It is just upriver perhaps a dozen miles where it stops being wide and deep enough for yachts. Just the other side of DC, it narrows and the many rapids and rocky falls keep it a playground for kayakers and fish. That is the reason George Washington and some friends founded the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. Before the age of the railroad, it was the only way to ship large quantities of goods.
From here to the Atlantic Ocean, it is a navigable waterway.
