How did you get it to focus on the spider and not the background? Whenever I take pics of my spiders they're all out of focus.

Manual focus (autofocus gets easily confused by small anything) and a more narrow aperture than you'd expect to need (I went with f4.0 instead of f1.8, which is what I ideally would've used had my hands not been shaking so damned much).
I hope that helps! This shot involved more luck than it did careful planning, admittedly.

I remember when I was little and when I saw a spider, ZOOM. You could hear "Mommy! Mommy! A spider!" from all across the house. Then, of course, they killed it and we got back to whatever we were doing. So this I can relate with!

Haha. We were much more of a "SET IT FREEEEEE" family but somehow never managed to learn that blunt objects aren't really instruments of freedom so much as they're of violently crushing it.

I can't even put into words how much I can relate to this picture. You can almost feel that guy's heart skip a beat as he stares horrifyingly at the spider. *shiver* I'm an arachnaphobe, so this picture definately speaks to me. Great job!

Looking at any shots of spiders makes me feel a lot more comfortable with them. I suppose that'd change if one were to suddenly dart out from beneath my health insurance bill (ironically) (this happened a few days ago, scared the hell out of me).

Compressed air is usually enough to fight 'em off, I've found, without harming them. Not exactly a practical hiking tool, though.
