DeviantArt is constantly evaluating better ways to serve our community, from new features to smaller updates and bug fixes. Today, we're making a change to the format of profile URLs that will have a positive impact moving forward. In order to better serve you, we’re changing profile URLs from username.deviantart.com to deviantart.com/username. 


Don't worry, your old URLs will still work, and you can continue to use them. Your old links/URLs will always redirect to your new ones.

We know a lot of deviants are attached to their URLs, so the decision to make this change was not done lightly. Part of the decision-making process involved surveying active deviants, and we discovered the overall sentiment was fairly neutral. Most people did not strongly prefer one or the other — as long as old URLs redirected. But, most importantly, we believe this change will be beneficial for you.

Why Changing URLs Is for the Better

  • The new URLs will likely increase your traffic: Based on Search Engine Optimization (SEO) experts we’ve consulted with and also other sites that have made the switch, moving away from subdomains is likely to increase overall site traffic from search engines—this means more traffic to your Profiles and deviations.

  • Subdomains cause many technical challenges, inhibiting site improvement and performance. Browsers treat subdomains like different, individual sites for security reasons and, because of this, more and more website functionality is being limited to working with a single domain. Working around these restrictions makes building new features and maintaining old ones complicated, increasing the time it takes our engineers to complete projects. It also creates “buggy” circumstances while navigating the site. For example, you might have noticed that it sometimes shows the wrong artist’s name in the URL when using the “next” and “previous” buttons while browsing artwork in someone’s galleries — this is a technical limitation that is imposed by browsers for security reasons and was not possible to work around until now.

    I think it would be great if we can standardize the categories to submit groups by? That way we don't have to keep submitting our artworks to each group one by one, it's pretty tedious. For different kinds of art groups, we can activate/deactivate the relevant subfolders (eg. An Animal Art Group will have a traditional & digital & species folder, while an Anime Art Group will only need a traditional & digital folder etc)

    Improve submiting to groups, it's bit retarded that in mentions I have groups that I'm NOT part since literally years, meanwhile groups that I'm interested in I need type EACH TIME.
    Free customization of profiles. I am aware that it's DA way to suck cash from customers but still. I was premium member, gived out premium memberships as well and then I decided to stop because DA is very expensive site.
    And I pay just to be able make my profile pretty? Eh no thanks, I prefear spend cash somewhere else instead and as example buy commissions from artists.

    I know this is something not everyone agrees with but personally I think it should be allowed by DA. Usually, when non-core people say they want customization, core people respond with "tough luck, u should pay lol" or something along those lines. However, what people don't realize is that the majority of people on deviantart are kids and they are too young to have jobs, therefore, they don't have a salary/money so they can't buy core.

    I know non-core people can use basic html to customize but that still looks pretty bland; I want to be able to add a nice custom background for my profile, the same way core members put nice background on custom boxes.

    Personally, I'd like to for all us plebs to get full-size featured deviations again, but I can't imagine that's going to happen.


    More pressing though, if you're on someone's profile and you click on one of the deviations in the "newest deviations" section, you can't go through their whole gallery by just using the "next" button. You can only see, like 3 or 4 and then it's greyed-out. Is this a "feature"? It's super-annoying.

    seconding everyone who wants access to core services without needing core itself; i'd appreciate seeing the option to pay for some services individually rather than requiring core just to access them. core offers so few features i actually care about it's not worth justifying spending the money on for me, though there are a couple things i liked about having core i'd consider buying on their own or part of a smaller package.

    i think the change makes it look less professional and less personalized... but in the long run i dont think it matters too much

    the only thing id really like to see in the future is being able to have deactivated URLs. i deleted my dA in like 8th grade and i still use that username everywhere else... i want it back !!

    I liked the old URLS much better too - as many others have already commented on here, the old URLs give out a much more individualized look for the artist. If the purpose of this change was to increase traffic for artists with low numbers, putting Deviantart in front of the username won't make much of a difference. My guess is that only DA users who are already popular would still dominate the search results even with the new URL.
