Description
Today I did my final presentation for my Contemporary Art Seminar class, which went over SO much better than I had expected! I talked about exploring innovative new techniques and applications for graphic design, the kinda stuff that could redifine an already ambigious category of modern art. I was the last one to present, and most other students had focused on some really negative topics like abortions and the value of the almighty dollar over human life. Needless to say, no one saw a lego sculpture coming, and I got a hugely positive response. As an artist, I'm really not used to persistant applause! It even got passed around the class. Commissions were requested.I got the picture using my gameboy camera, and then adjusted the quality in photoshop. Ironaically enough, I had every peice I needed for my face from the Frankenstien mosaic alone, [link] but I ordered another kit to do the background- which just arrived an HOUR before class.

Well, how long did it take you to make? Did you just buy a big thing of legos, or did you get specific colors? How big was this peice?
Thank you so much, by the way

These things usually take a few hours, more than one afternoon.
Years ago, the official LEGO website offered a service where you could order a mosaic based on any photo, I ordered a couple kits that were just bars of white, grays, and black. Most of my designs are done using photoshop. The piece is about 14in X 14in.
If you want to try something similar, there is a free basic design tool here: www.lugnet.com/cad/mosaic/
And you can buy bricks in bulk from other collectors here: www.bricklink.com

im sure after abortion and money, no one would have thought of legos. at least you caught them right after the boring ones. that shoulda gotten their attention.

talking about abortion and money in a contemporary art seminar?
guess its either... the american way.. or maybe jsut human nature.. to focus on the negative ~shrugs~ guess its harder to ignore than the positive ~shrugs~

Ha! How very true, and poignant. Personally, I find that to be the sad fact about most modern art.

Well, I did all the dark grey around my head in that last hour before class. I'm not sure how long it usually takes tho, I varies in complexity. Plus, I was actually a little stoned when it happened...

5 tones, If you're counting black or white. Lego does offer kits for these, but you have to order directly by calling or online.
