Description
I've been working on Sonic and creating fur for him for a while now. Long story short I have to recreate the fur but I am pondering would it be worth the hassle to spend a couple of months only to lose it again, and this is the first of many characters. I'm thinking of abandoning the idea of using hair and fur to save time. I haven't considered the dynamics involved with hair and fur with animation. If I adjust the base geometry to fit the thickness of the fur model which do you prefer?Related content

Hey mate! I've been looking your work for a while. I think it's very interesting what you're doing with Sonic's design, trying to deliver us something different from what we are used to.
My feedback for you: The quills in the spikes should not be long like you're doing. The quills are beggining at the base of the spike and goes all the way through it until the end, which is the pointy part. Make it short and place many of them throughout the spike. Don't make straight and long ones.
I don't know if you get what I mean, but I'll try to illustrate that to you later. You did that in Sonic Fan Film, and it looked weird. Like, he is full of short quills all around his body and, suddenly, they get very long on the spikes. That looks unnatural.
This one you can ignore if you want, because I don't really know what's your objective with this design. I would suggest you to give the character more shape contrast. All his body parts seems to be pretty much in the "same size". With that, I mean that you're following a too realistic proportion. That's why I said you can ignore this one, because if what you want is more realism in it, than go for it. I, personally, believe that a more cartoony proportion would look much better.
Keep it up man, you're doing a great job. I was thinking about doing an animation as well. I wanted to do a re-imagined version of Sonic 2 Ending cutscene. I know some people already did that, but my objective is to make it with a differente visual, with different designs and a new concept of Sonic World, which in that time was pretty straight forward. Also, I want to make a interesting storyboard for it, with good compositions. I believe that, with good storyboard and different concepts and designs, I can stand out.
Anyway man, keep doing your stuff and I'll be here to give you feedback. Idk about you, but I love to receive feedback, so I try to do the same with the others.
Edit: I think I'm too late, but I felt like giving feedback anyway

Hey ResidentEvilffs I most definitely agree to everything you stated. I changed a lot of the design and right now am taking a break from Sonic. You can see updates of the desing at www.facebook.com/mobiustheanimatedseries
Thanks for your feedback, I would love to do a Sonic 2 ending also. Funny its only a short cutscene and a few pics but the ending had so much story in my mind.

You're welcome, bro. I have already liked your page on Facebook and I look at it eventually. I am going to take another look today. I'll be waiting for more content bro. Keep it up.

The only problem I have with his design is the length of his quills.
So tiny...
I think you should lengthen them up a bit.

Yeah I changed them a bit, but I think I would like to make them short and later on if I keep making episodes I will make them longer.

Thanks, I decided to go with the cartoony version on the right and add the fur as texture only. I have updates on my facebook account. www.facebook.com/mobiustheanimatedseries
Also I worked on the live action Sonic Fan film, and your right its difficult to find that line between realism and cartoony and then make a decision and throw away the idea of the other.

Damn I'm going to refer people to this whenever the complains come (which is every other day). I answer them with the same speech about everything you mentioned. I do disagree with the fur texture thing but I reserve the right to change that if I feel its too much.
I learned a lot from the fans bashing Richard Kutas project to the point he quit. Most fans seem like they take out their frustrations rather than offering constructive criticism. Then some offer a critique and its all about how to make it more like Sega's Sonic. I always reply with "if I wanted to make Segas Sonic I would have downloaded their model and be done with it."
I'm actually developing all the characters within the same scene so that I can get the symmetry of the character features, I want them all to fit in the same world and have the same style.
I did add a small piece of geometry to fake a highlight in the eyes of the characters. I don't know if its going to work out in a low lit scene. I can always hide it and beef up the reflection.
Another rule I have is take criticism more seriously from more accomplished artists.
Its like if Average Joe says something isn't right about a model vs a modeler from dreamworks saying something isn't right with the model. When I hear harsh criticism I look at someone's portfolio before I reply.
I'm sure you've had your share of frustration defending your art.

lol wait until they find out Sonic has a neck in Boom, I want to see the episode when that scarf falls off its going to be chaos on the streets...... (pun not intended lol)
I had to explain a lot of things like Sonic having a neck cause it increases mobility of the head, its incredibly difficult to animate a character with a head attached to his torso. I worked on animation in the Sonic fan film and I designed Knuckles and I understood that the translation of these characters from 2D to 3D creates a world of problems. I think its time for a true redesign not a scarf.
Your stuff is coming out well, let me know if you need any help or advice. I never sent models back and forth from blender to maya to blender but I don't see why that wouldn't work. Do you have a facebook account?

I never thought about that, now that you mentioned it the backlash from Knuckles wasn't big. If they designed Sonic in the same style there would be rage all over the internet.

First of all I have to say that I like both versions.
The left Sonic reminds me strongly of the Saturday Morning Sonic, because his Blue is darker then the Blue Color from the other one.
The right Sonic reminds me of a cat or even a dog without his spikes. ^^
But I think that you should use the left Sonic with more fur and because it looks more unique.
Sonic's quills should be a little bit longer.
And Please add his Brown backpack.

I have shown it to one other person but he's working with me as a consultant on Mobius the animated series. I haven't released any side by side Sonic and Sally yet. I want to but the changes are so minor that I don't want to seem like I'm spamming the same images. I need to start texturing these models after unwrapping them of course. But I'm getting some good ideas and forming them around the same style by working on them simultaneously.

I can better give my opinions about pictures made by you which I have already seen than only speculating.
But I feel happy that you already have good ideas.

if you want you can model the spikes like u did with the tail and use bump maps as hail or just add some fur like the body! try to make a shorter neck and a little bit bigger head! if it came out more sonicy then keep it

ezraprogrammer In reply to eggmanteen [2015-01-16 05:00:56 +0000 UTC]
I think I'm going to use either bump or normal maps, I'm going to test it. I'll experiment with the head and neck sizes but I'm pretty happy with the proportions as is. Thanks

I did end up shortening the neck a bit. But its looking more fuller without the fur now. Now I'm making the spikes and head one big combined object.

I took your advice and shortened the neck a bit. I have the new version on my Facebook page but I haven't textured it yet, still working on the geometry.
