Description 40" x 30" oil on board. So this was just a blast to do my first piece that is completley done in oils and I have decided that if I had never done digital art I would not know what the hell to do. I think this one so far is the closest in quality to my digital pieces. It was so much fun to do I just cant wait to start the next one.I made a huge ornate frame for this so I think I might also add a link of this framed as well because the frame is a whole more couple days work in itself, so check back next week for a link to the framed image. Thanks again all of you for viewing!

In love with this work! I enjoyed your gallery very much, i love all your bright colors..yes, oils..they are so forgiving and fun to use..i have tried to use them, but cant stick to it..takes to long to dry. You are a master with them...a genius!

Hey , thank you so much! I use winnsor and newton galkyds, they have a resin in them so they dry alot faster but still have the blend-ability, it takes about 24 hours for them to dry, you should try them!

Wow, Kurtis, your art has changed since the last time I saw your stuff (how long ago?). The background is still vague, but the rendering is much better. Instead of random leaves floating in space it all looks grounded. The effect is wispy and surreal, quiet and obviously not the focus, but helping with the mood and not taking the notice away from the centerpiece. So even though it's not linear or realistic (my preferred as you'll probably remember, or not), I like the overall presentation.

Everything is so colorful! The dress' shading and blending is nice, and the style is cool. I like that you still have a moody feel to your piece without all the dark coloring in muted greens. The lacing is great. The dew, the wing tips, the shine on the woman, and the Bubbles! My god Kurtis, The Bubbles! That is the attention to details I always knew you were capable of, but too in a hurry to go for. Although you did put allot of effort into round objects and bubbles, just not grass and occasionally lace.

I don't think I ever told you this, because at the time you were going for a more realistic approach to anatomy, but I've always liked the way you drew eyes. The problem at the time was that, while pretty, they were too big and out of proportion, and you wanted to at least be able to paint eyes 'correctly'. What I liked was your 'big' eyes never looked cute. Pretty, calculating, knowing, Mature: that's what I felt they were like. Nice juxtaposition to what is generally thought a female with large eyes entails.

I think I read that your going to showcase this somewhere? That's splendid, I was actually walking by some galleries today thinking about you, and I think this would fit in nicely with some of the exhibits.

Congrats on a beautiful job with the oils. Can't wait for the next!

I love the arms and the dress, especially. The tattoos are convincing. However, the hands looks like they need a bit of work and more definition, specifically her left hand, where the wrist meets the thumb.

Thank you so much for inspiring me to pick up oil painting again. I gave up after a failed attempt years ago, but I'm dedicated to practicing now. If you have some spare time, I'd love to hear about your process a bit. I was wondering if you do an underpainting/lay down a background color and let it dry first? or is this all wet on wet? Especially the white strands in her hair are lovely! Are these applied last over wet or dry paint? Thanks so much for your time

darklyartistic In reply to enchantedgal [2008-01-03 18:52:39 +0000 UTC]

hello!!!!!!! Well thank you so very very much. So of course I have a little bit of time. I do not start out with an underpainting because it infects the pure color I use on top to get that neon affect. If anything I put a bright pastel color as a back drop but not on the figure I always leave that space white. I paint in layers so it is never wet on wet except if I want subtle shading but other then that I wait for each layer to dry. The only way I can describe it is if you have done digital painting, it is the same process you work from the base up and the reason digital paintings can get such great deapth in such little time is that you do not have to wait for each layer to dry. I paint everything at high detail and then when you want some parts foggy you brush over them with an opaque layer (after everything is dry ), this is the hardest part for me because it is so hard to cover up that detail you just spent so much time on but it is neccessary otherwise details struggle within your work and it becomes to busy. So there is a little glimpse of how I work, if you have any more questions feel free to let me know .

this is beautiful-- you were able to get some fluid crispness in the oils
this is what i have been thinking about-- acrylics- even with a gloss medium- seem almost flat to me lately...
i want shiny paintings.... the thing that always bothered me about oils was how long they took to dry
what do you think about that? maybe patience in my old age would change this
i have a 2 year old and well, him touching them and space to let them dry is an issue
i have some oils that were my grandpa's and you have inspired me to get a piece of wood and start up with them to experience their fluidity and power
this piece is making me think of the tartness of the lemon and their shiny skin
with the oils inside
thanks for posting t-his *
i believe seeing the real painting would be wonderful especially with the frame you talk about
be well
love

darklyartistic In reply to schugarlips [2007-10-23 01:06:00 +0000 UTC]

oh oh oh!!!!!! thankyou! Acrylics can be shiny to and you dont not need a gloss medium. After you are done with an acylic painting, buy some gloss polyacrylic by minwax at homedepot or lowes and do two coats and you will have a beautiful finish.
I absolutely hate drying time with oils the reason why I used to use acrylics so much. But I discovered this oil paint made by winsor and newton called alkyd oils and they dry within 24 hours so I can paint one night and it is dry the next, they are the most amazing things and are not expensive at all!
Thankyou so so much lisa for your support, now pick up that brush and get to work.
