It's not a poor attempt, I quite like it. Besides, you've still got at least a week to improve.
Here's my suggestion. Shave a little bit off the top and bottom, making it more rectangular. Those are always cooler. Also, if you move the typography into the right corner there, it'll sorta anchor the avatar and look cool. I kinda like the border, don't change that.
I'm suprised you came up with this in such a short amount of time. Kudos

He means remove some of the top and bottom, so it's not square, but rectangular, that way, the file is still 80x80 or whatever, but it doesn't look it.

I've taken off two pixles off the top and bottom, maybe two wasn't enough?
