Description
I guess if you saw me, the first thing you would say is I’m a nice, normal kid. I probably live in a nice house with my own room, a loving family, maybe a few pets and siblings. But of course, you would be SO WRONG.
I’ve been through too much to be nice with people, I’m the furthest away from being normal, and I don’t have any of that. Yeah, I have a house, but I’ve never seen most of it, or even just the outside. My room consists of a small dog crate, like the ones you get at Pet Smart or something like that. The only people I’ve ever seen was my caretaker, who incidentally isn’t a very good caretaker, and Alex, his son or whatever. Only in my wildest dreams would I have a normal pet, not even close to a sibling, but I guess Alex could qualify as both. I was lucky if I even got fed regularly.
I guess I should tell you who I am before you get too confused. My name is Danny. I never was given a last name or even my first name. So I gave myself my own name. Danny Phantom. Pretty cool, huh? I liked my last name. It was like a code word. Well, it would be if I had any friends, which I don’t.
I’m roughly fourteen years old, according to my aforementioned ‘caretaker’. I had to give myself a birth date too. I picked December 21. I guess I like winter so much, I picked the day it officially starts to be my birthday. Not that I’ve ever seen winter. I just know that when winter starts, Vlad (My ‘caretaker’) turns up the heat in his house and warms up the lab. And, when Christmas comes around, Vlad has a huge dinner and brings me some scraps of it if I’m good and he ever thinks about it.
I’ve seen my reflection in the metal trays in the lab, so I kinda know what I look like. I have white hair and green eyes, I’m kinda scrawny, and a bit short for my age from what Vlad says. Oh yeah, I almost forgot.
I have wings.
Yep, big, black, feathered wings. I have a fourteen-foot wingspan and proud of it. I’m proud of the little things since I have precious little to be proud of. I don’t like being a mutant freak, but I’m used to it.
Vlad tells me things to learn more about me. I guess he picks up my intelligence by my answers. All he’d have to do is be a bit nicer to me and ask politely and I’d tell him. And by nicer, I mean set me free. Take it from me, if you stay crouched inside a Kanine Kamper for a few hours, let alone years, you get pretty stiff. Alex is lucky. He gets to have his own room, but I’ve never seen it. Vlad does let me out for an hour each day. I only get to stretch for a few minutes, then I have to train and do endurance tests.
My training is made up of sparring with these mutant-wolf things like Alex until they are all knocked out or rendered useless and then practicing flying until I pass out or can’t go on. I don’t get to fight Alex because he thinks he’d kill me if he did fight me. I still think he’s just scared to fight me.
If I’m good, I get to go upstairs and lay in front of the fire. (Of course, I can’t go on the furniture or leave that very spot.) If I’m bad, I get a few nasty rounds with my shock collar and shoved inside my cage. Alex finds the remote and shocks me just because he can. I still don’t know why Vlad doesn’t lock HIM up. I mean, c’mon, a wolf hybrid can walk around the house, but I can’t?
Sometimes I feel like a dog, forced to do whatever Vlad says and be like a little angel. Okay…that was a bit of a pun. Duh, wings. Alex is sorta like me, but he’s an Eraser. (That’s what a wolf/human hybrid is called.) Anyway, my day started out with Vlad tapping the top of my cage.
“Wakey, wakey!”
“Go away.”
“Now, now, let’s not be bitter.”
“Can’t I sleep in once?”
“No. I wanted to give you a treat today.”
I sat up, bumping my head on top of the crate. I hate doing that.
“Ow. What? Are you going to let me move upstairs and stop living in a crate?”
He gave me a stern look.
“Nice try, Daniel, but no.”
“Darn, I guess that doesn’t work. Well, what is it?”
“If you be good, you can come outside and fly. No cage, no wires, nothing. Permitting that you come back when I say and you don’t leave my property. The world is dangerous for you out there. You could be killed or captured and experimented on.”
“I’m captured and living in a cage. How much worse could it get?”
“I don’t experiment on you and you know it.”
“Doesn’t mean you won’t start.”
“Enough.”
Vlad sighed.
“Do you want to go outside or not?”
“Yeah, yeah. What’s the catch?”
“Catch?”
“Yeah. What do I have to do?”
He gave me a kind smile. Creepy, actually. He NEVER does that.
“You just be good.”
He undid the latch on my cage and let me out. I had to crawl out, then I stretched until my joints cracked.
“Can’t I get a size bigger at least? I’ve been in a medium for the last two years.”
“If you be good like I asked before, I’ll get a large, how about that?”
“Deal.”
He led me outside through a door he had in the lab. We came to the normal training area, which was just a big, fenced-in area with a roof. Various objects like a scarred rubber ball and a big barrel were strewn everywhere. As we passed the barrel, I caught a strong smell of blood. Fish blood. And scales. Eraser food. All they needed was a bite of bird kid. Alex would say he needed ketchup with his bite though.
Vlad walked over to the door that opened to the outside and held up a key. I’ve always dreamt of getting my hands on that key. The reason? It opened all of my locks.
Vlad stopped.
“Now, now. I need one thing to ensure you’ll come back.”
“Hey, you said no cages, no wires, nothing!”
“Ah, but I just want you to wear this.”
He held up a black collar. I sighed.
“No shock collars.”
“Oh no, my dear boy. Just a collar. No electricity or batteries.”
I eyed it with distaste. Collar on and fly? Wide open spaces…oh, man it was so tempting…
“Fine.”
“Excellent.”
He snapped on the collar, then unlocked the door.
“Enjoy, my little badger.”
The door swung open. I ran, then leapt into the air. I snapped my wings open and shot up into the sky, beating my wings. I got a sudden rush of adrenaline as I flew straight up.
I never flew up this high. The most altitude I got was probably twenty feet. The height of the cage. Yeah, geez, cages. They suck, big time. There were no cages in the sky though. That I loved. And the best part? Alex can’t fly.
Okay, it’s official.
The sky RULES!
I dove down, clasping my wings together, opening them again to avoid a tree. I banked right, flying in a tight circle before flapping back up. I closed my eyes, letting the wind ruffle my hair. I coasted for a bit before passing over a stretch of black something on the ground. Right away, I suddenly rose up.
I yelped, folding my wings. Big mistake. I opened them again, realizing why I was rising.
It was a thermal.
I laughed. Thermals were really just waves of heat rising off the ground. The heat also gave a good opportunity to get some altitude without using energy. And how do I know this, you ask? Being cooped up in a cage, I’ve never been to school. But Vlad always had a TV down in the lab where he watches shows, and one time he left it on a channel with some bird documentary. He was sleeping, and it was pretty boring. I only liked the parts where they showed birds flying and I heard about the thermals.
Speaking of Vlad…
“Aw, crud.”
I realized the black was a road. I was off Vlad’s property!
Wait…was that good or bad?
I felt a small shock in the collar.
Bad.
He had lied…it was a shock collar. I banked left, turning around and hovering. I finally saw the outside of my house. Well, Vlad’s house.
It was a huge flippin’ castle.
I shook my head.
“C’mon, Vlad. A huge house and I sleep in a dog crate?”
I sighed, coasting as I flew back. A few minutes later, I descended, braking a bit too slow. I kept touching the ground, only to jump back up because I was still going too fast. I tripped, flipped, then crashed into the ground.
“Ow…”
My wing was killing me as it was being crushed under my chest. I got up, weakly pulling my injured wing in.
“Okay, it’s official. I suck at landing.”

I might, but I don't know where the chapters I did write are. They're either hidden in the trashheap of a external drive I have or it was fried when my laptop crapped out. If I find anything, I'll post it up.

Yeah, I don't think I'll be updating it anymore. I've found the wonder of OC's. Thanks for the comment, though.
