Description

It had been only a month that the tall, golden Lompat had arrived at Dapple Wood Stables. During his settling in, he became very close with one of the newer riders, Jesse Coldan. Jesse took a huge step with the stallion, training him in simple ground rules such as manners on the cross ties, and learning to mind his rider, no matter the age or size, especially considering she was a bit stocky and short, with big, muscular legs.

Jesse was a fearless rider, with an aggressive courage that sometimes ended her up in the ER, but she had a kind soul and a soft touch that Nicias grew fond of, and soon, Jesse was hardly riding her other mounts, spending all her time hiding out in his stall, reading, grooming, and sometimes just whispering between the two of them.

She played with the huge stallion, topping 17hh he was a gentle giant, but powerful nonetheless, and would sometimes need to remind Jesse of this with a swift nip in the shoulder, or a casual pinning of his ears in warning, but he could do no wrong in her eyes, and very shortly, the ground games they played were benefitting them in the ring.

Jesse became used to his choppy, uncomfortable gaits, usually riding with a martingale to keep his head down and relaxed, rather than popping up and taking hold of the reins. She practiced riding without stirrups, in order to strengthen her leg muscles so she could ride almost an entire hour out of the saddle in her two-point position, which was surpisingly easier to cope with than the boisterous rocking with could sometimes pop her so far out of the saddle that she feared going right over his head.

Soon, the couple were jumping 6 feet too easily, considering his breed's reputation, and he had to be fitted with weights in order to downplay his urgency to jump everything in sight.

"Hey, Jesse-! Jesse..? Hello?" Kyle Weston, DWS' trainer and breeder poked his head into the warm barn. "You in here?" he called, and got a nicker of responses, mostly from horses eager for their nightly meal.

"Uhh, yeah," the short blonde replied, emerging from the darker end of the aisle, a large shadow following closely behind her.

"Ah, taking Nicias out for a hack?" Kyle asked with a soft smirk, noting the tenderness in which Jesse stroked the golden horse's forehead.

"Something like that," she gave him a mischievious look before leading the slim Lompat out into a nearby jumping ring. She slipped off the dark bridle and cooler, setting them onto the fence, before clucking and stepping toward the patient stallion. He nickered, and Kyle looked over his shoulder uneasily before climbing the fence to watch the two. The other riders had emerged from the main farm house, where they'd been warming themselves and snacking.

"Jesse! What're you two doing?" Seth called in a cooing voice before leaping onto the fence next to Kyle, who gave him a disgruntled look.

"Riding," she stated simply, walking towards the mounting block, with Nicias following loyally behind her with no reins or saddle.

She pushed the block to his side and leapt onto his back gracefully, urging him into a trot right away.

The third time around, she gently touched his sides and he responded immediately, swinging into a gentle lope, which she found was easier to sit to without tack.

Twenty minutes later, there was a seemingly larger crowd around the ring as word swept the stables, and she took a deep breath, positioning Nicias in front of a 6 foot oxer. Closing her eyes briefly, she urged him into a canter and loped towards it. Nicias perked his ears and swiveled them towards the gasps at the edge of the ring, before gathering himself and leaping a stride before he even needed to. Jesse exhaled as he leapt and spread her arms wide, feeling the cool winter air between her fingers, and the warm muscles rippling beneath her legs.

I worked very long and hard on this and I really adore the way this came out, so I would love some comments if you have the time! Also, sorry for the long story. I feel this was pent up for far too long
