Thank you for taking the time for a critique. Two critiques now and such different results. Both mention the lighting and I'll have to agree with that. Earlier in the morning would have been nicer light but then I'm wondering about the effect of the long shadows. Someday I'll return to The Wave and try for better lighting but until then I've got this shot and a big smile on my face when I remember the sight. I've yet to see the photo that captures that feeling of standing there in the bowl.

This appears to be shot in the middle of the day, thus you are getting some very harsh shadows. Also, though you can't help it, the sky is very bland. Probably should have gotten closer and included less flat blue boring sky. The subject is mostly centered too, which is normally a "no no" in photography. I personally would have gotten closer, used a wider lens, and included less sky. Also, it's ALWAYS better to shoot early in the morning, or late in the afternoon, unless you're shooting in shade. Not sure why this got a DD, but congrats on it anyways.

Critiques don't exactly grow on trees here on DA so I do have to thank you for that much. I will remember to put my camera away from now on from one haour after sunrise until one hour before sunset. Really no point I guess.

i'm just saying, it looks like a snapshot to me. nothing overly special about it. i've seen hundreds of shots of the wave and i was trying to help you take better shots. if you look at my portfolio, u can at least realize that i know what i'm talking about when it comes to landscape photography.

i agree with you about this shot, by why so douchey about it? There's certainly room for improvement here and on many shots, but my suggestions to you would be to make it more about improving the image and less about showing what you know. I like that you're looking to help out, and critiques are a great thing, but maybe tone it down a bit. Just a suggestion.

yeah, it's just frustrating when there's really good work out there that gets passed over, but then things like this get a DD. i inappropriately vented my frustrations here. sorry about that.

No need to apologize to me, reading your critique and your explanation together makes you sound condescending. Landscape photography is about enjoying the outdoors and having fun with a camera, its personal to the one behind the lens. It seems like you were trying to prove what you know more than being helpful, which may not have been the case but that's the way it came across. Like David said, its water under the bridge, I'm glad someone who's been taking photos for years got a chance to show an image of their to a greater audience!

i'm really not trying to be a jerk. i guess i'm just bitter about certain things. i guess it's really more towards the person that nominated and chose it than the photographer himself, but i guess art is subjective, so i should be less critical, even if i dont find it particularly interesting.

Whether your critique is accurate or not, the last sentence makes it unlikely that the deviant will consider it "fair", IMO.

geez thats one harsh critique not that I think a critique shouldn't include criticism (constructive of course!) but the comment about Not sure why this got a dd is opinion not constructive at all!! over 1000 people faved it, obviously appealing to the eye! I like the sky great use of contrasting colours and nice texture.

most welcome , =StevenDavisPhoto is a very talented photographer he knows what hes talking about especially when it comes to landscapes but he doesn't know how to write a balanced critque. Its no good only stating the negative in someones work there is always something positive to draw from in anyones work!! Shooting in the golden hours is great advice the colour tempreture is ideal at those times and you will get richer colours, also a wide angle lens would indeed create a more interesting image, waiting for interesting cloud formations also adds to your image. All great advice its just the way he wrote it IMO was not good. Keep up the great work look forward to watching what you do next

I appreciate the comment and your well written attempt to explain that writing skills and photography skills do not necessarily go hand in hand. Anyway it's all water under the bridge now.

But the sun was still way up there and not a cloud in the sky. Next time I'll head in before sunrise and spend the day in the area.

Not a serious question, but did you shoot the picture for Scale the Summit's Carving Desert Canyon's album cover!?

I wish! Looks like they has a wider angle lens and a little more manipulation but generally in the same direction. This bowl like area is pretty small so most shots have a similar look that jugs the viewers memory like that.
