So glad to have her done! The tail was really easy, (Sketched out once, tested, and a success!) but the bangs proved to be an issue. Not so much because they're a complicated shape, but because I was having serious trouble deciding whether flat or 3d bangs would be best for her. In the end, I decided that these bangs looked good from 2 angles and didn't look bad from the front, as opposed to flat bangs which looked good from one angle, okay from the front, and kind of odd from the alternate side. More photos will be posted on my tumblr: [link]

She is closest in color to the top left photo.

Derpy is not for sale!

How do you design th ebangs? Whats the proccess?

I finish the bodies entirely before beginning on mane/tail design. This way I can get the height and proportions just right for the ponies. Then I turn the plushie on its side, and place a sheet of paper behind its head. I draw out the shape that I want the final bangs to be on the paper, around the pony's head. Then I cut it out, pin it to the head, and see where I need to add/take away paper to make it look like that if the top of the paper hit exactly the middle of the head. Normally this takes quite a bit of taping together. Once I get that to where I want it, I trace that twice, cut both of those out, and tape them together along what would be the top seams. I take another piece of paper, just wide enough to slide between the ears, and pin that down. Then I pin the paper bangs design to that. I tape the bottom of the paper bangs to the paper sheet and cut into the sheet where the other part connects. Then you just "polish" the shape until it's as close to perfect as you can make it, add seam allowance, and test in minky. The test will normally have something wrong with it, and you can figure out what that is, change it and test again. It's really mostly trial and error, but those are the basic steps!

Thanks so much! I am no where near as creative as that, so I guess I'll just keep using the main patterns I have XD

No problem! And you don't need to be very creative to do it, I promise. It's all in doing things over and over and over again.

I'm trying to make some pony plushies at least after Christmas, I'm a beginner, so it will look nothing like this, but if you have any extra information on how to do plushies, I'd like it

Β

I'm doing Pinkie, cuz her mane looks easy. Lol... I'm going to bring the mane in to show at school

Well if you have any more specific questions I'll do my best to answer them, but plushies is a pretty broad subject.

Hi!

Love your plushies! So cute!Β

I'm going to make my first pony plush Derpy this fall and I'd like some help. A few questions:

1: About how long does it take to finish a pony plush?

2: In your opinion, what is the hardest part of making a pony?

3: How do you make the manes and tails for most ponies? (I see for her you made your own template) Do you find templates online or make your own?

Please respond!

Hello!
Firstly I bid you luck in your plushing adventure!
Some answers:
1: I usually tell people about 20 hours, but that's assuming that everything goes smoothly and I have all the fabric on hand and I have already completed patterns for every part of the plush. Since that is NEVER the case, it's normally more like 30-35 hours, spaced out over a long period of time. I never have time to just sit down and work for a couple of days straight, so it always takes me forever to finish plushies. Sometimes as little
2: I definitely think patterning is difficult, but sewing curves together, like in Rainbow Dash's tail is the hardest part for me. It's frustrating to get through one stripe only to realize you have 11 more seams to go and even then it might not turn out right. I guess it's not more difficult than patterning, but it's more difficult to get motivated to do that part, for me at least.
3: I make all of my own patterns. :icondolphinfeather: does sell some patterns for a body pattern and all of the mane 6's hairstyles though. I would tell you how to make your own, but honestly it's all trial and error. Look at the shapes, draw something similar, test it, change it as needed, try again. Over and over until you get it right.

I love her! I have a question about the wings. I don't own a sewing machine so I do mine but hand. The last plush I hade was a fluttershy and I made her wings like this but the inside part was hard for me. I think if I use a thicker thread it might work but i'm not sure. What do u think?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

eebharas In reply to ravenandkuba [2013-05-24 18:39:34 +0000 UTC]

I would suggest getting an embroidery hoop for these kinds of details, and using a tear away stabilizer. Use a thick embroidery floss on the detail and then cut the wing pattern piece around the detail. It makes it show up so much better to do the detail before making the wing. if you still want to have the indention made by sewing through stuffing or batting, you can use a basic stitch and sew the layers together next to your detail stitch once the wing is put together. (I do just about all of my sewing by machine, so it's a lot easier, but it's still basically the same routine.)

If you mean embroidery machine, they're as little as $250 usd. If you mean regular sewing machine, I've seen new ones for as low as $60 usd.

eebharas In reply to ravenandkuba [2013-05-25 18:16:22 +0000 UTC]

Haha no problem. My first machine was a pretty inexpensive one, (Less than a hundred dollars, but I don't know exactly how much since it was a present.) and I still use it now. I haven't had to repair it once. I can't say the same for my embroidery machine, but it has done a lot more stitching, and you have to take computerized machines in for every little thing. If you're just looking for a basic machine, I'd try the walmart website and just searching "brother sewing machines" and making it sort lowest to highest price. I just checked and there's still one up for $58, and it's got a straight stitch and a zig zag stitch, and you can change the width of both.

Absolutely no. Changing The last Roundup was wrong on a number of levels.

However, I do prefer a largely serious interpretation of her condition, including the conclusion that it is episodic, as we saw her focused on the muffins in Applebuck Season.
