sorry it's taken so long to reply, I don't get on DA as much I used to.
I got bored and bought a book [link] and that's how I learned the basics of how to do the knots.
I do my shapes similar, but I draw the grid into the shape. Not sure if that makes much sense though. But I do recommend the book for starting out!
