end in failure.

The strength of the Royal Families is effectively determined by their Inheritance, with the Rhys and Baiqiao Inheritances being considered the most powerful.

Rosenfeld is the least diverse family, as all of its members are related by blood. While this makes their members' Instance abilities more predictable, the Rosenfeld Inheritance is notoriously difficult to counter. The family is known to disown any member who fails to receive the family's Inheritance.

Kurosawa is considered the weakest family, as few if any members possess Inheritances. In terms of military strength, the family has historically been carried by its Imperial Princes and Princesses. Originally a relatively pacifistic family, Kurosawa became more militaristic after the current Empress ascended to the throne. Under her leadership, Kurosawa has prioritized the recruitment of scientists, engineers, military personnel, and high-ranking Instance users at the expense of the liberal arts.

I changed a lot of details about the Baiqiao family and Linkers while developing Yao's and Sheng Feng's backstories. Why Baiqiao is associated with animals and why Axon is closed off will be revealed in the future .

Yao is a basically a villain who knows the value of having connections and at least a passable reputation lol. Though some find him suspicious, no one has proof that he's done anything nefarious. Though their strategies are somewhat similar, he is not just a less moral version of Xinyi.
