Description
The rise of Distributed Power Units (DPUs) is quite evident--10 years ago, you rarely saw them, and only on interstate coal drags that crossed the Rockies. Now they're everywhere; grain shuttles, double stacks, coal drags, anything with lengthy--and heavy--loads.Here, this lone SD9043MAC (UP #8225) serves as a DPU on the tail end of a unit coal drag, eastbound through Hays, KS.

There are two things I love about this image: the saturated color on the train and the very slight depth of field. That rich golden color on the engine is just perfect with the blueish orange sky. It complements each other so well. I like the lines in this piece too The way the rails are placed make my eye go from the front of the piece all the way back to the power lines and then back again.
If it were me, I would have liked to see a little bit more sharpness. I think it would've brought out the details, especially in the back, out even more. I've always loved photos of trains and you have an excellent photograph here. Very well done and keep up the amazing work.

Thanks! I've updated it already since your comments, and it should have a slightly higher amount of sharpening in the background (but not much).
I plan to reshoot this fairly soon with hopefully more contrast and DOF.

Why include the exposure information in the description? It's listed in the EXIF data

Some people don't notice that, and it helps me log my styles and techniques and whatnot.

I haven't seen any MAC's for quite a while myself. I'll have to drag my old full 6000HP MAC photos out soon!

Biggest mainline locomotives in revenue operation today. They're starting to get scarce, even out here.

Come to Kansas. You'll see at least a small handful.
