Description As I sit there in class,
I hear insults.

"That's so gay."
"Shut up, faggot."

I keep my mouth shut.
I don't want to be "that girl."

The arguing escalates,
The teacher ignores it.

I clench my fist,
I clench my teeth.

Don't say anything,
I tell myself.

I am angry,
Not at those people.

I am angry,
At myself.

I do not stand up for myself,
I ignore it because I am scared.

I do not stand up for myself,
I am too worried about my image.

I do not stand up for myself,
But those who are rude, do.

They stand up for themselves,
They are the ones speaking.

I am the one in silence,
Not them.

Blah I'm guilty of the deaf thing on occasion, I don't mean it as a bad thing but I know what you are saying.

Sorry. >_<

This happens to me pretty much every day in Spanish class. People just toss those words around and I always promise myself I'll stand up next time and give them a piece of my mind, but 'next time' always comes and goes without a word and I get so frustrated. It's terrible.

It's real intimidating, especially if you are, and haven't come out yet. (Or, don't plan to.) It's bad if they make fun of you for being LGBT, but it's worse when they do it before you've even come out.

Oh, I know. I've been there. In high school I only came out to my friends and family. But now that I'm in college and a full-grown adult I'm out to the world, and I haven't gotten any crap about it for years.

Said very strong, but as someone who's been through the shit called highschool and later on in real life...unless you start speaking up and standing your ground, the day you so desire to come in this poem - it won't happen.

Of course being too reckless and witty (like me) can get you in a lot of problems. I managed to make a little group of 20 people trully hate me in college because I told each of them their fears and flaws because one of them dared insult me.

Life's too beautiful and versatile to pay attention to the silly f*cks who'll be too traditional and boring till the day they die but some problem or lil drama spices things up lols

College is an easier place to start, where people are more accepting and understand that there are "different" people. My high school is extremely intolerant..

Morfinium In reply to Equality-Forever [2011-02-13 18:17:57 +0000 UTC]

I sooooooo ditched on highschool once upon a time but when I there, I was "her" a.k.a. the different girl, the girl who dressed weird, who had weird philosophycal views and who blew people's minds with her behavior. I had fun annoying the shit out of them though hahhah

And in college...actually it's the same as school but people think that they have to act "adult" and "tolerant" just because someone might badmouth them. Tolerance....that doesn't even exist, it's an artificially created virtue that everyone tries to show off having.

I have my friends which are as bad as me, we shear a co-dependance lols, and they have like absolutely the same experiance from highschool as me.

All I can say is that if you gather a bunch of children and try to make them follow boring rules (my definition of highschool) and then they are presented with someone who plays by their own rules...chaos brakes loose.

Here I don't involve only boys who like boys or girls who like girls, I involve all subcultures and each and every person who isn't mainstream or a WASP.

I am extremely shy and when I hear some older guys in my art class start using gay as an insult I just want to scream. But I cant say anything, because I barley talk in school (mainly to my friends or when ive been asked a direct question). And i feel terrible. Im straight, and I dont really have any gay friends...but this really bothers me and im so very sorry that this happens to you. I hate it when people judge people.

Your work is really heart felt. If you want to stop being silent, you have to make the decision to stand up for yourself.

The perfect time is now, because the problems will still persist in the future. I remember last year during my senior year I would get harassed for dressing weird and expressing myself creatively. Every day some ignorant kid would yell from the hall, "Satanist!" even though he didn't know me or had the competence to not care how I looked. Finally, I couldn't take it anymore and the next time he did it, I stood up for myself, which almost came to an exchange of blows, but from then on, the kid and his friends didn't say anything else to me.

Don't be afraid. In the end you'll feel so much better than just taking it. Always remember you have friends who will support you to the end.

Fortunately I don't have any people harassing me, but it just bothers me that other people are ignorant and use certain words as an insult, etc.

Thank you for the advice.

It can be hard. I know it. I've had to keep my mouth shut and keep my personal opinions, experiences and knowledge to myself before. I used to be terrified of saying anything about anything to anyone...

Sometimes you just have to stop. Say things without thinking and get into a debate or two. Let yourself be heard. Otherwise you'll be suffering in silence forever...

Good luck.

In my school, I AM 'that girl'. Because when people used to mess with me, I would stand up for myself. Now no one messes with me, no one insults me, no one spreads rumors about me. I'm just "weird" or "different", and I'm happier than they are with their conformism. I like it this way.

I'll go ahead and share my little story.

So I'm sitting there in the dentist's office. Laying back in the chair, waiting.

And this mother comes in with her little boy. The lady is offering him different flavors for floss or toothpaste or something. The mother chooses for him... just plain mint. The lady says "Well there can be experimenting later.". The mother says "There will be no experimenting later." They're both kinda laughing, and my grip tightens on the armrest. I want to sit up, glare, and state clearly and as calmly as I can, "Not your decision." But I don't. Because my dad or grandmother is picking me up and what if somebody says something and what if I'm a homeless teenager in Alaska. If it weren't so cold all the time I'd stand up for me, and for him, so ignorant of his mother's possibly conditional love.

Two words. Financial. Stability.

And then comes freedom.

Thank you for sharing. Sometimes it's knowing when to keep quiet, but sometimes I feel as if I must always be quiet.

I need to find a voice.

It can be hard to be patient, but I recently reached some weird kind of clarity in my life. As much as I want my gay rights right now, and as much as I want to speak up to every homophobe out there, I realized I just need to wait. With what I want in life, and with what I need to do right now and in my immediate future, I have to be careful which lines I cross and where and when.

As cheesy as this sounds, our time will come. Revolution rarely happens overnight, and a good way to satisfy your urges to stand up is with baby steps. Maybe just try talking to people on here. Posting more things like this.

I feel like that too...I always hate when someone says "That's so gay" and I tell them not to say that, they all of a sudden assume I'm a lesbian. (When really I'm bi). Which is why I rarely tell them to stop now. But they don't need to know that. Honestly one day I think they're going to look back and regret saying those things, not realizing it hurt the ones who never spoke up.
