Ah! Very well done guide! This will be useful to us all I don't know why I missed seeing this earlier actually.

Er, I'll point out though, that I'd concluded that both squirrels and otters were digitigrade My word on that is by no means law though, as they and the rodents all seem to switch between the two. If we're drawing them plantigrade, thats fine by me, but I gotta know, for skipper's currently tiptoed XD

I think Skipper would make more sense to be plantigrade, as that's how it's listed here: [link] and that is what looks more feasible. Squirrels are also plantigrade. Where did you list them as digitigrade - on the note you sent us? In that case we'd have to make a correction.

Ya, that's what I'd said on the note. I didn't find anywhere saying outright if they were plantigrade or digitigrade, so I made a somewhat educated guess based on loads of pics So this is good that you found this! I'll change Skipper's design for that, and modify the list.

D'oh!!! I was just browsing around and I found this-- Very helpful by the way.
But the d'oh was for... I just realized something... otter fan that I am, and anthro artist, it has totally slipped my mind all this time that otters are plantigrade animals... maybe that's what always bugged me about the way I draw them... I always drew them like I saw them-- and those were all inaccurate. I'm really glad you guys are making an effort to pull away from Nelvana, I personally didn't care for their animation style at all. I like the more realistic stuff like what you're doing.

I have to fix my otter problem before it sticks too bad... Thanks for the brain-jolt!

Thank you I found the Nelvana style so off-putting that I could never even watch a full episode. As for the plantigrade/digitigrage thing, ~Riowolf pointed it out and it's true a lot of people miss it. From what I've seen, a lot of mistakes anthro artists make is that they stylize their drawings according to what other art they've seen and not how the animal they're drawing really 'is'. That's why sketching from real life really helps more than words can say.

Same here, although I did watch all the episodes just to humor myself. I really didn't like it, though... especially the weird ponytails on female characters... ick! You know it's bad when you have to add big fake eyelashes and ponytails just to tell the gender of a character.

And I'm glad that you also carried along that point, because that's exactly what I've done, I've looked at other anthro artists, not even officially of otters, and assumed that since bears and badgers were the only creatures I could think of who were plantigrade, I didn't need to worry. Even though otters were mustelids, too. Otters in real life have kinda hard legs to draw turning into an anthro, so I just stylized my own version... incorrectly. I think... that ~Kobb is the only one I've ever seen draw plantigrade anthro otters.

Thanks for that!

Definitely pathetic. Some day I want to design a male character with big eyelashes just to mess with people.

Also, I think it's cool that you're learning Gaeilge, are you of Irish ancestry?

Kyranth-Wolfen In reply to Eshva [2010-07-21 15:32:33 +0000 UTC]

Haha, that would be great.

Thanks! And not particularly, I mean, I'm 3/4 Irish by heritage, but I know nobody personally from my family who was from Ireland themselves. However, I've taken a big interest in their culture, and especially their language, so I'm trying to teach it to myself. Right now I only know very basic stuff, and it's a hard language to try to learn on your own, especially when you're just 14 and can't go looking for a class or anything... but, I'm trying.
Why do you ask?

Eshva In reply to Kyranth-Wolfen [2010-07-21 18:26:24 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I'm not trying to be your stalker, I was simply curious. It's neat when someone takes it upon themselves to learn, especially something as difficult as a language. I know it's always hard, I started and stopped on Japanese, German, and Hebrew so many times I gave up. Still, knowledge is power X)

Kyranth-Wolfen In reply to Eshva [2010-07-22 16:05:18 +0000 UTC]

No, that's okay. If it's in my signature, you're welcome to bring it up. That's why I put it there, in case I found someone who could give me some tips or help.

And yeah, I've been really trying to learn, but it's a difficult language. There's not even a 'yes' or 'no' word, how you agree/disagree depends on what they ask. There's also drastic dialect changes... And there's not many free resources, but I'm using the ones I can get. It's a beautiful language, I hope I can become fluent and visit Ireland eventually. I'm sad more people don't speak it.

And yep, even if I fail, I still have what I picked up from learning it.

If you're that interested in it, it's worth it to pick up something from a book seller. I've had good experiences with the "Teach Yourself" series, they're (usually) paperback and inexpensive, as well as helpful. Trust me, I've tried learning through free online resources, I couldn't get very far at all. Anyway, good luck on your quest X)

Actually, the one book I do have and splurged on because I saw it in a local used book store is "Teach Yourself Irish Conversation" It's a pretty good resource, although I think they tend to throw a lot at you at once, so you have to repeat it over and over to learn it. I think it's okay, though. Thanks for the good luck, glad to get some advice! Glad you like the Teach Yourself brand, makes me feel better about spending money on it. It hasn't disappointed yet!

Neat coincidence. I agree, it's almost overwhelming, but it works.

AragornofRedwall [2010-07-10 07:06:58 +0000 UTC]

So the characters are going to look nothing like they did in Season 3?

Nope. There may be slight influences but we'll be doing our own thing.

*takes deep breath* Okay... this is so much fun and so much work...

...oh, but did you read my latest journal? I'm going to be gone most of all of this week, so... yeah, just to let you know.

But thanks for this! Its so overwhelming and yet its so... elating, y'know? Besides, if we just simply go ahead and do it, then it won't be so bad.

God bless!

Eshva In reply to Kelaiah [2010-07-04 01:16:22 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, but nothing's actually changed, really: just smooth rough edges and add bubbles to your concept sheet, pretty much. Oversimplified I know, but I guess it seems like a lot cause you've been hit all at once. Once things get rolling it will be easier.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kelaiah In reply to Eshva [2010-07-04 01:39:21 +0000 UTC]

Oh yeah, and something I want to ask about:

By "smooth out" do you mean that fur tufts aren't allowed/desired? Like on my latest concept art of Bane, you can see fur tufts on the sides of his face or his shoulders/elbows/knees, etc.

Is that a (for lack of a better term) 'no no' now? (I'm not trying to sound sarcastic, btw)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Eshva In reply to Kelaiah [2010-07-04 16:16:37 +0000 UTC]

Just be sparse with them. In places where the tufts would be necessary or really obvious on the actual animal, like the face, you can use them (but again, be frugal). In other places, like the elbows - if you can work without them, try not to.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kelaiah In reply to Eshva [2010-07-10 05:36:43 +0000 UTC]

Okay, I'll try to be frugal, though it'll be a hard habit to break not to have the elbows be tuft-y. Oh well, I'll try.

Okay, thanks! Although I'm not sure if I'll be able to attend today, because my mom and I are going to a graduation. But I will try at least all the other Saturdays.

Er, could you give me a link to where exactly the meetings are held, please?

Yeah, as I said, don't worry about it. It's always at the chat room, the link is in the top of the "amazing everything box" on the main RAS page

Good stuff, I like what I see obviously a little rough for a proper character sheet but I know this is just to show the other character designers what to do. So overall I have no critiques to offer, great work
