Description Okay...~aurora-firestorm referred me to Greg Martin's tutorials.

This piece was done with both his Starfield and Planet tutorials. Both were very easy to understand, and if you repeat the process a couple of times in making something, you start to get it down fairly easily. Suffice to say, my methods of doing planets AND stars have gotten a big boost. I will probably work more towards hand-touching the planets and nebula in future pieces to add onto the effects the tutorials had me making down the road. It's obvious the tutorials could be carried out with anyone using a mouse, but I have this urge to use the tablet with just about any PS process...

A hint however: If you find yourself adding double layers of the texture-boosting emboss effect, you had too bland of a surface for the emboss effect to grab hold of. My moon in this picture is evidence of that. If you squint at it, you'll notice it really does look like a dull Ping Pong ball with some subtle texture. Too subtle I'd say, but it worked OK for a smaller moon.

This is just a starting point, but I do intend to grow from there. More spacescapes forthcoming. And yes, I expect the next few to be improvements over this one. I need a break from fractals.

About...maybe 2 and a half hours, tops on PS 7.0. Most of the time was chewed up by making the starfield and trying to do the tutorials to the letter.

PS. If anybody notices a funky rectangle going from one of the big stars down to the moon, that was a goof with the lens flare that a friend just pointed out to me on MSN. Don't think it'll be easily edited without some serious jiggery-pokery, so I'm just going to refine my flare-modifying methods for the next piece. Just so you know.

Hey, Chrome! Any chance of some co-op project, like You draw something awesome like this as scene background/environment, and i render in some HW ships...

Cool. Glad you liked this enough to want to do this.

Might have one you may be able to use already: [link]

Considering you're such a Taii fan, you'll recognize it instantly. BBQed Kharak. (I started with a PS plugin that did the planet, nice pinkish planet, then adjusted the atmosphere to scorched and painted in all the firestorms. It didn't have a "scorched planet" option so...heh...I decided to improvise.)

I can probably redo this one, and on a much bigger scale if you'd like. I've gotten better "manual" planetmaking and starmaking abilities since.

Besides this, anything specific you'd like to see? Any specific colors?

Thanks. Yeah I'm a sucker for purples, pinks, and blues.

Just the minor flaws bug me on this one, so I'll probably do Spacescape III or IV with these colors.

Ah! Yes! Beautiful! I haven't yet tried his planet tutorials, but I should do that sometime. I love the colors you chose for the larger stars; it throws neat blue-and-purple light all over everything.

That was the idea.

I noticed on his site that the tutorial just covers your basic rocky planet. However, I think I've some ideas on how to put oceans onto them...

DeepChrome In reply to Suirebit [2005-10-18 01:39:25 +0000 UTC]

Maybe you did. I used to do more spacescapes.

Original resolution was 1800 across I think, but everything looks better sized down a bit, so my next one will be bigger.

The challenge will be getting the starfield to work over such a large area. (I've found some things just work better in smaller areas and then scaled up or something. It's annoying.)

I intend to make more. I used to do them quite often with plugins and stuff, but now I want to do it more by hand and brush.

I'm hearing about those from friends who critique. so yes, I'm aware my techniques need....refining.

Thanks.

Yeah, black overlay can get you in trouble some times.. espeically, if you keep your monitor darker than the norm.. Quickest fix would be fill that layer completely with black, so you don't get any outlines.. (I think thats what is causing it, at least) if you want anymore critique, just ask.. I always over anaylize things..
