Science Fiction in Horror and Fantasy

Author: eawood Header artwork by: vladmrk

When one thinks of creatures that lurk in the realms of horror and fantasy, an often overlooked detail is how science influences their creation and how action and adventure bring their narrative to life.

Take the case of the Mummy, an age-old concept of fear of the dead coming back to life. To the ancient Egyptians, mummification itself was a form of science rooted in their religious beliefs. While Universal put a fantastical new spin on this iteration seen in 2017’s the Mummy, it still kept true to the roots that scared theater goers of yesteryear—the walking dead powered by mysticism. But however powerful this mysticism, it gained control of biological science to reanimate this corpse and bring the Mummy back to life. Every creature, monster or character from the shadows of a nightmare can find its origin in the annals of Dark Science.

Artwork by: lancerdrake

Take a look behind the scenes on how The Mummy blended mysticism and science fiction in the creation of Dr. Jekyll’s lab - The Prodigium.

Dr. Frankenstein's lab in Mary Shelley's 1819 novel was the birthplace of a new kind of science. In the book Mary Shelley uses Frankenstein's experiment as a way to explore the limitations of scientific progress, and to ask questions about the ethics of it.

Mad Scientist thegryph

Specifically, can science resurrect the dead, and more to the point, should it? Generations of storytellers after Shelley would incorporate examples of science being used to dark, foreboding ends. Not least among them was the Robert Louis Stevenson character Dr. Jekyll, and his famously destructive alter-ego, Mr. Hyde.

Dr. Jekyll's lab, housed in London's Museum of Natural History, also serves as a headquarters for a secret group dedicated to finding and neutralizing evil. It is called The Prodigium. In The Mummy, Dr. Jekyll has been transformed from merely being a scientist with a dark secret to an academic who specializes in evil "Mary Shelley... explore the limitations of scientific progress, and to ask questions about the ethics of it." and spends his life working to hunt it down. The Prodigium is the venue where Jekyll conducts his studies and stores artifacts. Having access to the resources of the museum allows him to perform in-depth research. Among the many curiosities seen inside the lab you'll find the skull of Dracula as well as The Creature From the Black Lagoon's arm.

Studying such auspicious and dangerous creatures is far from what constitutes a routine scientific endeavor. Just like Dr. Frankenstein flipping the switch and electrifying his cadaver back to life, this is a different kind of science with its own set of dark consequences. Dark science is what happens when science goes too far. For Dr. Frankenstein, it meant inadvertently creating a monster. For historical characters in fiction like Dr. Faust, it meant making a deal with the devil in order to discern the secrets of the universe. The Prodigium ultimately may have a noble goal driving it, but that doesn't mean that it's safe, or that unintended consequences can't spring out of it.

Creature from the black lagoon ogilvie

The idea of dark science originates from exploring the connection between scientific progress and the potential for danger. By trying to break the barrier between life and death, Dr. Frankenstein creates a monster. In looking for evidence of a long-lost species, the scientists in The Creature From the Black Lagoon incur the wrath of a mysterious menace. In Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea men use new technology to explore new depths and get more than they bargained for. In The War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells, a super advanced civilization from Mars attacks earth with metal walkers equipped with hi-tech weapons. Science has long provided a foundation for tales of monsters, evil forces, and other mortal perils. When Mary Shelley sat down to write Frankenstein, one of the ideological "Dark science originates from exploring the connection between scientific progress and the potential for danger."questions she wrestled with was the idea that although progress in society followed from knowledge—like diseases being cured, or transportation improving—there was no inherently good guiding principle underpinning that progress. In other words, technological advances could be used for evil just as easily as they could be used for good. That truth opened up all kinds of possibilities, especially for storytellers looking to tell harrowing tales. Many of the most recognizable horror stories and thriller titles of all time—Frankenstein, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, War of the Worlds, and The Creature From the Black Lagoon among them—deal with man's pursuit of knowledge leading to terrifying outcomes, or show how technological progress can have deadly consequences.

Although Mary Shelley, Jules Verne, and H.G. Wells are considered among the founding authors of science fiction, the genre didn't exist as we know it when these writers were alive. These authors laid the groundwork for later science fiction storytellers, and they also founded a long trend of combining speculative, fictional science with Horror or Gothic storytelling. The common element that stories traversing these two genres almost always shared? Action, and plenty of it. It's only natural for conflict to arrive when weaponized machines start taking over cities, or when re-animated corpses begin terrorizing the living, but heroism and action-packed adventures also provided a solid underpinning for these kinds of stories, which manage to explore profound questions about society and progress while still providing a thoroughly entertaining experience. "It's only natural for conflict to arrive when weaponized machines start taking over cities"Dr. Jekyll is perhaps the perfect embodiment of this kind of blending. His work requires putting himself in harm's way, but it also requires the strong mental faculties of science. And the fact that he has a violent alter-ego ensures that chaos and action will follow wherever he goes. Dr. Jekyll's future path of horror, science fiction, and action will definitely be worth keeping an eye on.

3. 1. While I had some issues with how fast it progressed, I enjoyed the terror of LIFE. The idea that we could bring back an alien species to earth, or that one could arrive on its own and just decimate our biosphere, that's frightening. I mean, look how much damage invasive species from other countries or regions cause. Fire ants, carp, earthworms!
2.Seeing as I'm currently suffering medical issues, I'd like some improvements in the health field, be it more on the holistic side or biotech or whatever. I just want to stop being sick!
3. Oh, there's this new thing I read about where a company put a microchip in empoyees hands. It's supposed to take the place of logins, keycards, fingerprint/retinal scans, the works. All I could think about as I read the article was The Barcode Tattoo series where something similar starts out innocently enough, then trends, then becomes the new standard, then govt enforced to the point of being illegal not to have one and your very life and status and every thing revolves around it. -Similar idea in a Black Mirror episode. (Black Mirror on Netflix does a terrifyingly fabulous job with dark science scenarios and social commentary.)

2. Nothing. The science today is already very marked. And there are already things that I do not like. Man should not play God.

3. Already there is a procedure that the three genetic scissors are called. This allows the human DNA to be cut and manipulated. I do not like that at all. I do not want to know what happens to our life and classes system when this process is enforced.

I came here to say that the Mummy had nothing to do with science fiction, but you made some good points.

  • Science fiction influence in non-sci-fi work? Some of Terry Pratchett's works are really interesting! I'd also say some of Sergej Lukianenko's books were supposed to be science fiction, but turned out to be science fantasy. Honorary mention: girlgeniuscomic I always like it if there's something sciency... but at a certain point, it's just science fiction.
  • Science can inform us, but when it comes to how far we want things to go, it ultimately comes down to value judgement. I'd love to make it easier for me to learn, but not at the cost of myself.
  • I'm sure that's a clever question, but I think you mean technology or other outcomes of science, because the scientific process as such cannot really be "misused". But yes, I am scared that people could have success with pseudoscience - even more than they do today - that they apply this rigorous method deliberately incompletely. That this becomes a new standard in medicine, for example.

    2. I would either give myself powers so that my life would not be average or I'd use it to get away from all of my problems.

    3. Playing God. There are some things science cannot do not can it explain.

People seem to have forgotten the true meaning of science in that it is supposed to be used to understand the world, not explain it.

    2. Even though medical technology has advanced so much, there's still room for improvement.

    3. Nuclear energy, artificial intelligence, exceptional surveillance of nearly every person on Earth...technology is both useful and terrifying. Because it has become so interwoven within our daily lives, the misuse of it would cause a lot of damage.

    Matthew 5:13-16New
    Salt and Light
    Jesus said:
“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.

    Jesus said:
“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.  Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

    Matthew 6:22-23

“The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light.  But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!

    Matthew 12:43-45

A Person Filled with Bad or Good
    Jesus said:
“When a demon is gone out of a man, it goes through dry places to find rest. It finds none.  Then it says, ‘I will go back into my house from which I came.’ When it goes back, it sees that it is empty. But it sees that the house has been cleaned and looks good. Then it goes out and comes back bringing with it seven demons more sinful than itself. They go in and live there. In the end that man is worse than at first. It will be like this with the sinful people of this day.”

    Matthew 25

The Parable of the Ten Virgins
    Jesus said:
“At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. 2 Five of them were foolish and five were wise. The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them.  The wise ones, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps.  The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep.

“At midnight the cry rang out: ‘Here’s the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’

“Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps. 8 The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.’

“‘No,’ they replied, ‘there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.’

“But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut.

“Later the others also came. ‘Lord, Lord,’ they said, ‘open the door for us!’

“But he replied, ‘Truly I tell you, I don’t know you.’

“Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.

The Parable of the Bags of Gold
    Jesus said:
“Again, it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his wealth to them. To one he gave five bags of gold, to another two bags, and to another one bag, each according to his ability. Then he went on his journey.  The man who had received five bags of gold went at once and put his money to work and gained five bags more. So also, the one with two bags of gold gained two more.  But the man who had received one bag went off, dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money.

“After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them.  The man who had received five bags of gold brought the other five. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with five bags of gold. See, I have gained five more.’

“His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’

“The man with two bags of gold also came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with two bags of gold; see, I have gained two more.’

“His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’

“Then the man who had received one bag of gold came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘I knew that you are a hard man, harvesting where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed. 25 So I was afraid and went out and hid your gold in the ground. See, here is what belongs to you.’

“His master replied, ‘You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed?  Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest.

“‘So take the bag of gold from him and give it to the one who has ten bags. 29 For whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them. 30 And throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

    The Sheep and the Goats
“When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.

“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in,  I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

“Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink?  When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

“Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.  For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink,  I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’

“They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’

“He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’

“Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”

I had always loved science fiction/ fantasy, and I do admit the dark element of it does make you think.

    1. I grew up with a lot of the time travel stories: i.e. Doctor Who, Quantum Leap, the movie version of the Time Machine. But I do also love the sci-fi of the space travels, and the action adventures, like Knight Rider, which wouldn't have worked without the Knight 2000, aka KITT. Tons of animes has these types of themes as well. But I also kept in mind the abuses of those technologies can bring. What if there wasn't a prime directive, or the hero being kindhearted like Doctor? That in itself was usually explored. The humanistic element.

    2. That's a tough one. Because I do see abuses in tech, like cell phones now. We do great things like talk to people on the other side of the planet, but forget to talk to the person next to us. I don't think that I have any comments in that regard right now.

3.Genetics Research,  because how far is too far when you can just make another person, or change what a person is like just my moving two genes around? I'd recommend watching A Certain Scientific Rail-gun for more than just the commentary of it. No spoilers though

OK, but I feel like that movie to some reviewers, this is what happens when you try to be a copycat to another franchise. (Fake cough) MARVEL.

    • What is your favorite example of a science fiction influence in a horror or fantasy story (movies, TV, books, comics, etc.)? Bram Stoker's Dracula, I guess.I'm not a big fun of science fiction stories.
    • If you could create or manipulate science/technology to better your life, what would you do, and would you do it regardless of the consequences? I would put humanity and nature first and use it with caution.
    • Is there an example of a potential misuse of science that scares you? Time travelling to change something very important that could possibly change everything we know today and compeletely change the timeline.

1: I love how the ideas of minds such as Poe and Lovecraft still can be found in modern day productions*. The theme of cosmic and interdimensional horror is to me the root of all horror. It confronts us with the idea of how massive our own universe is, how we as a species are utterly insignificant and powerless and how we are oblivious to the world beyond our own. These ideas make being scared of snakes, spiders or mice look silly.

2: I would invent/use interdimensional travel to find other worlds and civilisations and see if I can find resources to use for my own benefit here in our own realm... or bring one hundred thousand years of terror and suffering to our world, which ever comes first

3: I fear that we will lose our control over information technology and social media, and as a result, no longer will be able to decide what parts of it influence our daily lives and relationships with other people**.

*Reference to books and movies such as but not limited to: The Mist, Event Horizon, Stranger Things, The Thing.
** young fathers and mothers see the front of their phone more or just as often as the face of their child. This absolutely frightens me.

    1) I am highly influenced by the world of dark science, as I enjoy reading the most about it in the fantasy genre. I also love the movie "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" where different myths like Dr. Jackl and Mr. Hide, Dorian Grey, Nero and the Nautica and the Vampires come together. Also Van Helsing as a Demon Hunter supported by the Alchemistic Part of the Church is pretty good.

    2) Manipulating Human biology in terms of breathing under water would secure the world of the living of the next major catastrophy. This would probably mean than the humans will destroy another part of the world and there will be no place and nothing that is safe of us humans.

    3) In the past there were trys of cloning and homunculi. It would scare me if there were actually another me that would take over my life, my friends, my beloved. I couldn'd go up against me as the weaknesses and the strenghtes would be the same and we were equal...

1.My favorite Horror film is John Carpenter's the Thing. You can feel the isolation of the characters and like them you don't know who to trust. There are many small details hidden in the film that allow for multiple viewings. The design of the Creature truly makes it feel alien, and all the characters are intelligent.

2.I have always been a selfless person and so I would think of a way to extend life artificially or naturally.

3.The myths about the Hadron Collider where just that and it could not doom the world by creating a Black Hole but that concept alone to me is more horrifying than death by the hands of a monster

    1. I would not have a clear favourite but a 2013 film called "The Machine" by Caradog W. James stands out when I read the question which focuses on Artificial Intelligence, a subject which is debated in this current day over the effects it could have were a full scale AI to be created. There are many examples of AI whether in games or in movies and most, if not all, have some element of the AI going rogue.

    2. If I could manipulate science and technology I would likely create Artificial Intelligence. The effects could be catastrophic but I feel that in every instance of fiction when an AI fears it will be destroyed it will lash out at humanity to survive. I feel that if time is taken to develop the AI as a person, like EDI from "Mass Effect" game series or Machine from "The Machine" it will develop what we would see as a human attachment to the point that what is real and what is programmed has no clear distinction and that I believe is what scares people the most. Machines, or robots, with the capacity to be identical with humans. Would I do it regardless of the consequences? I feel that it is not my place to do this. Creating a form of life with the ability to wipe out the entire human race if it went rogue is not something that should be done on a "let's try this and see what happens" moment.

    3. Artificial Intelligence. It is both a great source of fascination and apprehension. If an AI decides to wipe out human life and replace us with machines like in the "Terminator" series or if it helps humanity develop itself and enhance our ability to expand across the stars as we see in so many science fiction material. I suppose it all depends on how a different form of intelligence judges if humanity as a whole is good or bad.

    • What is your favorite example of a science fiction influence in a horror or fantasy story (movies, TV, books, comics, etc.)?

I think that for me books is the main influence. I like fantasy but not horror, even they can be related.

    • If you could create or manipulate science/technology to better your life, what would you do, and would you do it regardless of the consequences?

I think I would find a way to get rid of all diseases. It's something that is just not funded enough.

    • Is there an example of a potential misuse of science that scares you?

I hate how animals are tested. They have a right to live a less dangerous life. Also nuclear weapons.

    1. Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is definitely my favourite example of Dark Science.

    2. I'd like to say I would explore something beneficial to society but, knowing me, I would most likely follow in the footsteps of Dr. Griffin, as in turning invisible.

    3. Real-life science doesn't really scare me. I'm concerned where science will go, but not scared.

I'd say that Dark-Science is still very popular, what with Rocky Horror Picture Show and Repo! The Genetic Opera being cult classics. But it is very versatile and can be used for comedy as well as drama.

(1)For classic Dark-Science, I go for both Frankenstein and Dr.Jekyl&Mr.Hyde. I love the musicals of Rocky Horror Picture Show,Little Petshop of Horrors and Repo!the Genetic Opera.

(2)I'd love for science to cure chronic ailments like diabetes, arthritis, asthma and others. And for limb regeneration.Maybe an awakening of psychic abilities or better cybernetics. What some call Biopunk.

(3)Misuse of technology would be unwilling experimentation on either humans or humanoids. That and rampant pollution if the chemicals are just dumped and not properly stored.

    1. My favorite example of science fiction influence, is "Stan Lee's: The traveler". It's about a scientist named Ronald, who gets caught in a time loop.

    2. If I could manipulate science/ technology to better my life, I would use it to cure my mother of her Lupus.

    3. The one misuse of technology that still scares me today, is the creation of the atomic bomb.

Sorry I wasn't available for the questions. I was super busy yesterday, thus forcing me to skip them.

    Anyways, here goes:

    • What is your favorite example of a science fiction influence in a horror or fantasy story (movies, TV, books, comics, etc.)?

    A. Here are a few favourite examples:

Movies: Star Wars (George Lucas / Disney), Godzilla (Toho), All George Romero films, etc
    TV: Futurama (Matt Groening)
Literature: War of the Worlds (H.G. Wells), Nineteen-Eighty Four (George Orwell), Ready, Player One (Ernest Cline), Frankenstein (Mary Shelley), Dracula (Bram Stoker)
Video Games: Serious Sam (Croteam), Half-life / Portal (Valve), Doom (iD Software), Dead Space (EA Games), Outlast (Red Barrel Games), Spore (Maxis), etc
Comic: Marvel, DC Comics and Dark Horse Comics

    • If you could create or manipulate science/technology to better your life, what would you do, and would you do it regardless of the consequences?

    A. That is a tricky question to answer. I would probably say genetics, biology and possibly, bio-augmentation

    • Is there an example of a potential misuse of science that scares you?

    A. Nothing in particular, but I've played Doom 3 before, and it is literally up to 11 on the dark and edgy scale (e.g. Transformation into demons).

    • What is your favorite example of a science fiction influence in a horror or fantasy story (movies, TV, books, comics, etc.)?

Magic: The Gathering is in my opinion, is a wonderful blend of many forms of fantasy, including Lovecraftian (Battle For Zendikar, Shadows Over Innistrad), Steampunk (Kaladesh), Apocalyptic (Hour Of Devastation), and many other forms.

    • If you could create or manipulate science/technology to better your life, what would you do, and would you do it regardless of the consequences?

I've always been a fan of Deus Ex, so I would probably create augmentations and nanotechnology. Hopefully, I could find a form of gene therapy that could get rid of the need for acceptance drugs like Neuropozyne.

    • Is there an example of a potential misuse of science that scares you?

Interdimensional nasties like the Vex and Nicol Bolas
