DeviantArt is constantly evaluating better ways to serve our community, from new features to smaller updates and bug fixes. Today, we're making a change to the format of profile URLs that will have a positive impact moving forward. In order to better serve you, we’re changing profile URLs from username.deviantart.com to deviantart.com/username. 


Don't worry, your old URLs will still work, and you can continue to use them. Your old links/URLs will always redirect to your new ones.

We know a lot of deviants are attached to their URLs, so the decision to make this change was not done lightly. Part of the decision-making process involved surveying active deviants, and we discovered the overall sentiment was fairly neutral. Most people did not strongly prefer one or the other — as long as old URLs redirected. But, most importantly, we believe this change will be beneficial for you.

Why Changing URLs Is for the Better

  • The new URLs will likely increase your traffic: Based on Search Engine Optimization (SEO) experts we’ve consulted with and also other sites that have made the switch, moving away from subdomains is likely to increase overall site traffic from search engines—this means more traffic to your Profiles and deviations.

  • Subdomains cause many technical challenges, inhibiting site improvement and performance. Browsers treat subdomains like different, individual sites for security reasons and, because of this, more and more website functionality is being limited to working with a single domain. Working around these restrictions makes building new features and maintaining old ones complicated, increasing the time it takes our engineers to complete projects. It also creates “buggy” circumstances while navigating the site. For example, you might have noticed that it sometimes shows the wrong artist’s name in the URL when using the “next” and “previous” buttons while browsing artwork in someone’s galleries — this is a technical limitation that is imposed by browsers for security reasons and was not possible to work around until now.

    Another thing I want is more space in the different fields (eating, drinking, playing, etc.) that can appear under each journal entry. Right now, it's 50 characters. Could you please increase it to 100 or more? I couldn't put what I was playing when I posted my last journal entry. I wanted it to say "SORRY!, Mastermind, and/or UNO, depending on the day...", but I could only get "SORRY!, Mastermind, and/or UNO, depending on the d". There wasn't enough room!

    still waiting on ya'll to make some much needed PRIVACY changes and having the option to hide collections/make profiles hidden. the amount of abuse and stalking that goes on that dA allows by not making changes is insane. do I really have to let my account get perma-devactivated that I've had for 8 years because there is no other way to maintain privacy other than a complete deactivation?     there's one major reason from a purely technical perspecitve that makes pages worse than subdomains, and that's this:


    Suppose you have a global "gallery" page (you don't but let's say you do), then you'd have to tell the webserver to treat website.com/user/gallery different from website.com/gallery, adding extra logic to the server to handle this.

    In the case of a subdomain however, you don't need to add any additional logic, because user.website.com/gallery piggybacks on top of the existing code.


    As for what improvements I'd like, simple: Support SVG files already

    What improvements to DeviantArt profiles would you like to see?

    1. The ability to customize profiles for non-core members as well (yes I know non-core people can use basic html to customize but that still looks pretty bland; I want to be able to add a nice custom background for my profile, the same way core members put nice background on custom boxes)

    I know this is something not everyone agrees with but personally I think it should be done by DA. Usually, when non-core people say they want customization, core people respond with "tough luck, u should pay lol" or something along those lines. However, what people don't realize is that the majority of people on deviantart are kids and they are too young to have jobs, therefore, they don't have a salary/money so they can't buy core.

    2. The ability to delete comments (things like "hidden by owner" doesn't look very good)

    3. The ability to upload animations in mp4 format. Currently, the only way to upload animations is in gif or flash format but flash is outdated and gif ruins the quality of an animation. I know it is possible to upload mp4 films but in order to do that, one must be accepted into the film community, which is easy for professionals but hard for a beginner, because if the beginner doesn't reach the quality level that's expected, he/she won't be able to submit mp4 files. This is a HUGE turn off for beginners. I think it's a bit discriminatory to say "you can't upload videos cause you're not good enough". I think everyone deserves to upload animations regardless of their skill level.

    4. Put back DDs somewhere easier to notice! In the past, getting a DD was a huge honor and people's art would get tons of attention/views if it got a daily deviation. However, today the reward gets almost no recognition around the site because people have to manually look them up to see them. Newcomers would have no idea where they are. What's the point of someone getting a DD if their work still isn't noticed?

    Can you add or do so that we can edit the featured page (in our gallery), so we can quick and easy arrange them from newest to oldest? I'm getting tired of when they are not in the right order and it gives me a lot of work because I got to empty it sometimes to fix this Featured page up so it looks better.

    Also please put the +fav and the download above the adds thing (at submissions), because I very often have to refresh the page to be able to see/use those buttons, because the adds covers them up.

    Not trying to change your mind, and I'm not on anyone's side, as I have yet to see the results myself... but just in case it gives you a bit of hope... Wix recently bought out DA... before that point DA was petty much dead, and likely the staff where likely over worked and under paid (going on assumptions here, but if DA was struggling, staff cuts and such normally are the first thing to go) At this time I think we need to give them a bit of a chance. It's a new company heading things, so we have yet to see whether they are like the old DA or not.


    Even if the staff are the same, the same workers often can do completely different jobs under different managers. If they are treated better, and wix starts to put more into the site, they too might gain the hope they need to really do the best they can do. And if wix is willing to put more staff on they might not be so over worked.


    If staff where not paying attention like people keep saying, a lot of the reason is likely because they too had little hope. They where probably over worked and many of them just as unhappy as the users. So maybe we can give them a chance to show us whether it will be different this time.

     - More controls on some users' accounts: we're fed up to see pov of some users male and female genitals on the explore section.

    These pics are not pieces of art, it's just perverts behaviours from some exhib or voyeur people.

    It's just disgusting, and it's not art. And some young users here, who are less than 18 or 21 yo can see it.


     - More controls on gallery from users that post pics they don't own, most of them never credit the autors.

    They are simply art stealers!


     - I understand that premium membership is the way that Deviantart keeps existing, but unhappily I can't afford it, even to change my user name.
    It would be great that Da allows free users, even only once a year, to change their user name.

  • I'd like for sub-sub-folders to become a thing for CORE members. Some of us storyboard and create worlds that sometimes need folders within folders within the main folder, and that option isn't available. It'd be so awesome if this became an option in the future! I know many deviants who create comics and stories would agree with me that we'd all be very excited and happy if this ever becomes an option!
