Description
body div#devskin0 hr { }
Recently I get a lot of notes or comments where people ask me for permission to use my journal templates. And I’m sure I’m not the only one.
First I was confused why people do that, but then I figured out that they might get confused by something like this in any description of a template/skin:
You need to have a Premium Account or to be a staff member/volunteer to use this.
:thumb139539507:
Some still don’t know what the requirement for the CSS feature is and that’s why they think that, if they don’t belong to the ones listed above, they have to ask to use it. That is wrong!
Everyone who submits a template to the “Journal Skin” or “Complete Journal CSS” gallery offers their templates for free. Some might have some rules for usage, but still they are all for free use – unless there is some kind of hint, that you have to pay for it. But then you won’t have access to any CSS code.
If someone mentions Premium Accounts, staff members or volunteers it doesn’t mean that only those people have the permission to use the templates. It’s just mentioned because actually they are the only ones who will be able(!) to use them.
The CSS feature is only for those people who have paid for their accounts, who belong to the staff of deviantART or who gained seniorship.
Only those people will be able to install AND use the skins or to add the downloaded CSS of the usual templates.
Of course you can still click that install button of a certain Skin, but nothing will happen, if you have a free account. When writing on a new journal or editing an old one, you won’t have the CSS option tab on your journal page, so you can’t apply the Skin.
If you aren’t sure what kind of account you have, go to your profile page. Below your icon/username there is a bar that contains different information about you.
The second block tells you, for how long you have been already part of deviantART and right below you will either have the information of how long your Premium Membership will still last or if you would need one.
In case it says that you would need one, you don’t own one yet and you won’t be able to use it. No matter what you try, no matter how often you click the install button or download a Complete Journal CSS.
In this news article I already explained some more facts around Journal and Gallery CSS: news.deviantart.com/article/85…

this article was helpful to me. I did understand the topic in the article but what was helpful was the fact that someone took the time to explain what looks like information that should be obvious! I am still trying to navigate in the world of computers "how to" do lots of things that come easy to some people. Thanks for the time and patience you took to write this article!

Yes sometimes people think that the basics are no longer needed..not true! We all start out with the basics at some point for something..important stuff! Thanks again for your efforts!

Yes that's right, but it's also hard to explain things, because you never know what people already know. Some people get bored then and other might get totally confused.

You see.. when DA changed their paid account status from "subscription" to "premium member", lots of people complained. That's one reason why.
I guess new users think "premium" mean some kind of "special treatment" some users get for some reason they don't know... all the while it is no more than a paid account.

Hm yeah, could be one reason. But it's difficult to state it clearly in a way that everyone will understand

nya, the article will help - and just a note: for a free account you do still -have- the CSS tab, but when you preview the journal it tells you it won't work.

Oh ok, don't have any accounts without subs. Didn't knew that. Could you make a screenshot of it for me? From that preview message? Would be extremely helpful.
And i will see that i'll find an admin who will edit this for me.

Thanks for posting this. I get asked way too often. What I understand even less is the premium members who still ask permission...

I get that too - I mean, it's cool people tell us that they are using it, but it's there to be downloaded or installed....
I think it's all about lazyness

GinkgoWerkstatt In reply to Rose-Rayne [2009-10-15 19:31:33 +0000 UTC]
It's nothing wrong with that, but as it happens that often, i thought that something like this might be useful
And it's a sign that it is not highlighted enough who can use CSS and who can't
Imo it would also be better, if the install button would be disabled for non premium membership accounts.

HannahChapman [2009-10-15 18:50:09 +0000 UTC]
I've heard that being asked a lot too
Perhaps it needs to be even simpler (if that's possible)
maybe - "if you have the ~ symbol next to your user name you won't be able to use this skin" or a ~ in a circle with a cross through it (like a no smoking sign) for those who speak little or no english.

GinkgoWerkstatt In reply to HannahChapman [2009-10-15 19:32:42 +0000 UTC]
I tried it that way as well - like in the other news article that is mentioned - but no idea if that works and people will really know what kind of account they have
Haha such a sign would be awesome!

I was thinking about writing it in big bold letters on my journal comments but I didn't have the courage.

Well there's a link to my FAQ on all my CSS deviations, and in the FAQ I tell very clearly that my CSS are free xcept the commissions of course, so if people really do read what I write, they should know.
