Actually the .223 Remington is NOT the 5.56mm NATO

You know, I looked into it, and your right. While they are interchangeable in certain rifles, they are two completely separate rounds.

I think i read somehwere that wall thickness on the brass on the 5.56 is thicker to stand up to the abuse of machine guns while the .223 is mass produced to finer tolerances to make it a more accurate hunting round.

Same differences apply with the 7.62x51 and the 308 Winchester.
