Science Fiction in Horror and Fantasy

Author: eawood Header artwork by: vladmrk

When one thinks of creatures that lurk in the realms of horror and fantasy, an often overlooked detail is how science influences their creation and how action and adventure bring their narrative to life.

Take the case of the Mummy, an age-old concept of fear of the dead coming back to life. To the ancient Egyptians, mummification itself was a form of science rooted in their religious beliefs. While Universal put a fantastical new spin on this iteration seen in 2017’s the Mummy, it still kept true to the roots that scared theater goers of yesteryear—the walking dead powered by mysticism. But however powerful this mysticism, it gained control of biological science to reanimate this corpse and bring the Mummy back to life. Every creature, monster or character from the shadows of a nightmare can find its origin in the annals of Dark Science.

Artwork by: lancerdrake

Take a look behind the scenes on how The Mummy blended mysticism and science fiction in the creation of Dr. Jekyll’s lab - The Prodigium.

Dr. Frankenstein's lab in Mary Shelley's 1819 novel was the birthplace of a new kind of science. In the book Mary Shelley uses Frankenstein's experiment as a way to explore the limitations of scientific progress, and to ask questions about the ethics of it.

Mad Scientist thegryph

Specifically, can science resurrect the dead, and more to the point, should it? Generations of storytellers after Shelley would incorporate examples of science being used to dark, foreboding ends. Not least among them was the Robert Louis Stevenson character Dr. Jekyll, and his famously destructive alter-ego, Mr. Hyde.

Dr. Jekyll's lab, housed in London's Museum of Natural History, also serves as a headquarters for a secret group dedicated to finding and neutralizing evil. It is called The Prodigium. In The Mummy, Dr. Jekyll has been transformed from merely being a scientist with a dark secret to an academic who specializes in evil "Mary Shelley... explore the limitations of scientific progress, and to ask questions about the ethics of it." and spends his life working to hunt it down. The Prodigium is the venue where Jekyll conducts his studies and stores artifacts. Having access to the resources of the museum allows him to perform in-depth research. Among the many curiosities seen inside the lab you'll find the skull of Dracula as well as The Creature From the Black Lagoon's arm.

Studying such auspicious and dangerous creatures is far from what constitutes a routine scientific endeavor. Just like Dr. Frankenstein flipping the switch and electrifying his cadaver back to life, this is a different kind of science with its own set of dark consequences. Dark science is what happens when science goes too far. For Dr. Frankenstein, it meant inadvertently creating a monster. For historical characters in fiction like Dr. Faust, it meant making a deal with the devil in order to discern the secrets of the universe. The Prodigium ultimately may have a noble goal driving it, but that doesn't mean that it's safe, or that unintended consequences can't spring out of it.

Creature from the black lagoon ogilvie

The idea of dark science originates from exploring the connection between scientific progress and the potential for danger. By trying to break the barrier between life and death, Dr. Frankenstein creates a monster. In looking for evidence of a long-lost species, the scientists in The Creature From the Black Lagoon incur the wrath of a mysterious menace. In Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea men use new technology to explore new depths and get more than they bargained for. In The War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells, a super advanced civilization from Mars attacks earth with metal walkers equipped with hi-tech weapons. Science has long provided a foundation for tales of monsters, evil forces, and other mortal perils. When Mary Shelley sat down to write Frankenstein, one of the ideological "Dark science originates from exploring the connection between scientific progress and the potential for danger."questions she wrestled with was the idea that although progress in society followed from knowledge—like diseases being cured, or transportation improving—there was no inherently good guiding principle underpinning that progress. In other words, technological advances could be used for evil just as easily as they could be used for good. That truth opened up all kinds of possibilities, especially for storytellers looking to tell harrowing tales. Many of the most recognizable horror stories and thriller titles of all time—Frankenstein, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, War of the Worlds, and The Creature From the Black Lagoon among them—deal with man's pursuit of knowledge leading to terrifying outcomes, or show how technological progress can have deadly consequences.

Although Mary Shelley, Jules Verne, and H.G. Wells are considered among the founding authors of science fiction, the genre didn't exist as we know it when these writers were alive. These authors laid the groundwork for later science fiction storytellers, and they also founded a long trend of combining speculative, fictional science with Horror or Gothic storytelling. The common element that stories traversing these two genres almost always shared? Action, and plenty of it. It's only natural for conflict to arrive when weaponized machines start taking over cities, or when re-animated corpses begin terrorizing the living, but heroism and action-packed adventures also provided a solid underpinning for these kinds of stories, which manage to explore profound questions about society and progress while still providing a thoroughly entertaining experience. "It's only natural for conflict to arrive when weaponized machines start taking over cities"Dr. Jekyll is perhaps the perfect embodiment of this kind of blending. His work requires putting himself in harm's way, but it also requires the strong mental faculties of science. And the fact that he has a violent alter-ego ensures that chaos and action will follow wherever he goes. Dr. Jekyll's future path of horror, science fiction, and action will definitely be worth keeping an eye on.

1. The Fly

2. I'd master interdimensional travel to connect any two or more points in the multiverse, and I'd create an interdimensional quantum flux cellular matrix that reacts by changing shape, density, and volume according to my neuronal activity. Said matrix should allow me to apply forces to myself or to objects at a distance with high magnitude. Parts of the matrix within my body should be able to preserve my DNA in some form or another while others reduce pain response; increase tissue durability; increase extracellular signaling; increase blood coagulation upon exposure to air; and work to replicate matrix cells.

3. I regard science itself as neutral (being neither good or bad), and that only bad intentions and malpractice can lead to anything truly capable of scaring me. Thus, I can only be afraid of what harm can be done 'WITH' the results and not 'OF' the results of scientific achievements. Though I suppose that's the point. Anyways, there are two things I would potentially be afraid of. Whatever nonsense that would result from "2.", and biosafety level 4 containment failure. There's nothing quite like watching yourself and all your loved ones slowly melt away (sometimes literally; as all their bodily fluids leak out from every orifice of their body).

  • What is your favorite example of a science fiction influence in a horror or fantasy story (movies, TV, books, comics, etc.)?
Hm, it'll have to be something to do with controlling forces/elements, controlling things even we as a developed race aren't aware of, things that are beyond our limits, beyond our grasp, fiction that just sorta fucks with your head for a while.
  • If you could create or manipulate science/technology to better your life, what would you do, and would you do it regardless of the consequences?
To control life, death and energy itself. Although I personally wouldn't use the power for evil, it would be strong and wouldn't be good in the wrong hands. I'll use it to extend my time with loved ones, to make their suffering as short as possible, to make it possible to see things and do things we aren't supposed to do (flying, breathing underwater, read minds, etc).
  • Is there an example of a potential misuse of science that scares you?
The LHC experiment, at the 'Large Hadron Collider' scientists are smashing atoms together in the hopes of better understanding the world we live in and the universe around it. these could cause astronomical issues for the earth, such as creating a super-massive black hole which could engulf the earth and everything around it."

Science Fiction influence in Horror story,   My Favorite is "Event Horizon" (1997). Here, a device is used to unlock another dimension, In this case, unfortunately it turns out to be the door to Hell.
High on the list would be, The Mist. (2007). Here the Military is responsible for dealing into alternate dimensions, at the cost of the Citizens of a small nearby town.
Then there is, The Fly, experiments with molecular transport, that went horribly wrong.
Recently seen in several Science Fiction movies, An idea all would like to come into reality,  The "Fix you"  Machine. Was seen in Passengers,  Elysium, and Prometheus.

1) Bloodborne! Blood ministration and all the horrors it caused...
2) Something to have long (maybe eternal) life or ultimate immunity. Also, something to make you fly (like, implanting wings, creating magnet fields...) or breathe under water - things to broaden person experience. Or maybe something to connect minds with other person, to communicate at different level.
I would probably think before using it, or, better, wait a couple of years to see if first people to try it develop side effects
3) All sorts of mind control/reading and other manipulations, that could be possible when developing brain implants. Our mind has always been a private area, I don't know what will become of us, if that's no longer true.... I guess that's a contradiction to my previous statement But, I'd want to have something to communicate actively, as long as both people choose to keep connected. And with no security holes. Impossible, yes

What is your favorite example of a science fiction influence in a horror or fantasy story (movies, TV, books, comics, etc.)?
 - To me it is hybridization, such as in Alien, when we discover failed  replicas of Ripley.
Or, in Chris Walas' The fly 2, when the man at the end of the movie is mixed with the upcoming creature of Jeff Goldblum in the teleportation machine and has become a monstruous... thing!

If you could create or manipulate science/technology to better your life, what would you do, and would you do it regardless of the consequences?
 - I would master hybrid and genetics mutations until the human body's perfection.

Is there an example of a potential misuse of science that scares you?
 - I can't tell more, the militaries have taken all my files and left me somewhere in an unknown desert...

3) Personally, what really scares me are nuclear weapons. Another thing that scares me for a different reason is development of fully autonomous mobile weapon platforms. removing the human element from pulling the trigger is what I see as a huge problem there. a machine has no conscience, a machine can't be held responsible, but it can be terrifyingly efficient in killing people.

  • What is your favorite example of a science fiction influence in a horror or fantasy story (movies, TV, books, comics, etc.)? The Strain and Sleepy Hollow are the best examples for this. In Strain, there's both horror/science and mythology to this where everything has changed for the vampire mythology that was given a real twist on how they would look like. In Sleepy Hollow, Ichabod Crane tries his inventions out on how the Headless Horseman is decapitating people from a self heated blade. I like also to add in Blade II with the Reapers are genetically enhanced to repel sunlight (which failed by the way) silver, and garlic.
  • If you could create or manipulate science/technology to better your life, what would you do, and would you do it regardless of the consequences? I would try to make a genetic hybrid species of a human and some type of animal, creature, or an alien of course. My ideas would have to be tested first to see if it would work out for me .
  • Is there an example of a potential misuse of science that scares you? When your creation is trying to kill you first or your whole family. It's usually that the creator gets it first or last in the story line .                                                                     Besides thank you for letting me doing this here !

1. My favorite example of science fiction in a horror has to be Hellraiser 4 - Bloodline. It's the one where they make a giant Lament Configuration Cube in outer space and destroy Pinhead. It's set in the past first to show the creator of the box, and then goes to the far future where things get very scifi. It's actually my favorite Hellraiser movie.

2. If I could create technology to better my life it would definitely be the Star Trek Replicator. I thought that machine was so awesome. Imagine being able to order your favorite foods or drinks 24 hours a day, 7 days a week! Always loved that concept, would have to go to the gym a lot more though. lol

3. I am slightly afraid of cloning. What happens if you clone someone? Do they have rights? Are they the same person? Do they share the same soul? Way too many unanswerable questions.
