Science Fiction in Horror and Fantasy

When one thinks of creatures that lurk in the realms of horror and fantasy, an often overlooked detail is how science influences their creation and how action and adventure bring their narrative to life.

Take the case of the Mummy, an age-old concept of fear of the dead coming back to life. To the ancient Egyptians, mummification itself was a form of science rooted in their religious beliefs. While Universal put a fantastical new spin on this iteration seen in 2017’s the Mummy, it still kept true to the roots that scared theater goers of yesteryear—the walking dead powered by mysticism. But however powerful this mysticism, it gained control of biological science to reanimate this corpse and bring the Mummy back to life. Every creature, monster or character from the shadows of a nightmare can find its origin in the annals of Dark Science.

Take a look behind the scenes on how The Mummy blended mysticism and science fiction in the creation of Dr. Jekyll’s lab - The Prodigium.

Dr. Frankenstein's lab in Mary Shelley's 1819 novel was the birthplace of a new kind of science. In the book Mary Shelley uses Frankenstein's experiment as a way to explore the limitations of scientific progress, and to ask questions about the ethics of it.

Specifically, can science resurrect the dead, and more to the point, should it? Generations of storytellers after Shelley would incorporate examples of science being used to dark, foreboding ends. Not least among them was the Robert Louis Stevenson character Dr. Jekyll, and his famously destructive alter-ego, Mr. Hyde.

Dr. Jekyll's lab, housed in London's Museum of Natural History, also serves as a headquarters for a secret group dedicated to finding and neutralizing evil. It is called The Prodigium. In The Mummy, Dr. Jekyll has been transformed from merely being a scientist with a dark secret to an academic who specializes in evil "Mary Shelley... explore the limitations of scientific progress, and to ask questions about the ethics of it." and spends his life working to hunt it down. The Prodigium is the venue where Jekyll conducts his studies and stores artifacts. Having access to the resources of the museum allows him to perform in-depth research. Among the many curiosities seen inside the lab you'll find the skull of Dracula as well as The Creature From the Black Lagoon's arm.

Studying such auspicious and dangerous creatures is far from what constitutes a routine scientific endeavor. Just like Dr. Frankenstein flipping the switch and electrifying his cadaver back to life, this is a different kind of science with its own set of dark consequences. Dark science is what happens when science goes too far. For Dr. Frankenstein, it meant inadvertently creating a monster. For historical characters in fiction like Dr. Faust, it meant making a deal with the devil in order to discern the secrets of the universe. The Prodigium ultimately may have a noble goal driving it, but that doesn't mean that it's safe, or that unintended consequences can't spring out of it.

The idea of dark science originates from exploring the connection between scientific progress and the potential for danger. By trying to break the barrier between life and death, Dr. Frankenstein creates a monster. In looking for evidence of a long-lost species, the scientists in The Creature From the Black Lagoon incur the wrath of a mysterious menace. In Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea men use new technology to explore new depths and get more than they bargained for. In The War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells, a super advanced civilization from Mars attacks earth with metal walkers equipped with hi-tech weapons. Science has long provided a foundation for tales of monsters, evil forces, and other mortal perils. When Mary Shelley sat down to write Frankenstein, one of the ideological "Dark science originates from exploring the connection between scientific progress and the potential for danger."questions she wrestled with was the idea that although progress in society followed from knowledge—like diseases being cured, or transportation improving—there was no inherently good guiding principle underpinning that progress. In other words, technological advances could be used for evil just as easily as they could be used for good. That truth opened up all kinds of possibilities, especially for storytellers looking to tell harrowing tales. Many of the most recognizable horror stories and thriller titles of all time—Frankenstein, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, War of the Worlds, and The Creature From the Black Lagoon among them—deal with man's pursuit of knowledge leading to terrifying outcomes, or show how technological progress can have deadly consequences.

Although Mary Shelley, Jules Verne, and H.G. Wells are considered among the founding authors of science fiction, the genre didn't exist as we know it when these writers were alive. These authors laid the groundwork for later science fiction storytellers, and they also founded a long trend of combining speculative, fictional science with Horror or Gothic storytelling. The common element that stories traversing these two genres almost always shared? Action, and plenty of it. It's only natural for conflict to arrive when weaponized machines start taking over cities, or when re-animated corpses begin terrorizing the living, but heroism and action-packed adventures also provided a solid underpinning for these kinds of stories, which manage to explore profound questions about society and progress while still providing a thoroughly entertaining experience. His work requires putting himself in harm's way, but it also requires the strong mental faculties of science. And the fact that he has a violent alter-ego ensures that chaos and action will follow wherever he goes. Dr. Jekyll's future path of horror, science fiction, and action will definitely be worth keeping an eye on.

1. I quite enjoyed the story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde as well, because there was a lot of symbolism inside of the story's dark words. What I got from it was that each and every person that has been born upon this Earth has two sides; one of good, the other of evil. This can also be perceived as our thought processing in order to do the right or wrong thing. It can take something as simple as a thought of as serious as a potion in Jekyll's case to switch us from one version of ourselves to another.
2. Since it's regardless of consequence... I wouldn't mind bringing technology to a whole new perspective, such as 4- dimensional experiences. It would be nice to travel London or Paris without the cost of traveling there.

.I really like the idea of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, where he tried to run away from his thoughts and feelings with science and ended up with something much worse

.We all believe we would change the world for the better if only we had these powers, we believe until the price of believing becomes to great

.My greatest fear with science is that, i'm afraid we will be looking for a cure for something, and end up making it much worse

1. My favorite example of a sci-fi influence in a horror/fantasy story is: the anime-series "FullMetal Alchemist: Brotherhood", the PC-games "Portal" and "Portal 2", Toby Fox's Indie-RPG "Undertale" (concerning the Amalgamates) and the recent Indie-horror game "Bendy and the Ink Machine".
2. If I could create or manipulate science/technology to better my life, I would bring gaming to a realistic level (like in "The Matrix" trilogy and an episode of the 3rd season of "Black Mirror"), and maybe I would do it regardless of the consequences!
3. The one example of a potential misuse of science that scares me (or rather, gets to me) is when scientists modify something in either our bodies or the food we eat to give out some sort of miracle-cure--but in the end, we end up mutating into mindless blood-thirsty monsters, like in "Resident Evil" and "I Am Legend".

  • What is your favorite example of a science fiction influence in a horror or fantasy story (movies, TV, books, comics, etc.)? That would be how a man could find a way to separator his good side from his bad like in the movie, play and TV shows that have Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
  • If you could create or manipulate science/technology to better your life, what would you do, and would you do it regardless of the consequences? I would use it to find out more physic injuries or causes of blackouts or other illness in everyone and myself a lot faster and more accelerate so we can work on fixing it much sooner and i would do it no matter the consequences.
  • Is there an example of a potential misuse of science that scares you? Probably with A.Is being more in-depend the last thing we need is to have them get to smart to where they will kill us

1. It's hard to choose. From recent offerings, I'd say Overlord (novel series but is probably better known as an anime). The concept of being sucked into a gaming world or something similar is a fascinatingly diverse area of fantasy-science fiction cross over.

2. Heh... cybernetic body. Getting old is a bitch.

3. Yeah, but it may seem dated. Nuclear power/weapons. Power, because there is no indication at all that anyone is doing anything serious about dealing with it's waste and weapons because... yeah, that's a bit obvious.

it scares me how perverted freedom gets by IT and gene technology. it is not in our hands what job we get if we live in the wrong city quarter, due to geoscoring and our neighbours who pay or pay not their bills instantly. your affinity for sensitive topics like depression ar surveillance is tracked and monitored, your movement profile is there because of your smartphone. your taste profile when buying in supermarkets.
algorithms judge about initial qualifying examination for studying. It is not in our hands who judge about us, not our friends do so on their own and it is not in our hands who judge about our life path, not even third humans outside of our friendship circles, but instead algorithms.

then there is gene technologies that try desperately to avoid diseases and deficites. design kids will ask unoptimized kids why their parents did not spend money on prenatale analysis, gene-scissors like CRSIPR-CAS9. genetic disease are of possibility to happen, but also possibly not. what to do with knowledge you are an accident waiting to happen? insurances want that, but what about you? nobody wants to know!

both fields try to get rid of any mistake, even deficites in a saddening despaired manner.

we are higher animals, no machines, but we try to get there, where is no place for us.

intresting i can say many things. as for the questions I will answer them.

1. lycan infection, accual flesh and blood beings etc to many to list.

2. if one would have to do it like myself I would use it to try and improve America first then the world once it is proven to be both stable and acceptable to do it ways to improve one's health so they can live long full lives with out worry of infection or dessease would be a start and allow people to die on there own terms at there own convince is what I seek.

3. if anything any kind of science that has protentual to take away what it means to be human and to rebell against the laws of god and the traditions of the jewish and christain faiths would be a bridge to far for there are things that faith must tell science to in the words of one cardnel or so form one of the movies (successor to the davinchi code.) and to sum it up. "faith must tell science to pause to wait for there are things out there that it can not explain and define but can only be explained as the raw power of the lord and the raw power of faith." anything that tries to defy faith and the lord like trying to bring the dead back to life by unnatural means and means not approved by the lord is the bridge to far. for the laws of god must be used to determin where science can go and where it can not go and to punish those who do take it to that point for it must be destroyed for the good of humanity and of the lord.

An interesting content. Reading this gave me new ideas. But for my answers:

1. Werewolfs. I like their animal nature and instincts. As for science fictions: Prey (game), Mass Effect series and RoboCop.

2. For this answer, no, I'd NEVER improve my life quality with science nor technology! I'm already afraid about utopias for future generations of cyborgs and genetic improved humans. And also, IF I am improved version of past-human, what about everybody else? If I life longer than real humans, I would outlive everybody who I care about. Can YOU be happy with such a gift, or curse?

3. Skynet and Terminators itself from Terminator trilogy, Everything about Umbrella company from Resident Evil series, RoboCop, Neuromods from Prey game(s), Forced Evolutionary Virus from Fallout series etc. I could list more stuff, but you understand my point: everything unethical and way too advanced technology (improvements) for our understanding. They worries me because they draws away from their humanity and what worries me more: maybe one day they draws US from OUR humanity.

For TV shows, I don't have a favorite of this genre, although I used to tune into Supernatural. For games, it's the Resident Evil Series. For books, it used to be Goosebumps, however, I am now reading a novel aptly called 'Haunted'.

1 - My favorite science fiction and also my huge source of inspiration is Howard Phillips Lovecraft. All of his works are great in their own ways, but there are a few which "stand out" from the collection, such as Hypnos, Celephais and  Beyond the Wall of Sleep. These works take the reader to a higher level of knowledge and I could say existence, that is if the reader is open minded and has interest in should I say Hermeticism, Astrology and Astral Projection.

2 - Technology no, but science, well considering the fact that science evolved from alchemy, I would consider using it. And yes, I would do it regardless of the consequences, because if you do not harm others with it, you will not be "punished".

3 - Yes, the killing of animals. If one is capable of killing an animal for an experiment or project, why isn't he capable of resurrecting it as well?
