Description
So I spent all day today working on this. The drawing itself did not take long but the stopping, scanning, cropping, typing.. on and on and on took forever. This is for my friendSo hopefully this will help some of you. I tried to be as thorough and detailed as I can. I'm not used to blending with sketch paper so it was rather painful.

Thank you, Alyssa! I wanted to be thorough, but not all ranty-preachy, you know? I try to say enough just so it looks like I know what I'm talking about haha and keep it as informative as possible. Don't be scared to draw them.. they won't bite!

There was a good amount of information. Some people only put pictures as a tutorial and I just end up staring at it and then getting bored with it haha

Haha.. I loveeee teeth! I think the most attractive part of a person's face is their smile therefore it goes without saying that I love lips and teeth. I do hope this will be useful to you when you do have to draw any teeth in the future!

Thank you, Subh! I am always more than willing to share my tips, techniques and mistakes too haha... I don't think there's any secrets or magic behind art so I find it irritating that some artists keep their tips and techniques to themselves.

YOU ARE COMPLETELY AWESOME, MEKS!!! Wow, ask and ye shall receive, eh? THANK YOU! Your tutorial was very helpful, and just proves how meticulous and talented you are---the finished product looks very realistic, as usual! I also see now that I need to make a trip to the art store---I don't have a kneaded eraser, tortillon, or frisket film. Thanks so much for spending all day doing this for me---teeth have always given me a lot of trouble. Now I can pull up this tutorial and follow your directions, and hopefully the next set of choppers I attempt to draw will look more realistic. THANK YOU, THANK YOU!

And thank you! if you have anything else you'd like to request don't hesitate to do so. Sometimes I don't feel like committing to a project for a brief period of time and rather work on little side projects.

You are most welcome, my friend! I was a little bored yesterday and I didn't feel like starting any new projects and I thought, "Oh, I can just draw some teeth for Donna!" I didn't realize it was a day's worth of work onlyyyy because I kept editing and changing stuff around. I know better next time and it shouldn't take me as long at all haha. I even got confused at one point because I scanned 3 in a row without typing anything and I was like, what was the point I wanted to make at this scan???? And what the heck is this? So I had to scan and then type the description right afterwards. I hope it will pose as some use to you in the near future!

Amazing stuff Meks! The only thing I'm probably not 'getting' is the frisket film usage
Do you just cut the size you want and lift the charcoal that way? Or fold it to get an edge?
I'm just trying to work the usages

desdainart In reply to Kalgoras [2011-06-13 08:53:46 +0000 UTC]
Yes, the frisket film you just place the adhesive part touching the surface of your paper-- don't push it down just gently place it on top and take your pencil and just draw on top of the frisket film of what you want to lift off. You can test it by scribbling a good amount of pencil on your paper and take the frisket film and draw like a happy face and lift of the frisket film and see a white happy face and on the top you will see the lead you lifted off. I buy mine in sheets of 9" x 12" and I just cut them down to size. I have a picture that I will be posting in a second here.

Sounds genius! I might have to keep an eye out

Yes, the adhesive is supposed to lift off the lead. If you have magic tape lying around you can use that as well.

I was gonna say the same thing about the Scotch Magic Tape. Just make sure that it's "Magic Tape," or that you test it on a scrap piece of paper (same type as you are drawing on) first. Otherwise, bad things can result. Bad, bad things.
Not that I would know from experience. I mean, seriously. I'm practically a professional. No way I'd ever tear a strip off the face of a drawing I had like 70 hours worth of work in because I was using the bargain-brand scotch tape. That's just crazy talk.

Holy crap!!! I probably would have just jumped off a 2 story building!!! Enough to feel the pain and suffer but not enough to die I guess haha... What were you thinking scotch tape??!! Well, I guess you weren't thinking then haha..

I was thinking, "It's clear tape..." At least it wasn't something really stupid, like masking tape.
Oh, by the way, another useful tape tip: you can use that brown packing tape on Arches paper as a mask for straight edges and stuff. Just make sure you test the tape on a scrap piece first, so you're sure you didn't get a roll with steroidal glue.
(You could probably use it on other papers, too, but I only use Arches paper, so that's all I can vouch for.)

Oh, man. I would have been sobbing real tears. Sometimes I use painter's masking tape, you know, the blue colored masking tape but I normally have a stock of artist tape which looks just like masking tape except it's like 3 times more expensive and it's more friendly to my paper. I only use those to tape printer paper to the back of my paper. I hate it when I'm drawing and I get lead residue under my paper and smudge the crap out of the back side and it's all dirty. So I started taping paper to the back and when I'm done with the drawing I just peel them off and clean, white paper on the back side is revealed.

I use the drafting tape to tape off the borders on my paintings. It's expensive, and I still get bleed from washes that runs underneath it, but I haven't really found anything better, yet. I might start using masking fluid on the edges of the tape, but I'm afraid that leaving the masking fluid on the paper that long would damage it.
I probably need to pay more attention to the back side of my paper, although I will admit that after every project I clean the ever-loving crap out of my work station. I scrub the hell out of it, re-organize the tools and media, re-cover my side table, clean up my drawing table and my easel, scrub all of my palettes, wash all of my brushes... it sometimes takes 2-3 days to clean up after a painting, but I find that it helps me get some distance from the piece I just finished, before I start on the next one.

Yeah, I believe artist tape and drafting tape are the same thing. They are expensive as hell. My friend paints too and she said sometimes it bleeds to the edges of her paper. So she puts down a layer of drafting tape and has it wrapping around to the back side of her paper. Then on top of that she puts on a layer or 2 of duct tape making sure it wraps around to the back and she has not had a problem since. I would definitely not leave masking fluid on any paper for long though-- it's not worth the risk.
