Science Fiction in Horror and Fantasy

Author: eawood Header artwork by: vladmrk

When one thinks of creatures that lurk in the realms of horror and fantasy, an often overlooked detail is how science influences their creation and how action and adventure bring their narrative to life.

Take the case of the Mummy, an age-old concept of fear of the dead coming back to life. To the ancient Egyptians, mummification itself was a form of science rooted in their religious beliefs. While Universal put a fantastical new spin on this iteration seen in 2017’s the Mummy, it still kept true to the roots that scared theater goers of yesteryear—the walking dead powered by mysticism. But however powerful this mysticism, it gained control of biological science to reanimate this corpse and bring the Mummy back to life. Every creature, monster or character from the shadows of a nightmare can find its origin in the annals of Dark Science.

Artwork by: lancerdrake

Take a look behind the scenes on how The Mummy blended mysticism and science fiction in the creation of Dr. Jekyll’s lab - The Prodigium.

Dr. Frankenstein's lab in Mary Shelley's 1819 novel was the birthplace of a new kind of science. In the book Mary Shelley uses Frankenstein's experiment as a way to explore the limitations of scientific progress, and to ask questions about the ethics of it.

Mad Scientist thegryph

Specifically, can science resurrect the dead, and more to the point, should it? Generations of storytellers after Shelley would incorporate examples of science being used to dark, foreboding ends. Not least among them was the Robert Louis Stevenson character Dr. Jekyll, and his famously destructive alter-ego, Mr. Hyde.

Dr. Jekyll's lab, housed in London's Museum of Natural History, also serves as a headquarters for a secret group dedicated to finding and neutralizing evil. It is called The Prodigium. In The Mummy, Dr. Jekyll has been transformed from merely being a scientist with a dark secret to an academic who specializes in evil "Mary Shelley... explore the limitations of scientific progress, and to ask questions about the ethics of it." and spends his life working to hunt it down. The Prodigium is the venue where Jekyll conducts his studies and stores artifacts. Having access to the resources of the museum allows him to perform in-depth research. Among the many curiosities seen inside the lab you'll find the skull of Dracula as well as The Creature From the Black Lagoon's arm.

Studying such auspicious and dangerous creatures is far from what constitutes a routine scientific endeavor. Just like Dr. Frankenstein flipping the switch and electrifying his cadaver back to life, this is a different kind of science with its own set of dark consequences. Dark science is what happens when science goes too far. For Dr. Frankenstein, it meant inadvertently creating a monster. For historical characters in fiction like Dr. Faust, it meant making a deal with the devil in order to discern the secrets of the universe. The Prodigium ultimately may have a noble goal driving it, but that doesn't mean that it's safe, or that unintended consequences can't spring out of it.

Creature from the black lagoon ogilvie

The idea of dark science originates from exploring the connection between scientific progress and the potential for danger. By trying to break the barrier between life and death, Dr. Frankenstein creates a monster. In looking for evidence of a long-lost species, the scientists in The Creature From the Black Lagoon incur the wrath of a mysterious menace. In Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea men use new technology to explore new depths and get more than they bargained for. In The War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells, a super advanced civilization from Mars attacks earth with metal walkers equipped with hi-tech weapons. Science has long provided a foundation for tales of monsters, evil forces, and other mortal perils. When Mary Shelley sat down to write Frankenstein, one of the ideological "Dark science originates from exploring the connection between scientific progress and the potential for danger."questions she wrestled with was the idea that although progress in society followed from knowledge—like diseases being cured, or transportation improving—there was no inherently good guiding principle underpinning that progress. In other words, technological advances could be used for evil just as easily as they could be used for good. That truth opened up all kinds of possibilities, especially for storytellers looking to tell harrowing tales. Many of the most recognizable horror stories and thriller titles of all time—Frankenstein, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, War of the Worlds, and The Creature From the Black Lagoon among them—deal with man's pursuit of knowledge leading to terrifying outcomes, or show how technological progress can have deadly consequences.

Although Mary Shelley, Jules Verne, and H.G. Wells are considered among the founding authors of science fiction, the genre didn't exist as we know it when these writers were alive. These authors laid the groundwork for later science fiction storytellers, and they also founded a long trend of combining speculative, fictional science with Horror or Gothic storytelling. The common element that stories traversing these two genres almost always shared? Action, and plenty of it. It's only natural for conflict to arrive when weaponized machines start taking over cities, or when re-animated corpses begin terrorizing the living, but heroism and action-packed adventures also provided a solid underpinning for these kinds of stories, which manage to explore profound questions about society and progress while still providing a thoroughly entertaining experience. "It's only natural for conflict to arrive when weaponized machines start taking over cities"Dr. Jekyll is perhaps the perfect embodiment of this kind of blending. His work requires putting himself in harm's way, but it also requires the strong mental faculties of science. And the fact that he has a violent alter-ego ensures that chaos and action will follow wherever he goes. Dr. Jekyll's future path of horror, science fiction, and action will definitely be worth keeping an eye on.

1. I can't think of a particular favorite at the moment, but one example that comes to
mind that I thought was interesting was the Incredible Hulk.

2. Create a Stargate and take a long vacation from reality and come back as though I
had only been gone for a second.

"Where have you been?"

Me: "Oh...here and there..."    XD
It would be fun to live out a favorite story book or a video game or even mingle with
favorite fictional characters and even literally explore the world of your own creation.
Kind of like how we do mentally when we view art works or experience our favorite movies.
The only possible consequence is that some of us may never want to come back to reality.
And frankly, who could blame anyone? The way things have been going on in this world...
man...still, we can take with us what we got out of the other worldly experience and resolve
matters with practical applications from our metaphors.

3. Bar codes, and micro chip implantations to keep track of people's where abouts, thoughts
and actions. Or anything that reminded me of "Big Brother is Watching"

Oh yeah! I remembered that book! 1984! Yeah that was an eye opener. I meant to
mention that for question 1 also.
The scary thing about that book is that we're really not that far from it becoming a potential
reality.

1 - What is your favorite example of a science fiction influence in a horror or fantasy story (movies, TV, books, comics, etc.)?

In terms of film, Alien (1979), The Thing (1982) and The Fly (1986) cannot be topped. As far as literature, nothing'll ever beat Frankenstein.

2 - If you could create or manipulate science/technology to better your life, what would you do, and would you do it regardless of the consequences?

Probably guarantee permanent good health. Not immortality, but not having to worry about illness. I don't see what kind of consequences it'd have, honestly.

3 - Is there an example of a potential misuse of science that scares you?

Science is becoming its own religion in a way, and it's controlled by men who have gotten it wrong before. While the unending pursuit of knowledge leads to some great discoveries and new solutions, it has become too politically-driven as of late. Celebrity Scientists are pathetic, and they often don't use their influence in a positive manner. It's not so much scary as it is disappointing.

Another point; the Atomic Bomb was a misuse of science... it's because of that misuse that these horrific weapons exist and add ego & power to already overcompensating military forces.

While I agree with the idea of setting limitations for AI;

I don't think the point of HAL was to be portrayed as an evil AI or a villain. Though HAL says that it is incapable of error, humans are responsible for it and it's therefore capable of error; that simple. HAL's malfunctions (brought on by human error) are what led the crew to their demise, not out of some evil motive.

1. It is very difficult for me to pick just one story, but I can always pick a trope that commonly springs up in many works of art. I'd have to say my favorite trope would be the monster itself, in the case of werewolves or Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. I adore the concept of exploring a body or consciousness that is separate from your own, or separate from whichever is your "main" consciousness. All my life I've had at least a clue as to the perspective of animals ( Example: My cat likely sees me as a towering giant, and yet she has learned to not fear towering giants, it seems. ), but I know what I imagine could never compare to simply BEING those animals. Watching the world go by through the eyes of a cat as I rest in the sun, smelling fear as a wolf whilst I track prey, hearing the world around me and navigating through it as a bat in the dead of night. Make that animal even more than an animal -- an intelligent creature we could define as the "monster" -- and my interest only grows.

2. I would probably use science and/or technology to do things I could never do. Give myself powers, like those expressed by Dracula or the shape shifting exhibited by Loki in Norse mythology, and become something that is more than a mere human. Though I'd normally be wise and avoid such gifts if they really WERE offered, knowing something bad would certainly happen, there's always a fair chance I'd take these powers anyway because I know I'd be kept up at night by the possibilities that would run through my head.

3. Honestly? ...The only misuse of science I could be scared by is if they found out the meaning of life. I am an absurdist, someone who believes life is meaningless and that mankind's quest to find meaning in religion or similar concepts is...well, absurd, hence the name. And I'm actually happy knowing that I don't matter in the grand scheme of things. I could die today and be a nobody, or I could die as the friggin' president years from now, and life would go on just fine without me. The universe is indifferent to me and my endeavors, and I'm actually happy with that, because at least I don't have to spend my days worrying about the meaning of life in the first place, since there is no meaning to be found. BUT, if there WAS a meaning and science HAPPENED to find out that there IS meaning? ...I don't know how I'd take that. I mean, I'm comfortable, so let me be comfortable and/or ignorant. Chances are the meaning isn't that pleasant anyway, nor would it affect me and make me a god or anything.

...So...there's my feedback

1. 'Man Who Fell to Earth' staring David Bowie as an alien that comes to earth in search of water to save his planet. I think the cautionary tale is especially relevant now that the Canadians want to bury nuclear waste within a half mile of 20% of the worlds fresh water and Trump director of EPA think he is head of the Extract Petroleum Anywhere commission.

2. Yes, I would use science/technology to wash dishes or clothing, heat or cool my home, travel unnecessarily long distance to just to eat dinner and have a beer regardless of the consequences of my 'I've got to have mine / I've got mine' attitude.

3. North Korean and Donald Trump

At first: Thank you so much for this journal! As an pharmacist interested in arts I have to say the possibilities and borders of science have fascinated me since my childhood.

1.) It sounds cliché, but Frankenstein always was one of my favourites. Especially the different interpretations of this work are worth a study. This piece of literature has so many different aspects, that it seems impossible to point up each of them in one adaption. And it's pretty cool, that Mary Shelley invented the genre Science fiction.
And one entire show is a big ball of timey wimey science stuff - Doctor Who. A whole universe of more or less intelligible Theories. Of the bad and the good guys.
And last but not least - it speaks volumes, that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's most popular hero is inspired by his professor for medicine.

2.) I would try to invent a device (maybe a helmet) that shows you the view (and other senses/feelings) of another person.
This could be incredibly useful to understand people with autism, anxiety, depression or Alzheimer's desease.
But there have to be a safe mechanism to prevent the display of one's view who doesn't want it.

3.) The most intense moment of "woooow" and "what the fuck" at the same time I had when an old man showed me his artificial heart. No pulse, no heart and when the battery fails this poor living dead would die for real instantly. The doctor's told him, that he would survive probably up to 3 months. And now he's in his fifth year after this operation. He takes every day as it is and makes the best out of it - and he left me speechless more than one time.
But in the aspect of possible misuse of science there DBS (deep brain stimulation) that freaks me out. Little electrodes are implanted into the brain to send little electric shocks to the patient. It was designed as a possible cure for epilepsy - but it's also possible to "shock" someone instantly happy. Creepy as fuck. Especially if you imagine how this technique could develop.....

I would also like to have some sort of teleportation or "jumping" device for finding hospitable planets. I would make these regardless because the medical beds are needed today, the youth beds would be a great source of pleasure for many & income for those manufacturing the beds, & the jumping is a possible necessity in the future that many would frown on but see the need for sooner or later.

3) Cloning, & making AI's more independent.

LOVE THE TERRIFIC ARTWORK in The Mummy, but reviews of plot, dialogue, & actors have not been as enthusiastic[understatement].

Favorite Movie- ALIEN SERIES [1& 2, Prometheus] & TERMINATOR.

I suppose that I feel that science/technology could be best used to further brain function research & technology in a search for remedies for conditions such as TBI, mental illness, stroke damage, motor dysfunctions, dementia, & Alzheimer's disease. As to the consequences of such a focus; I cannot see a down-side or any quick easy way to weaponize the results of such a study which is probably the reason that it wouldn't ever be done. Our greed-driven society is very much about PROFIT over PEOPLE.

Because humans have displayed such a  blatant disregard for each other & all other life forms that we share this planet with; I do think that the largest error would be in the future development of all science & technology related to furthering the reality of AI [Artificial Intelligence].  The Human Species, at this point of its' development is not equipped with the wisdom & spiritual enlightenment that such a project would demand.DOOMED!

The robot/science officer in Aliens is the scariest character because he looks completely human but isn't. He seems to have the same goal of survival as the rest of the crew but is really working for the company.
The highest and best use of science and technology is to cure disease.
The scariest use of science is the invention of the atom bomb and all nuclear weapons.

This is perfect! Thank you!! I'll reference this for most of my comic. It has a LOOOOOTT of Dark Science! Starting with the next page I believe. Is there an option to add artwork into the journal? After I finish the next page of the comic, I'm going to be doing some concept sketches for some of the darker characters and I thought they would be a good addition into this entry.
Thanks!

1) It would have to be Aliens.
2) Bring back the Dead to learn from their mistakes and yes since if it could help us in the long run.
3) Creating an implant that could control you is pretty scary.
