Description
**I (after 3 years) uploaded a better photo of this drawing. The background used to be black, but the sunlight has bleached it to a purple. I'm thinking about coloring in the whole thing with conte so that it's back to it's dark glory**This was one of my portfolio pieces, and it's from a scene in the movie Phantom of the Opera. It's poster sized, about 3ft high, and is done in colored pencil on black paper.
This piece means a lot to me because it got me through the hell that was Art 30. Not only did I have to deal with an "unfortunate" art teacher, I was in class full of students who didn't care. I got help with my projects every two weeks or so because she was busy 'helping' others (aka, on the computer checking her email) or lecturing us about how busy she was all the time. I was on the verge of dropping the class when I saw Phantom of the Opera, and Gerard Butler's and Emmy Rossum's performances blew me away. My fingers started to itch almost as soon as the movie was done, and I haunted the net for days looking for the perfect reference. I finally found this one, and knew I had to put pencil to paper. It was scary...only my second colored pencil drawing, but I'm glad I did it. Funny thing is that I only had the Phantom's hand to do when my teacher saw it for the first time and said "Oh wow! Aren't you glad you had me as a teacher?!" I almost decked her. Ah well, it got me through and now it's on my wall. I'm glad I did it, and to this day absolutely love Phantom of the Opera and Gerard Butler. He basically inspired me to get through this piece (sounds corny but what the hell) and I'm a fan to this day.
Here's the "other half" [link]
Here it is on the wall [link]
Thank you so much to who offered to clear up the picture and reduce the glare etc. I appreciate it

lol, I'd join you in the cult, I think I had the "Red Death" one in my room but then my mom stole it and put it up beside that one in the living room...I cried for days (not really, but it sounds more dramatic than saying that I was a little bit sad lol)

This is my favourite scene in the whole movie, and you've done a lovely job of capturing it. I can only imagine how great this must look in person as I know from experience that photographing pencils doesn't do them full justice. And three feet high! Man, I admire your patience, I get bored doing letterhead sized pieces if they have large areas of colour, let alone poster size. A great picture!

Thank you very much. Yep, indeed this one was a study in patience. I'm really easily bored as well, and colored pencil seems to take forever and a day to complete. I love this scene so much though, that it was worth it

I want to be Christine right here. What a stupid stupid girl, choosing the pansy over the second hottest creature on the planet. Johnny Depp always comes first, sorry Erik.
You are so amazing! You did this is Prismacolors? Wow! I use those too. I get scared when I use any other color than white because everything shows up. And I try not to blend too much because then it becomes shiny and oily and then you reaaaally can't take a picture.. wow, I'm rambling again! I'm sorry, very very nicely done! I'm amazed! See?

You can smudge colored pencil? with what?

FreedomSparrow3 In reply to EuroFoxx [2007-01-01 06:20:29 +0000 UTC]
With Prismacolor pencils if you blend two colors together, or just press really hard, it becomes shiny and after awhile will get an oily shade to it. It's weird. I've done that kind of blending in all of my pictures other than my newest Serenity. I didn't blend at all in that. The blending gives a unique quality to it that you can't do with some other pencils.

oh, like blending colors... I thought you were talking about like a blending stump for prismas haha, and I've never heard of that (hence I was confused). but yeah, blending colors is the way to go, otherwise nothing looks...natural. But yeah, prismas are the way to go

Amazing work. Taking on such a big piece can be daunting, but you did a great job of it. Love the contrast, and your technique is right on. Your balance of warm and cool shadows is really wonderful. Try as I might, I just can't think of anything to critique!

Yeah the canvases that big are ridiculously expensive. I think I'd be afraid to buy one of those monstrous ones just for the reason that if I messed up, that'd be trouble.

Wow. What kind of pencils did you use? They must be good quality. Or better yet, How many boxes of pencils did you go through. 3 ft? Damn. I love POTO but the stage version, not the movie.
This peice is incredible. I can't get over the detail. I've experimented with chalk pastels on black paper, but never colored pencils. This is great. For someone to get that good of details is amazing. I so have to cherck out your gallery now.

I used prismacolor colored pencils, and my white was pretty near gone by the time I was done. They're great though, they go on kind of creamy and the color stays the same as it is in pencil form instead of blending or fading into the black. I hope that helped, I'm really bad at explaining stuff lol.
