Description
Ever since Lydia mutated I was wondering how her walk should look like. And I got two ideas. First one is her 'normal' walk or how she walk when nobody is watching. Second one is 'people walk' or walk when there are people around. It is designed to mimic human walk and put at ease non mutated survivors. Used with long skirt to cover tentacles.GIF version - sta.sh/0gr5s8tve69

Really great work here. I've been facing similar conceptual questions for some of my characters and it's nice to see some of the differences here are the same as my ideas. Ho real hip movement for the tentacle walk, little arm movement... makes it seem creepy but kinda elegant as she glides along anyway.Β Really fantastic work!

It's always interesting to think how the hell unusual characters do the mundane things. How tentacle legs affects Lydia's movement, how a character with really long torso jump, or how flying nagaΒ crawl when hiding. Sometimes the solutions are as interesting as the characters themselves

I think I always end up with a walk cycle in my scraps before I do a real animation with them. I think the walk cycle is half the reason I want to animate them in the first place.

How did you get the normal walking cycle from?Β

I'm not quite sure what do you mean, but I've answered how it was made here -> comments.deviantart.com/1/7132β¦

Incredible! Thats so cool!
Β I imagine all those pant legs and seams must chaffe something fierce though

People... and more specifically non-mutated humans, still alive? Did you run out of ammunition, or just places to stash all the loot from their corpses? What is this madness.
Embrace the tentacle wigglewalk! *wiggle wiggle slither*
Awesome animation, with great use of overlapping motion, and secondary animation on the hands. It looks like you used some sort of vector lines, because of the consistent line width... but I have no idea what tool would let you do that. Please share, I wish to know more. :}

First of all I do not use line or pencil tools to make lines. I use brush tool and fix too thick or too thin lines by hand. It's not an effective way but I'm used to this and I like the results. I only use pencil to make guidelines when I'm drawing shadows and lights.

orig00.deviantart.net/6144/f/2β¦Β - progress on 'People walk'. Sorry for quality. Flash CS4 make terrible gifs.
Β
When I've finished last sketch on 'people walk' I started making 'normal walk' from creating movieclip of a single tentacle movement. It was part of the tentacle from Lydia body and up to contact with surface. Then I copy-pasted it and played with starting frames and shape. After that I got sketch of Lydia walking on 6 short stumps. After that I made other halfs of the tentacles by hand.
Β
orig00.deviantart.net/fde1/f/2β¦ - At this point I had this.
Β
Then I remembered that front couples of tentacles are partially fused so I converted movieclips to lines and made a sketch of fused tentacles. Final sketch. Clean lines + flat colors. Shadows and it is finished.
So basicaly I simplified making of the 'normal walk' by using moviclip system from Flash. Graphic type to be clear.
Sorry for any errors in text. My English is poor.

No. She's not that kind of a mutant. She is naive enough to think mutants and non-mutants can coexist. She only kills in self defence.

So how did she get those tentacle-pants? Just disassembled a bunch of regular clothes and practiced sewing until she could make them fit right?

Yep. She still needs to mend it from time to time becauseΒ the cloth frays after several days ofΒ slithering around.

This game sounds like so much fun for creating stories, and I want so badly to get into it, but the difficulty curve is basically perpendicular.

woah that has to be one of the best conceptual walking cycles I have ever seen! amazingly done and it's actually pretty hypnotising! o-o just wow, that's all I gotta say.

It's an interesting and meditative process. But it's time-consuming. I've made 4 different sketches before I've finally figured out HOW this tentacles should moveΒ Β Β

yea and especially the first motion looks very complex! <3

Epsilon-Shadow In reply to Pantiesaurus [2017-11-05 12:01:34 +0000 UTC]
Funny thing. First one was the easiest one to sketch (tentacles barely interact with each other) and hardest to actually animate (too many lines). 'People walk' was much harder to sketch since it had to mimic human legs. But it was easiest one to animate since it basically is two solid moving elements and not six.
