Here we have the complete ink for Within. All the background texture and definition has now been laid down with the crow-quill (alongside the brush work). I've tried to keep the nib strokes thin so as to not draw attention away from the thicker lines used on the figure. By this time, one has a good idea where the light will be coming from, as I've placed some shadow lines on the right side of the stone faces. Also, the cross-hatching underneath the right side of her hair on the wall will help throw that whole area to her right into shadow as her body blocks the light.

Because I've set the piece up for color, I've tried to eliminate a lot of line work as it will allow the color to partially define texture and shape. I've had to think a few steps ahead, deciding in advance which textures will be interpreted through the color, and which will best be defined with the ink. You can get a fair idea of how all this will transpire by looking at Weapon of the Spirit , because the process has been the same for both of these pieces.

Before I apply the color, I went back and erased any errant pencil lines, as not doing so would muddy the color as the pigment would pick up the graphite from the papers surface. There is much debate about erasing (some say yea and some say nay), and over the years, I've tried many different types of erasures. The problem was that erasing would always damage the inkline by removing the finish. The solution came in the form of a handy little eraser made by Pentel, called the Clic Eraser (model ZE22). The soft white eraser is encased in a pencil shaped holder. As one uses up the eraser, you click the handle to revel more of the eraser. The great thing about this is that it maintains a fairly decent point, which allows you to get into small areas to erase as you go. Another wonderful feature is that the soft eraser doesn’t destroy the surface of the paper on the original!

Throughout the penciling and the inking, I've been thinking about, writing, and refining the story that goes with the illustration. The final version should be in the neighborhood of 800 words and will be posted with the final deviation.

Right now, however, it’s time to dust off the water-dyes!

Lovely as always Your ability to use a ridiculous amount of texture and still get all the details as well as the spacing to come across is always as mind-boggling as it is inspiring.

Thanks, Kate! The detail does get kinda silly at times, and I really am trying to simplify...um...soon. Not this time, though, as there are too many lovely rocks to render, lol!

I love how clean is your inking, and the amount of detail!
This has been a very useful tutorial so far: can't wait to see the colouring.
