Take the case of the Mummy, an age-old concept of fear of the dead coming back to life. To the ancient Egyptians, mummification itself was a form of science rooted in their religious beliefs. While Universal put a fantastical new spin on this iteration seen in 2017’s the Mummy, it still kept true to the roots that scared theater goers of yesteryear—the walking dead powered by mysticism. But however powerful this mysticism, it gained control of biological science to reanimate this corpse and bring the Mummy back to life. Every creature, monster or character from the shadows of a nightmare can find its origin in the annals of Dark Science. Artwork by: lancerdrake Take a look behind the scenes on how The Mummy blended mysticism and science fiction in the creation of Dr. Jekyll’s lab - The Prodigium. Dr. Frankenstein's lab in Mary Shelley's 1819 novel was the birthplace of a new kind of science. In the book Mary Shelley uses Frankenstein's experiment as a way to explore the limitations of scientific progress, and to ask questions about the ethics of it. Specifically, can science resurrect the dead, and more to the point, should it? Generations of storytellers after Shelley would incorporate examples of science being used to dark, foreboding ends. Not least among them was the Robert Louis Stevenson character Dr. Jekyll, and his famously destructive alter-ego, Mr. Hyde. Dr. Jekyll's lab, housed in London's Museum of Natural History, also serves as a headquarters for a secret group dedicated to finding and neutralizing evil. It is called The Prodigium. In The Mummy, Dr. Jekyll has been transformed from merely being a scientist with a dark secret to an academic who specializes in evil "Mary Shelley... explore the limitations of scientific progress, and to ask questions about the ethics of it." and spends his life working to hunt it down. The Prodigium is the venue where Jekyll conducts his studies and stores artifacts. Having access to the resources of the museum allows him to perform in-depth research. Among the many curiosities seen inside the lab you'll find the skull of Dracula as well as The Creature From the Black Lagoon's arm. Studying such auspicious and dangerous creatures is far from what constitutes a routine scientific endeavor. Just like Dr. Frankenstein flipping the switch and electrifying his cadaver back to life, this is a different kind of science with its own set of dark consequences. Dark science is what happens when science goes too far. For Dr. Frankenstein, it meant inadvertently creating a monster. For historical characters in fiction like Dr. Faust, it meant making a deal with the devil in order to discern the secrets of the universe. The Prodigium ultimately may have a noble goal driving it, but that doesn't mean that it's safe, or that unintended consequences can't spring out of it. Wells, a super advanced civilization from Mars attacks earth with metal walkers equipped with hi-tech weapons. Science has long provided a foundation for tales of monsters, evil forces, and other mortal perils. When Mary Shelley sat down to write Frankenstein, one of the ideological "Dark science originates from exploring the connection between scientific progress and the potential for danger."questions she wrestled with was the idea that although progress in society followed from knowledge—like diseases being cured, or transportation improving—there was no inherently good guiding principle underpinning that progress. In other words, technological advances could be used for evil just as easily as they could be used for good. Wells are considered among the founding authors of science fiction, the genre didn't exist as we know it when these writers were alive. These authors laid the groundwork for later science fiction storytellers, and they also founded a long trend of combining speculative, fictional science with Horror or Gothic storytelling. The common element that stories traversing these two genres almost always shared? Action, and plenty of it. It's only natural for conflict to arrive when weaponized machines start taking over cities, or when re-animated corpses begin terrorizing the living, but heroism and action-packed adventures also provided a solid underpinning for these kinds of stories, which manage to explore profound questions about society and progress while still providing a thoroughly entertaining experience. Interestingly I had to do an assignment on character creation for my degree a little over a month ago. I made 5 characters, each according to a theme or genre. Two were of the horror or thriller type.
1) the rate at which humanity is becoming more and more dependent on technology is exciting as scary.
Old movies such as I Robot, AI, Ghost in a shell and more are all examples of technological fears.
2) since technology has it advantages in the artworld, I plan on using it as part of my future work. Many experiments can be done and more art can be made with less paper wasted or space used aside from digital storage. My goal in life is bringing my imagination to reality. not to overtake or block out one another but to find a connection to help bring both into balance.
3) technology is becoming more and more of a powerful resource, tool and mind set. The idea of contacting anyone without seeing them in person changes how one perceives relationships. That can might as well be the tip of the ice berg.

1. I couldn't pick any one single favorite. I like various examples because they're varied.
2. I like to imagine getting bionic eyes that could cycle through various modes: nightvision, thermal, x-ray, zoom/microscopic, recording, etc. I think of this quite a bit because I have an eye condition that eliminates me as a candidate for laser surgery. My doctor told me that basically the only way to permanently correct my vision would be a cornea transplant, for which I'm not a candidate either because A) I can still see B) I can wear glasses or hard contacts. I told him that if that's the case, let's just scoop mine out and give me bionic eyes instead.
Hmm...consequences/side effects....perhaps my bionic eyes would look strange - maybe like silver orbs with odd pupils - and people would stare or be afraid. Maybe the mechanics of the eyes meant I couldn't blink, sleep, or cry because I wouldn't have need of eyelids and tear ducts anymore. The only way for me to sleep might be that I'd have to "power down" the eyes for a set amount of time, or that the eyes ran on some kind of battery and would have to recharge - effectively rendering me blind for periods. Maybe I'd get them through some sort of agency grant, but their terms are that they can download and view anything my eyes see - essentially meaning they're not just my eyes.
Would I still do it? Yeah, probably.
3. Science scares the hell out of me because it is a tool and/or a weapon, depending entirely on who wields it! It gives us nanotechnology to combat diseases, restores paralyzed or missing limbs, it has allowed us to map the genome and track genetic markers for specific afflictions. Using science for warfare has reduced the number of battlefield casualties because it has increased the range of weapons and removed armies of humans from hacking away at each other with swords and axes. But it has also given us ridiculously effective means of killing people: tanks, gasses, smart bombs, A-bombs, H-bombs, etc. What worries me is who is using it for what ends. What if someone homophobic identified a "gay gene" and eliminated it? What if it were made illegal to carry a fetus that has been identified to have Down Syndrome or some other handicap? What if infertility issues could be solved, allowing parents to have a child, but the child isn't theirs or maybe not even its own person - perhaps the terms of the pregnancy are that the child belongs to the government/doctors and they can reclaim it at a given age to use for whatever they want. Having an imagination is terrifying sometimes because I can imagine things that I would never want to see happen, but by that same rationale there are people with way more twisted imaginations that might have zero qualms about doing horrendous things simply because they can harness the science to make it happen.

Your fears are already a reality. The creator of the atomic bomb, the ex-Nazi, Herr Dr. Oppenheimer, upon seeing it detonated said 'I have become a destroyer of worlds' and went on to perfect it even more. This weekend a lunatic in N. Korea exploded a hydrogen bomb MANY times more powerful than the one detonated over Japan in WWII. When one monster invents something monstrous there are always people who can't wait to make it more monstrous.
This is also true of good imaginings. The Star Trek communicator is now a reality in the form of cell phones. Jules Verne's submarine. Robots and computers.
As artists we have the unique ability to visualize the good and bad, the beautiful and ugly, reality and imagination. To leave a record of the workings of the human mind. Frightening? Perhaps. Exhilarating? Definitely.

1. Zombies. Attempts by science to make people immortal, create a bioweapon, or cure some ailment ultimately resulting in undead hordes. One of my favorite sci-fi horror reads was the book World War Z.
2. Portals...Portals everywhere.
3. Cyborg technology and the implanting of chips and such in our bodies. It's not misused and in fact, it can be very beneficial to disabled people. It's just the concept of perfectly fit and healthy people sticking stuff under their skin that scares me.

1. Definitely a Twilight Zone episode called 'To Serve Man'. An alien race comes to earth, rids it of hunger/disease/war. Offers rides to earthlings, book left behind, translated, man runs to space ship as the door shuts on his 'tourist' girlfriend, banging on window he yells, 'it's a cookbook!'
2. I would like to create a universal cure for all pain. Can't see how that could be misused.

1: It's not my favourite, but the last podcast I listened too was 'The Horror', who played an episode from the radio show 'Lights Out' called 'Death Robbery. It featured Boris Karloff as a scientist who resurrects his recently deceased wife with terrible consequences. The final minutes reminded me of the scene in the Evil Dead movie, when Ash has to fight his possessed girlfriend.

1: I've always found that bringing lost species back into existence was quite fascinating, there are a couple of examples of this that I can note: One, Jurassic world where they not only brought dinosaurs back into existence but they created the Awesome Indominus, a vicious hybrid created from the D.N.A of Dinosaurs spliced with the D.N.A of animal species that live in this day and age. And Two: In Transformers Prime, Shockwave brought the Predacons back into existence. Another thing that fascinates me is cybernetics and how it can be applied to the human body as replacements for lost organs and limbs much like Robocop.
2: To clone fully functioning organs or create cybernetic quality and affordable replacements for lost limbs would be great, then people don't have to wait for donors.
3: Genetic manipulation though brilliant can be detrimental to the environment not to mention the moral implications of cloning sentient beings or messing with their genome to create a certain look. Some things are just better left untouched.
