Description
Pre-Y2K artwork that I had submitted to another defunct online contest - this one was known as the Monthly Bishoujo Art. What was neat about it was that it had two character(s) in spotlight and you could choose which to draw. My one and only submission to the MBA was for Naoko Takeuchi's inner senshis ('soldiers' - or scouts in the US) of Sailor Moon.

I had also submitted this to a local manga-style anthology called Culture Crash (defunct as well), and it was eventually printed in one of their issues.

Sera Kurisumasu
Granted Naru/Molly (the girl with the brown fur hat) isn't a sailor senshi, but she is supposedly Usagi/Bunny's best friend and I felt sorry that she has had very little exposure in the latter series. Besides I needed another girl to hold a KATAKANA symbol. Speaking of which, the various characters (or symbols) that they carry spell out - starting from Usagi and working counter-clockwise, ME RI KU RI SU MA SU or Merry Christmas. Neat, huh.

The image took four days to pencil: first day to do the rough positioning of the characters; 2nd for Naru, Minako (Venus), & Ami (Mercury); 3rd for Usagi (Moon) & Chibiusa (Chibimoon), 4th for Mamuro (Tuxedo Claus), Rei (Mars), and Makoto (Jupiter). Afterwards another four days was needed to color: first for blocking in the solid colors and layer assignment; 2nd concentrated on the hair and fur; 3rd for the symbols and partly the clothes; 4th to finish the clothes and background.

In comparison to the other artworks, this one uses a far different style (what I call noseless art) aiming for a kawaii ("cute") look. Furthermore, this is the first time that a flame effect was ever attempted... one that is satisfactory but not truly impressive IMO.
