Description
My all-time favourite siderian*Full name
Stygian Stígandr Sætansen (freely translate this means Satan's infernal wanderer) Stygian is an adjective, so Stígandr is his real name
*Common name: Stígandr - by friends and family called Stian
*Nicknames…
White Devil, S.S., airplane
*Gender: male
*Species: siderian- Scandinavian type
He is a feline hybrid (Oriental cat, tiger), so NOT wolves/canids ><. Just take a closer look at the anatomy....and yes I know his paws are very large, especially with extended claws like here.
*Birthdate and age: 6 December , 37 years old at the ‘zero-point’ in my story.
*Family:
Father; Petrus Mortis Sætansen (Morten) blackmystica.deviantart.com/ar… , mother: Mara Grandal blackmystica.deviantart.com/ar… . Elder brother: Goran Gunnar Sætansen blackmystica.deviantart.com/ar… Elder sister who died before he was born: Stígana Gudrun Sætansen (Tiga). Mate: Vivanna Siyotès blackmystica.deviantart.com/ar… . Kids: Stygian Aquila Sætansen (Ekster), Stygian Lanceolatus Sætansen (Jay), Stygian Pandeon Siri Sætansen (Siri) Stygian Andor Sætansen (Morthian).
*Appearance
He has a masculine, calm, assertive, gentle, neat, and polite appearance but still with a kind of 'don't mess with me'- look, which causes deep respect by other siderians.
*Birthplace
Norway, in a siderian metacluster I probably will call Mistfjord - but I dunno yet. It's at least close to the human city called Trondheim.
*Shoulder height: 1,74 metres
*Bodybuild
He looks like a tiger-siamese cat hybrid. Very heavy skeleton tiger-like but still with the slender appearance of the Siamese cat. Rather lean and his robust bones are pretty well visible, as for his deformed lumbar vertebra. Limb bones are robust and strong. Heavy, muscular front legs and front-quarters in general, but very narrow hind-legs - his front legs are much stronger than his hind-legs. Very large shoulder-blades compared to other siderians; they move clearly visible when he's walking. Very, very large and bony paws with strong, curved and angled claws. His chest is narrow and small (so he has relatively little stamina). Pelvis is narrow, square shaped and looks 'fused' with the vertebra.
*Head
Roman profile with a very little dip in the middle. Narrow, triangle shaped muzzle. Skull is wide (wide zygomatic arches) and relatively flat. Cheekbones are pronounced. Jaw muscles (masseter and temporalis) are minimal which gives him a skinny face. His angular eyes are high placed and the edge is very dark pigmented, but the eye color is light yellow-green. An obvious downwards angle at the lateral sides of eyes (typical for Oriental cats) www.siamese-cat-breeder.co.uk/… . The low eyebrows (which follow the shape of his eyes ) give him a typical surly 'poker-face'. His ears are large and pointing forwards and lateral ('airplane'), placed high on his head. Kink in the middle, tips pointing upward.
*Fur
Colour; white hairs but dark (black) pigmented skin. Fur is thin, very soft and falls close to the body. Pretty short on the body but very long and sleek at the tail and neck. Ridge of standing hair between the shoulder-blades and both sides of the jaws. Soft and long tufts of hair on the chin (goatee), elbows, backside of the wrists and heels. little bit fuzzy hair near the base of his ears and pointy tuft of hair before his ears. Very long (over his shoulders) and smoothly falling thin hair in his neck. Lateral directed tufts of hair on throat and chest. Little bit curled under the jaw.
*Gait
Powerful, a bit stamping and heavy with big steps and mostly on the forequarters (most weight on his forelegs). He walks typically like a tiger.
*Voice and manner of Speaking
Low, raw, harsh and heavy voice with scary 'evil' undertone as if he has eaten a pinecone. Deep, raw sound that comes from his throat. He rarely talks but if he does, he talks formal, neat, scientific and straight to the point with as less words as possible. Sometimes a bit ambiguous for other siderians. He has no feeling for subtle communication and can sound (unintentional) gruff. After meeting Vivanna he becomes a bit more 'open' an talkative; also to friends.
Voice references:
- Chess with the Abyss (Dimmu Borgir) www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-pHh3… ; only the first two sentences between (0.16 and 0.38)
-Tyrants (Immortal), the whole song ; www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGjgth…
- King Carnival Creation (Dimmu Borgir) www.youtube.com/watch?v=evwYrh… Only the first sentence “left are the kings of the carnival creation carrying out the echoes of evil” and around the same sentence (the best reference!) between 7.14 – 7.22. For the rest, you can hear the same low voice sometimes in the song.
*Personality
Proud, with a big ego. Solitary, stoic and stubborn, independent and therefore asocial -he never accepts help and he hates weakness. He does not want to rely on others and he hates others relying on him. He does not make deals with others but solves problems himself. He never (or rarely) lies but he is selective with spreading information.
He can be gruff due to a his strongly reduced (or absent) sense of empathy. Demands to be respected by other males but doesn't ask for it and is therefore rather polite. He has a large personal space and if others disrespect him, he shows his typical death glare which could already shatter one's soul. If that doesn't work he uses his giant paws with big claws for a well directed powerful slap -after which he continues with his own business as if nothing happened. However, he wants to be honoured and respected so he generally avoids aggression to other siderians. He behaves neutral, polite and highly tolerant among others(if they show respect!), and even soft and pretty intimate to most ladies...then he shows his gentle and masculine side...
He has a very revengeful nature and he seems 'cold-hearted' because he has a reduced sense of empathy. He only can use his intelligence and logics in combination experience, to respond well in social situations.
He deeply hates humans because of several very negative experiences. That is the reason why he suffers from a post traumatic stress disorder, which can influence his mood. However he hides the mental and physical scars caused by humans. He is a fighter who never gives up. He will carry that burden througout his entire life. Fortunately he can also enjoy the beauty of life when he hangs around in the nature or when he is with his wife and kids.
Stian is very creative in solving problems (doesn't mean that he can make stupid mistakes), also as it comes to survival but he has a tendency to be reckless. He's highly adaptive to new situations and has often an 'I don't care about anything' way of thinking -especially as it comes to little irritating things in daily life.
He is pretty interested in his environment and he has a passion for biology and black metal (or some equivalent in the siderian world tough). He's clean and well-organized, and so is his work.
*Reputation
Powerful, respected but also dreaded (for some reasons…) Later he probably becomes a legend...
*Study
Life-loving biologist who is very interested in biodiversity and animal ecology. He first has worked on diverse behavioural ecology subjects and later focussed on the interaction of humans with their environment. His scientific work can be hard to 'read', because of his minimal and ambiguous word use. Based on his findings and conclusions he has started some population management projects…figuring out how to get the human population within healthy limits.
*Hobbies, interests
BIRDS, biology and anatomy and biomechanics, dissection, black metal music. Hanging around in the nature
*Special Abilities
Very quick reactions and reflexes in fights and very flexible movements (even with his backbone...), can jump very high and powerful.
*Fears
- Humans with guns when he has no armor
- Weakness and depending on others (he's allergic to weakness)
'Binding' himself to others
Other's hanging on him and demanding things.
*Dreams
a world free of humans
a life without his mental and physical scars
*Jewellery and stuff
Metal necklace with inverted pentagram, surrounded by a backbone. Metal chain bracelet and spikey backbone bracelet.
*History - summary
Stian was an 'afterthought' (9 years younger than his brother Goran) and his parents didn't had time for him, so he had to figure out almost everything on his own. He spend most of his time solitary, hanging around and playing in the forest and being freaked about the species and ecology around him. Sometimes had some contact with his favourite cousin Yava blackmystica.deviantart.com/ar… or his big brother Goran.
When his parents once came at home, they talked about their research to the over exploiting human species. Stian got curious in these animals, but also heard about the overexploiting and wasting nature of most humans. When Stian was around 7-10 years old, he ended up being caught, thanks to his curiousity and just bad luck. Sever mishandling had carved deep scars in his personality and this (and some more experiences) has resulted in a deep rooted hate for humans.
At an age of +/- 20, Stian decided to leave his home place to do more research on the ecology and behaviour of humans and some other animals. When he arrived (17 years later…) in the capital city Mystery Mountain, he quickly fell in love with Vivanna and he later came in contact with Falkner & Niver. Stian’s love for Vivanna and his kids, and the 'friendship' have opened his heart, so he becomes a bit more talkative and less closed minded. After Stian’s research results he (and the rest of the Sætansens family) concludes that the only way to save the biodiversity from a mass extinction is to 'manage' the human population…He leads the violent war against humans…mainly based on revenge for the deep mental and physical scars humanity has left on him.

Complex.... Absorbing... I mean besides I fucking love it by first sight. I almost had a mild heart attack upon the time. W O W. For how long did you work on the character, may I ask? (I'm very interested in character development)

Thanks a lot for the nice words. Kiitos - one of the few Finnish words that I know. Stian has been at my side since the 20th of August 2009. He just came to me like an avalanche (I still remember the very moment that I saw him for the first time) and has never left me. He had an invasive power beyond that of all other siderians whom I knew at that time.
That said - I have not actively made him up. Neither have I made up the siderian species. They just come to me and I draw and describe what I see and what they let me experience. It may sound weird that I don't seem to create them - but this is just my honest answer. I see them as spirits/souls rather than as 'characters' actually. I do 'research' what I see by carefully analyzing the stories they show me and by putting fragments together like puzzle pieces . So I'm actually not sitting there and actively make things up. They are very much alive and lead their own life. My art just shows fragments of their lives.
Also - I'm really curious why Stian in particular drew Your attention. There are more siderians in my gallery, so I wonder what made you to him.

Uh, yes, the word character really chains the character. I've personally same feelings about the feelings themselves, and then they just hover around and inspirate me and make me make desicions that build the character. I see so much but at the same time so little in a persona, for it lives to contact, contact with others than you as well, a little critter in an environment that molds it, makes it, and the critter reflects. When all that is together in me I can't seem to find space or words to describe just the character itself, not on paper, not in head. Stepping into a kingdom of many dreams all the way from childhood, clear like a steamy window waiting to be wiped clean with slightest effort but a dense motive, the surroundings are the ones that speak to me, on the other hand. Perhaps it's just that I see less, besides an aura and routes to others, in them than in the critters, and that complexes my thoughts less. That mentioned, I don't think the functioning of the character in a world is mixing me up so I dare to say just the character alone, stimulantless, is always at least, deep and complex, a living thing it is, enough to slow my thoughts down for a while. There's just SO much under the surface. I'm talking about scripting a real heart and soul, like scientists try to code that simple worm creature for many many years.
So if I ever get around successfully delving in that endless ocean of thoughts I can say it's a job well done in the end. But I'm most likely not going to be a professional writer, if you know what I mean...
Making things up, I've been around that as well. Just freaking horrible. It'll lead you and the thing off track, thus demotivate or labour an amount, stress you even. "And you wanted it to be just like that, but it didn't fit him.". What a little kid's cry!
Shortly said I know what you're talking about.
The most complex, delicate and loved characters attract me, but along with some others, hearing Stian's sound examples made me smash the comment like the sheep in my icon is. I really care for delicacy in sound, food, dreams, thoughs, feels, all. But delicate sounds are waves that go in and out of me at ease (rare thing) and are also the most common from the list in my life nowadays as I'm constantly facing self induced stress (and thus I especally love an interval's momentary fugitivity).
I always doze off when my literature teacher speaks. It's hilarious. She just stands there, speaking, and finds me here and there at the front row trying to pay attention to her subject.
Yeah.
It has been truly a stress to write this all on my phone which tends to crash the browser (Although of course I've kept copying my message on clipboard).

Lol– typing DA messages on your phone can be really perkele.
But yes, I agree that the word character also describes a souls character. For what you write, I can sense that you also experience characters in quite a real, spiritual way. There is indeed so much under the surface - of the souls who come to us. They are very much a complete person and I know some siderians (like Stian) better than any other soul – no matter if they are physically here or not.
And even movie characters that are actively made up, have been brought to life just by the energy that the creators put in them. That’s what my friend Sibera once told me, and I very much agree. But yeah, like you – I cannot actively make up a character. That feels so horribly wrong and they will never come to life. So I just have to passively wait until somebody passes by or reveals their story.
I think you experience ‘characters’ quite similarly as I do – I like that! And yeah, Stian’s voice is really catching and impressive. My friends used to say that he swallowed a pine-cone. Interesting you said that you like delicacy – because that is definitely what Stian is.

I see you know perkele, one third of the finnish language, great. It's a beautiful word indeed. Pretty much all a typical citizen needs to know to get along.
This has been an interesting comment chain, I have to say! I haven't spoken with a similarity in years! Thanks for that!
Don't you think it's just degrading when someone says so secularly about something that has so many levels of meaning to you? Of course in the means of a simple joke, a really ignorant side note or when the sayer is light hearted and knows you it's of no meaning other than a sip from the surface of a soup bowl cooling down.
When I was a kid and my friends got to find out about the differencies in us, like the type of music I listened to and who I was attracted to they just kept poking me around about it, although with no other means than of tease and interest, since they all were relatively similar to eachothers but not to me. Well, I didn't get discouraged any for I was just digging things I digged like anyone as kids and to this day I'm still in my own skin, same as ever and quite pleased, at least when knowing some others won't share the story, although without a friend that gets things. Fuck the gray mass, I don't get the philosophy... Are they just too satisfied, disengaged, insecure or what, even some of the ones that have the courage to express themselves with words. Boring they are not, I know. That is just draining. I've lived thoughts of bad parenting as my most likely ones, for the kid maybe isn't going to grow up confident (and that's obviously leading to all sorts of phenomenons).
Oopsy I started expressing my anger towards them. I'll be so mad at myself though, if I some day sink in them in a lack of stimulants, like in a zombie apocalypse when everything is lost and you have to keep up the old and be unable to create new or restore. I'm a person who stands behind her words when it comes to staying human and one that's been
Having pondered about self satisfaction earlier in this comment I think I won't in a long time get a spark or a sight of the truest, deepest, dearest character that would fill up my thoughts like my Stian, who is now dead, did with his (movie) character when I was young. Kind of dull about that, but I can remember the times so that a gap fills for as long as I plug the exit. But damn, do those memories haunt me. It's kind of hollow but I understand it, like a split screen of myself growing up and now or myself now and a person with the same level of thinking as mine's when I was young when I look in the foggy scenery in cool autumn of a decomposing building made of logs; you see, you sometimes accidentally bind your thoughts in objects while subtle staring at a point while thinking; the same spot I looked into when I thought; realized; about who I am, a kid, aged seven or what, liking so weird things, all different, but it wouldn't bother me a shit: the other screen still shows me a fear of greatness which a kid has and the other one that just suits it, I mean me now, and manages to relax and linger in the scene, just for a peace of mind and thoughts and for the sake of being in an archived folder of connected dots. Get off the wet cold. Dad's making hot potatoes. Something like that was in my mindset as I was standing alone in the yard, the sky was dark, it was a bit rainy and everyone else were inside. That's just a peace of mind to look back. I didn't have any stressful events as a kid and no shock in the face of that, it was just a subtle smoke, quickly evaporating thought, but that I still remember that means I am deep or smart in that area, seeing, comprehending feelings, subtleties... Born highly sensitive for short, but publicly that's a case of fake shits.
It's not hard to understand why I haven't anyone to discuss this. A person's soul is born fragile, you have to cherish and encourage that, and besides that there has to be the part of the person of the soul itself, and then it has to pass many years, porcelain in a poor cardboard box, develop, stay intact, stay sure, secure and, a good porcelain, taken for granted, themselves. And then one day someone's going to pull at their hand on the other side, to the company of the other, sparse, similar ones that have made it through, and then they'll realize just what a gift they have, how lucky they are. But the talented ones are like superman. Without making the use of their gifts and luck they can just feel like a classmate that never wanted to study, wasted their life, scattered around, tried to maintain but not fix. Life is rough. Oh thank god I have the legendary finnish Sauna from hell today where I can pop my vessels and drain the thoughts and stress and yesterday's weird bun.
There's a car, by the way, that has problems with it's antitheft system, and it's beeping very obnoxiously in irregular intervals. Very sweet indeed dipping into my thoughts as those beeps puncture into only my right ear drum, doubling the distraction.
fixed a word's repetition

Either I hear/see them somewhere (like most of my names - for example: Stian, Falkner, Yves), or I make them up myself (Morehvan, Niver) or I change excising names slightly into a new name (Jerald, Dunca), or I combine several elements of names/words into a new name (Nucaya, Vivanna), or I use words from different languages (Ekster, Adler, Steinur).

Indeed - dunno if you have ever seen an Oriental cat in reality? The first time I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw how narrow they are. I have just combined it with the (also very narrow) body shape of a tiger but kept the proportions of an oriental cat. But I can imagine that for people who never have seen these cats, that it feels unrealistic - but I have actually measured it based on photos of my own cats. Thanks! Yeah at least cheederians have guts and are just narrow - with whippets and such I'm a bit like: where the hell are the guts and how can they walk on such thin legs? But I actually got inspired by the fact that tigers are actually surprisingly narrow but are still very powerful. But Oriental cats gave actually even more inspiration - the first time I saw those cats I was like - Wow how narrow and long lined...so I took that as main reference for cheederians - see here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=BmdNB6…

Gorgeous work, and of course it's always good to see Stian again - I think compared to the last ref sheet he looks a bit more muscular (but still clearly visible bone structure), shorter-necked and has a narrower, more angular face, or that's how it looks to me.

Thanks! Yeah the thing is taht I saw a lot of anatomy mistakes in the older one. I see Stian as having a pretty tiger-like anatomy and that was not really the case in the previous one. His shoulderblades became larger and higher placed - his neck not necessarily shorter. But I saw tigers have a pretty short neck and I don't see Stian's long either. His face is actually broader - especially the muzzle than in the previous one - but I drew him in another angle now (more downward). Anyway interestning that you found some differences too

You're welcome.
And yes, I see that now - I just took a quick glance, and I can see how the shoulderblades would create the illusion of a slightly shorter neck. Ah, I think it must be because of the angle then, it creates the impression of more tapering.
Also, is it just me or was his back slightly longer in the previous one too, and his hindlegs held more flexed so that his back appeared to slope slightly? (to be honest, I slightly preferred that look since it drew attention to his powerful forequarters, but if you're more happy with him, then that's all that matters <3)

Yep ye're right -I compared the proportions of bodylength/hight with my cat and saw that I had to correct it a bit compared to the previous one. For this one I wanted to draw him standing 'square' - with all feet next to eachother. The previous charactersheet, however, represents how he normally stands. So I was thinking about redoing that old version as well - as in one more focussing on anatomy/proportions and the other more like how Stian appears : usually indeed with more flexed hindlegs and a downward sloping back. I like your critical look btw

Vannjaren In reply to FelisGlacialis [2013-09-12 10:59:25 +0000 UTC]
Ah, I thought so. And that explains a lot, actually - the main reason why I preferred the older reference a bit was because the stance and general appearance, to me, showed his character so much more - it just looked much more "Stian" in my mind. However, I like his head better in this newer reference.
And that seems like a good idea, or maybe just keep the old one as it is - this one could be more to show his anatomy (especially since the pose is the same as in the Cheederian reference, so maybe showing him standing "square" is a good idea since it's easier to make a direct comparison with the standard Cheederian lectotype as shown in the species reference), and the old one (or the redraw of it, if you decide to do so) could be to show more of his typical appearance.
And no problem.
Haha, a little ramble now on my part - most Krovendraekk generally tend to stand fairly square, but the North-Germanic/Kårstatt clan have a unique stance, referred to as "postural tilt", where the hindlegs are directed further back, and the front legs have a more open scapulohumeral angle. This makes the back slope slightly (whereas the shoulders and hips are usually level on other KDs), but this is a postural quality since the hindlegs aren't any shorter, and when in motion the back appears more level. I'd say for an example, compare the postures of these two dogs (whilst KD anatomy is very different from that of dogs, it still shows the effect I mean).

....I want to pet his fur.....
Probably that will be the last thing I'll ever do i this life, but it'd be worth it.

Man, he's such an interesting character..
I usually tend to love characters wich aren't "main", or playing a very big part. But here I can't help - he's already one of my favourite characters of your Cheederians.

Thanks! I'm usually like focussing on the 'side characters' too - but he appears to be not having the personality of a 'main' character . He will not appear like a 'main' in the story either - even though you will follow mainly him I think it will be his brother and niece telling the story XD He's not so talktative

I have a question. Do female of the species have wider hips or hips in a different position? If they look the same won't they have trouble with pregnancy and delivery? Or maybe they just have one or two cubs at a time? I guess that was more than one question, sorry.

Hehe good question - I like biologically critical questions. Indeed - females have both wider and a bit more tilted hips. They also just get one cub that gets born in a pretty early state. Male cheederians have usually narrower and more horizontally positioned hips - and especially Stian has rather extraordinary narrow hindquarters/ hips. He looks rather out of balance with his heavy shoulders and thin ass - which may in some cases be disadvantageous for him.

I thought he looked a little different from other males you've shown before. Thanks for answering my question. I always love how much thought you put into this.

Yep he does - Stian is a bit of an 'outlier'.

I would really like to know how you draw the fur. It looks really good. I love how you shade too, it gives realism.

Just wondering if you had a special technique or special brushes and their settings.
