Description

Don't be fooled. You fall asleep in here you might wake up, oh, fifty years later or more?

... but maaaan doesn't it look comfortable.

Made in DAZ Studio, postworked in GIMP 2, told you guys this room might appear. ^_^ This is actually one of my favorites of my Portal pictures, decided to replicate - and improve - on the "hotel room"/suspended animation chamber that Chell wakes up in in Portal 2. It's just so peaceful. And it gave me the chance to kitbash as well as try out some techniques for putting in walls and postworking.

This is truly fantastic. Must've taken you hours to get a clean result with such a dim-light. I gave up trying something like this after a couple of hours and 0% convergence.

Thank you! First off, thank you, it’s one of my bigger personal accomplishments, because 1. How it turned out, and 2. How close I could get to the game. But personally, I think mine looks more cozy.
Second, I have two tips for you, because I totally feel you in frustration.
1. I do most of my rendering overnight. If I do it during the daytime, I get antsy and irritable. My solution is to get everything ready to render, and then wait until nightfall to hit render. Doesn’t mean I don’t check the lighting in the preview before then! ... I might wake up to tears and disappointment if I did that. 😅
2. Ghostlights. Ghostlights are your friends, they are planes made 0.001 opacity and with the km setting for light, I believe Kindred Art is the one who perfected the process and put out a few products in the Store. I use these for most of my lighting nowadays, along with HDRI’s.
Bonus: Set your ffstop in your Render Settings to 22. This makes the lighting simulation more realistic. Yes, you’ll have to play with exposure and everything else, but it’ll help the look of the lighting!
Hope this helps!

I might've phrased my comment regarding my 'dilemma' poorly. I gave up on trying to light an interior scene using only an HDRI light or a Sun\Sky setting, in an effort to mimic real life lighting. It can be done, and it gives truly beautiful results, but it requires a much more powerful PC than the one I have, and very long render times (overnight, like you suggested). As far as I can tell from your render, the only lights beside the HDRI are the small point lights above the wall lamps?

1 - I've woken up in tears MANY times before hehe, I know exactly how you feel.

2 - Been there, done that even before switching to iRay (LuxRender Mesh lights). And I couldn't agree more with everything you said, they're probably the best way to light interior scenes without sacrificing rendering time. Thank you for your helpfulness and sharing your knowledge.

Actually, there are at least two Ghostlights in the room: one is helping the plane I used for the fake windows, and a dim one from above just to give it a bit of more general ambiance.

This is fantastic! When I look at this I half expect Wheatley to jump out and tell me to say Apple...
