Alright, this is my first attempt at drawing artwork for a Dragon Age fanfic I'm writing and as you can see, this is where one of the leads bites the dust. I haven't actually reached that point in the story yet but this was a piece I felt I could do well enough at the moment. I won't go into details about who the character is and how they die so I don't spoil it for anyone willing to actually read the fic (here's hoping). However, I would like advice on how to make the lighting (or any other aspect) look better because I was at a bit of a loss.The drawing was inspired by artwork for an old video game called Nox. Shoutout to anyone who played it back in the day.

Great concept! I think a darker background might make the lightning more striking. Perhaps a dark grey gradient? It would also allow you to add more detail to the effect, such as smaller arcs and sparks.
