Description Another mini tutorial, these were taken with a fixed aperture, fixed lighting conditions and the camera on a tripod, this is just to show how the addition of extension tubes effects image size and also the exposure times, the bigger the distance between the lens and the camera the less light gets to the sensor so the longer the exposure.

I find the extension tubes work better on prime lenses rather then zoom lenses, there are some complex formula's that can be used to work everything out, but I find it best to just experiment. The extension tubes I use are auto focus capable but I always manually focus when using them due to the lack of light the auto focus usually struggles.

Best in full view.

Thank you very much for that. I was thinking of obtaining this setup and wondered what the results would be. Does flash help with the exposure times? Obviously, but how well?

Hi they I find them great to use, I use them most of the time in natual light with the camera mounted on a tripod so the longer exposure time does not matter that much to me, you will need to remeber that these push the lens further away from the body of the camera so direct flash from the camera will have a reduced effect of the flash, I have used flash but found that I have had to bounce it from the ceiling, and you can always up the ISO if you need a faster shutter speed, have fun

What about a macro flash ring? One with the option of dialing down the flash power? That work?

That would work, you may have a problem if you use a full stack with a 50mm length as the focal lenght is so mall that the front of the lens will almost touch the subject.

Thank you, there are lots of combinations you can use between but this should give a rough idea I have heard of quite a few people giving up on the extension tubes but to me they are a really useful tool

It is a cheaper and more flexible then a fixed length macro lens, and you can use them on the macro lens too

now that opens new possibilties. I was already considering getting a close-up filter for the macro lens.

They work well together, and to go really extreme you can add a Raynox onto the front
