There's a reason behind it. Zim was released mere months before 9/11, and even then, it was pure nightmare fuel. The parents got concerned (pussies), and even Jhonen Vasquez, the show's creator, still hates his time at Nickelodeon.

He hated working for Nick, but still liked the show. He understood from the beginning that his intentions with the show weren't aimed for children, and I guess Nick realized a bit too late.

Indeed. Its nightmare fuel made into a masterpiece, regardless of how scary some may say it is, and I can definitely tell why many teenagers could easily relate to it, for its nitty-grittiness somehow reminded them of that in the curricular material they are often mandated to learn from in their high school classes!

Spongebob didn't replace Invader Zim.The REAL reason why it canceled because it was scaring kids,low rating,and Nickelodeon didnt like the show...Spongebob came way before...Spongebob out in 1999.IZ came out in 2001.Not trying to be mean but you can't blame Spongebob just because Invader Zim was cancelled

To be honest, I think one of the reasons why Invader Zim was cancelled was because it was so dark. It was dreary, gross and inappropriate for children.

The true reason is because of low ratings. That might be due to the Sponge because he filled (and still fills) up screen time, so the other shows can't air. Also it got pushed to Nicktoons, a channel that most people don't have.
