Description I am (pretty much) equal parts nervous and excited about sharing this image. Not only did we work REALLY hard on the day of the shoot, but I spent a fair bit of time working on this to get it perfect.

I really hope that hard work shows.

Note: The bald head is not Photoshop

Lighting
I used my usual three-point lighting setup:

A 65W Ring Light as my main light source with two Canon Speedlite 580EX II flashes for the rim-lighting.

The speedlights were inside 1.8 meter high gridded strip boxes on and were at 1/16th power. The ring-light was quite far away from her, so I got nice, small catch-lights in the eyes.

Model: Laurette Van Der Walt
Make-Up Artist: Zanel Allison
Location: Studio, Johannesburg, South Africa

One of a Unique nature and a take I've not seen from you my friend and worthy of the time to critique! Love the illumination of this character, not over done to allow us a look at this unique skin tone! Yet not so much to expose how this Fascinating make up job is done Wow!!

I love the cold star with a flush of color around the eyes and lips really brings the feel of the character out right down to the gill like fins on the face. Not sure if it’s the lighting or further tint of the skin tone but the slight hint of blue across this beautiful dome shaped head is another nice touch! Love this look Johann it was quite the surprise! It leaves you wondering, what’s the story to be told of such a life form!! e.deviantart.net/emoticons/w/w… " width="23" height="15" alt="" title="Wow!"/>

If I can just STOP fiddling with the latest one, then maybe you guys can! I'm driving myself bonkers! It's almost done though. It will, hopefully, be posted tonight

Stellar make-up work on her. You both should be very proud. Everything seems to be seamless when it comes to the modifications such as the scalp piece...unless she really is bald. lmao I also want to commend you my friend for showing your lighting setup. I wish more photographers would do as such. Sometimes as artists we think we're giving our secrets away thus creating competition when actually the opposite is true.....instead we are inspiring. That is what you are J. You're an inspiration for continually growing as an artist even though you are a pixel ho. *wink* Really beautiful work between the both of you and I look forward to seeing you both work together again.

Aw, thanks so much, Melly! I really appreciate that, especially from an amazing artist such as yourself.

She wasn't bald, hehehe. It was a bald cap

As for sharing the lighting setup, I wanted to give a bit of insight behind how I set up my lighting in the hope that it might help someone. I know how frustrating it is to see an image and wonder about the lighting, but not asking the artist for fear of sounding forward. So, I decided to save people the trouble and share. Sharing is caring, after all

And just because you know how a photograph was lit, doesn't mean you can do it

You are more than welcome as I really DO look forward to seeing your new adventures. Nonetheless for what your reasons of sharing were, It's appreciated by many I'm sure. Of course I do as well although I will most likely never have the opportunity to photograph with studio lights...so I can just live vicariously through you. haha.
As for your saying at the bottom...how true. Which in turn holds true for this.....just because you own a professional camera, it does not automatically make you a professional photographer. I can't tell you how annoyed I get at photographers with their big rigs...huge lenses and expensive cameras sticking their noses in the air once they see my gear. Funny thing is, 99% of the time my pictures turn out better. lol It's not the camera that makes the photographer...it's the passion from the photographer that makes the photograph. So, you my friend have plenty of passion and then some.
Not sure if you celebrate Thanksgiving there, but if so...may you and Shane have a very blessed one. Much love your way.

"just because you own a professional camera, it does not automatically make you a professional photographer"

AMEN! Hells yeah! And having better equipment doesn't mean your pictures will be better! It's always so funny to me when I see people say "Oh, that's an awesome image, you must have a very expensive camera".

We don't celebrate Thanksgiving, nope. It's a US only holiday as far as I know? Happy Thanksgiving to you guys though! And again: happy birthday!

Did they really shave all her hair off, or is it just a bald cap and lots of makeup to cover the eyebrows? (Oh, and this is very good! You can definitely tell a lot of effort was put into this!)
