Description **I (after 3 years) uploaded a better photo of this drawing. The background used to be black, but the sunlight has bleached it to a purple. I'm thinking about coloring in the whole thing with conte so that it's back to it's dark glory**

This was one of my portfolio pieces, and it's from a scene in the movie Phantom of the Opera. It's poster sized, about 3ft high, and is done in colored pencil on black paper.
This piece means a lot to me because it got me through the hell that was Art 30. Not only did I have to deal with an "unfortunate" art teacher, I was in class full of students who didn't care. I got help with my projects every two weeks or so because she was busy 'helping' others (aka, on the computer checking her email) or lecturing us about how busy she was all the time. I was on the verge of dropping the class when I saw Phantom of the Opera, and Gerard Butler's and Emmy Rossum's performances blew me away. My fingers started to itch almost as soon as the movie was done, and I haunted the net for days looking for the perfect reference. I finally found this one, and knew I had to put pencil to paper. It was scary...only my second colored pencil drawing, but I'm glad I did it. Funny thing is that I only had the Phantom's hand to do when my teacher saw it for the first time and said "Oh wow! Aren't you glad you had me as a teacher?!" I almost decked her. Ah well, it got me through and now it's on my wall. I'm glad I did it, and to this day absolutely love Phantom of the Opera and Gerard Butler. He basically inspired me to get through this piece (sounds corny but what the hell) and I'm a fan to this day.

Here's the "other half" [link]
Here it is on the wall [link]

Thank you so much to who offered to clear up the picture and reduce the glare etc. I appreciate it

It does doesn't it? I love the pose for that reason, it's just the two of them in that one moment. *sigh*

It's amazing how well you work with pencils. When I first looked at this I thought it was a painting.

Thank you very much! Colored pencils are fun, it's a lot of experimenting and I like to be able to play around and see what does what with my art

It looks amazing. I'm still trying to figure out how to make prisma colored pencils do the trick for my art and make it look realistic.

The trick is to blend, layer, blend and layer and blend some more!!

EuroFoxx,
How can I possibly tell you what a fabulous artist you are--when you must have heard it all from so many others... You must have gotten rave compliments and many, many, wide eyed amazed on-lookers since you were a kid! This sensual, elegant portrait is beyond anything I can put into words! Every time I look at it, I'm entranced! I hope you're making a living with your craft--I would be sorry to hear that you do anything else but create... Your portraits of "Creedy" and Attila--and ALL the rest, reflect the passion & professionalism which you have given to them... I enjoy your artwork immensely. {DO MORE ERIK & CHRITINE! …sorry, couldn’t help myself…}
Sincerely,
NYTB
PS: I’m a bit overboard on Gerard James Butler & the Phantomβ€”you can tell by my gallary...

Thank you for your thoughtful comment. What clearly stands out from your comment is the fact that you have fabulous taste... aka, Gerard James Butler is the best actor, not to mention the best looking man in the whole freakin' world. As you know, my gallery's stuffed full of Gerard portraits because he's such a fantastic face to draw. By the way, have you ever heard of GALS?

Truly impressive. But how can pencil can be so opaque on black paper?
You captured the emotion verry well.

EuroFoxx In reply to PrincessTigerLili [2007-06-05 12:39:58 +0000 UTC]

I put down layers of color under the final layer, and I mixed a whole bunch of colors. I also used prismacolors, which are really 'creamy' and tend to go on like that.

I'm really impressed by the final product. I've tried dry pastel on black paper and it doesn't work at all.

Aside from this work being extraordinarily well done and presentable as a professionally rendered piece, it is an artistic feat that needs to be recognized. Two moving figures in one composition is nigh impossible for most artists to pull off. Yet you not only did each figure equally well, you drew them together in one tight perfectly proportioned combination.

This one is over the top!

EuroFoxx In reply to Denis-Peterson [2007-05-04 04:59:19 +0000 UTC]

Wow, thank you very much. I'm speechless and that doesn't happen often. This drawing is my baby. I didn't come up with the idea by myself, but there was something so touching about this moment in the movie that I wanted to try and capture it on paper. I'm so happy to hear you like this piece, this is the one that, if I could only choose one, I'd save from a burning building. Thank you again, I think this is the best comment I've ever received, and is for certain the one I'll look back on when I'm feeling totally inept and useless as an artist.

Great stuff!

EuroFoxx In reply to The-mind-of-Mikey [2007-01-21 16:52:08 +0000 UTC]

lol I like the "yeah not good" haha. I shade by layering on colors. Darker areas have darker combinations of colors, and if you look at a reference picture, the shadows aren't the same color as everything else right? I don't just use one colored pencil for a certain part, I mix and blend them to get nicer tones I hope that helped a little bit
