Science Fiction in Horror and Fantasy

Author: eawood Header artwork by: vladmrk

When one thinks of creatures that lurk in the realms of horror and fantasy, an often overlooked detail is how science influences their creation and how action and adventure bring their narrative to life.

Take the case of the Mummy, an age-old concept of fear of the dead coming back to life. To the ancient Egyptians, mummification itself was a form of science rooted in their religious beliefs. While Universal put a fantastical new spin on this iteration seen in 2017’s the Mummy, it still kept true to the roots that scared theater goers of yesteryear—the walking dead powered by mysticism. But however powerful this mysticism, it gained control of biological science to reanimate this corpse and bring the Mummy back to life. Every creature, monster or character from the shadows of a nightmare can find its origin in the annals of Dark Science.

Artwork by: lancerdrake

Take a look behind the scenes on how The Mummy blended mysticism and science fiction in the creation of Dr. Jekyll’s lab - The Prodigium.

Dr. Frankenstein's lab in Mary Shelley's 1819 novel was the birthplace of a new kind of science. In the book Mary Shelley uses Frankenstein's experiment as a way to explore the limitations of scientific progress, and to ask questions about the ethics of it.

Mad Scientist thegryph

Specifically, can science resurrect the dead, and more to the point, should it? Generations of storytellers after Shelley would incorporate examples of science being used to dark, foreboding ends. Not least among them was the Robert Louis Stevenson character Dr. Jekyll, and his famously destructive alter-ego, Mr. Hyde.

Dr. Jekyll's lab, housed in London's Museum of Natural History, also serves as a headquarters for a secret group dedicated to finding and neutralizing evil. It is called The Prodigium. In The Mummy, Dr. Jekyll has been transformed from merely being a scientist with a dark secret to an academic who specializes in evil "Mary Shelley... explore the limitations of scientific progress, and to ask questions about the ethics of it." and spends his life working to hunt it down. The Prodigium is the venue where Jekyll conducts his studies and stores artifacts. Having access to the resources of the museum allows him to perform in-depth research. Among the many curiosities seen inside the lab you'll find the skull of Dracula as well as The Creature From the Black Lagoon's arm.

Studying such auspicious and dangerous creatures is far from what constitutes a routine scientific endeavor. Just like Dr. Frankenstein flipping the switch and electrifying his cadaver back to life, this is a different kind of science with its own set of dark consequences. Dark science is what happens when science goes too far. For Dr. Frankenstein, it meant inadvertently creating a monster. For historical characters in fiction like Dr. Faust, it meant making a deal with the devil in order to discern the secrets of the universe. The Prodigium ultimately may have a noble goal driving it, but that doesn't mean that it's safe, or that unintended consequences can't spring out of it.

Creature from the black lagoon ogilvie

The idea of dark science originates from exploring the connection between scientific progress and the potential for danger. By trying to break the barrier between life and death, Dr. Frankenstein creates a monster. In looking for evidence of a long-lost species, the scientists in The Creature From the Black Lagoon incur the wrath of a mysterious menace. In Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea men use new technology to explore new depths and get more than they bargained for. In The War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells, a super advanced civilization from Mars attacks earth with metal walkers equipped with hi-tech weapons. Science has long provided a foundation for tales of monsters, evil forces, and other mortal perils. When Mary Shelley sat down to write Frankenstein, one of the ideological "Dark science originates from exploring the connection between scientific progress and the potential for danger."questions she wrestled with was the idea that although progress in society followed from knowledge—like diseases being cured, or transportation improving—there was no inherently good guiding principle underpinning that progress. In other words, technological advances could be used for evil just as easily as they could be used for good. That truth opened up all kinds of possibilities, especially for storytellers looking to tell harrowing tales. Many of the most recognizable horror stories and thriller titles of all time—Frankenstein, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, War of the Worlds, and The Creature From the Black Lagoon among them—deal with man's pursuit of knowledge leading to terrifying outcomes, or show how technological progress can have deadly consequences.

Although Mary Shelley, Jules Verne, and H.G. Wells are considered among the founding authors of science fiction, the genre didn't exist as we know it when these writers were alive. These authors laid the groundwork for later science fiction storytellers, and they also founded a long trend of combining speculative, fictional science with Horror or Gothic storytelling. The common element that stories traversing these two genres almost always shared? Action, and plenty of it. It's only natural for conflict to arrive when weaponized machines start taking over cities, or when re-animated corpses begin terrorizing the living, but heroism and action-packed adventures also provided a solid underpinning for these kinds of stories, which manage to explore profound questions about society and progress while still providing a thoroughly entertaining experience. "It's only natural for conflict to arrive when weaponized machines start taking over cities"Dr. Jekyll is perhaps the perfect embodiment of this kind of blending. His work requires putting himself in harm's way, but it also requires the strong mental faculties of science. And the fact that he has a violent alter-ego ensures that chaos and action will follow wherever he goes. Dr. Jekyll's future path of horror, science fiction, and action will definitely be worth keeping an eye on.

1. "Aliens" would be my top choice. The idea that there is hostile life somewhere beyond our solar system is not as farfetched as a lot of people believe it to be. The universe is never-ending. Who knows what is out there?

2. I would create a viewing glass that would allow me to see into the future. Not to see my own death, but to see what will become of the earth if we do not take care of her. I could use what I know to influence people to take care of our planet. By doing this, we could conserve forests, oceans and everything in between. Maybe the cure for cancer is a plant in the center of the Amazon rain forest, which is being demolished as I write this.

3. I could become power-hungry like every other science person. Or I could become insane with all that knowledge about the future of our planet. Or I could be a decent person who just wants to help.

1. 1984 forever. Thought criminal is something that helps me to understand something powerful-- how important it is to have that power to think what you want, to say what you want. To be punished for thoughts alone-- dystopia. Also any alien apocalypse and something with robots. Also time travel. Oh I could go on and on, but I usually start with 1984. It's what I would teach if I were an English teacher.

2. I would cure all of my chronic illnesses, and I wouldn't care about the consequences, no.

3. I like making things. This is considered sort of science for some reason. But so is ancient philosophy from Ancient Greece, because that's where science comes from. The atom was first thought of by Democritus and both Pyrrho and Aristotle disbelieved him. No one is allowed to do that anymore. Every time you make something and it works you know you did something. But when something is a theory and you want people to believe you, that's something else. Something called philosophy. So no I'm not scared of philosophy, but my dad did major in it in college and I've read some books and there are scientists in the family. That's why my favorite science fiction is the most ridiculous and unbelievable. and I also like fantasy. I love fiction that's got some crazy stuff in it.

Maybe mechanical wings, that would be awesome!! The idea of being able to fly around sounds pretty cool~ OR perhaps something like J.A.R.V.I.S from Iron Man, able to do everything in mid-air and at your very fingertips XD

- What is your favorite example of a science fiction influence in a horror or fantasy story (movies, TV, books, comics, etc.)?
"Castle in the sky" of Miyasaki, robots and nuclear weapons ;

-If you could create or manipulate science/technology to better your life, what would you do, and would you do it regardless of the consequences?
Space-time manipulation, gravity manipulation, maybe hyperspace utilisation for going faster than the light and explore the solar system, and the Universe.

-Is there an example of a potential misuse of science that scares you?
1. Solaris (Asimov's foundation circle) : a planet inhabited by 1000 pers. and for each 5000 up to 7000 robots. There is no human interaction, reproduction is done by selection of desired genetic trait, education is dispensed by robots. People lives alone forever. I'm afraid of this because this is the embodiment of "freedom" nowadays.
2. Aurora (Asimov) : sex replaces love, people are over arrogant because of being overly individualist. They feel everyday superior. Physics, Maths and other hard science is considered superior to other source of knowledge like philosophy, psychology, biology. Putting Mathematics as a god, they forgot that an adaptation to their planet is a necessity (killing adapted human by eugenism) and in the end they disappeared.
3. We : a society where logic, mathematics is considered as a path to make people happy. Emotions is considered as a form of irrationality that should be suppressed. Sex replaces love between two people.

Overuse of science like putting it as a sort of god, as the only and final way of happiness.

1) My favorite movie regarding horror an fantasy genre would be the type of movie that consist of weapons and explosions such as the Transformers series, They shows us the capability of what robotics machine could do especially the war machines since transformers are those type of film and demonstrate the effect of machinery and AI onto our world.

2)Instead of my own life i would like to benefit the whole world and with that if i am able to create the technology and discover a way to reverse or thicken back our atmosphere i don't think there be much of consequences unless i see it wrong that thickening the atmosphere may also raises the danger of war since the nuclear bombs are kinda on hold because of the thin atmosphere but that's just one of my perspective. To be able to recover the atmosphere back will effect on everyone life and give them a healthier day outside against the radioactive rays of our sun.

3)A misuse of science that scares me are weapons. If science are able to create a weapon with destructive power, Invisibility and an Armor that could withstand a direct contact with a nuclear bomb this is a threat that could be unstoppable if it falls under the wrong hand.

2. I think the science of cloning is interesting enough that being able to manipulate the masses into giving the green light for human clones for the purpose of lengthening the lifespan of the average individual would be cool. Regardless of the moral consequences, transplanting the brain of one person into a younger version of himself could be the first step towards immortality, with those transplanted living decades longer than they were supposed to.

3. It's a tie between automation and psychological manipulation, because both are tools in today's world where the businessman or politician can use to save money and convince a populous that nothing is awry, even when they experience the loss in high paying jobs. It's simple: when they manipulate to win something, you tend to lose something, and there's not much that can be done against it.

1. I remember reading Frankenstein when I was younger (not even as a high school requirement or anything, just for fun), and it has stayed with me to this day. Mary Shelley is truly the grandmother of science fiction. Though she does have a tendency to go off on tangents on occasion.

2. I will do what I think must be done, whether for necessity or simply coming closer to optimization. (Perhaps ironically, I'm not one of those people who tries to do a lot of min-maxing in RPGs.) However, the consequences must be considered. Science and engineering, like anything else, most be used responsibly. My issue is simply that there are many people who disagree with me on what is considered responsible.

3. Honestly, it is not projects like genetic engineering or artificial intelligence that frighten me -- and as someone pursuing an education in bioengineering, I see some of the other things that people have listed and it hurts. It is not biology, information technology or mechanical engineering that I fear being misused, it is psychology. Marketing -- whether of a product, an idea, or a celebrity or politician (like Donald Trump), is a powerful thing, and when there are so many people in the world who have not yet learned to analyze things and think for themselves, it can be all too easy to manipulate people into doing things that are destructive or just stupid.

1. Woah, that has to be Tron Legacy and the documentaries from Discovery Science: Through the Wormhole with Morgan Freeman. While the latter is technically not fiction, nothing gets my creative gears grinding as much as philosophy, quantum science and IT. Especially IT.
2. The more diseases we cure and the longer we live, the more limits must be placed on reproduction. I believe humanity would be better off with a smaller global population but the means to achieve this do not have to be war, famine or suffering. We can only enjoy life as immortal beings without consuming the planet we call home by changing the way we think about reproduction.
3. When one person or global organisation has acquired the power to eradicate all free will. I firmly believe the meaning of life is what we choose to give it, therefor without free will there can be no meaning.

- What is your favorite example of a science fiction influence in a horror or fantasy story (movies, TV, books, comics, etc.)?

I would have to say The Modern Prometheus or Frankenstein. It was honestly really cool and entertaining. I loved reading it in English.

- If you could create or manipulate science/technology to better your life, what would you do, and would you do it regardless of the consequences?

I dunno, I'd probably invent a machine that would keep idiots far off my rear-end on the roads. Every time they got to close to my car, BANG! machine bashes their cars. I just really like being mean. :3

- Is there an example of a potential misuse of science that scares you?

Intelligent robots are bad. Mkay? We need to keep them dumb, or they'll start learning on their own, if they haven't already.

There's a great movie called Eden Log that to me exemplifies Dark Science, really well. It's a french film, that explores an underground facility that has been destroyed by some bizarre science experiment and is haunted by these horrific humanoid beats. You watch it through the eyes of a man who can't remember who he is and what's going as he pieces his life back together. It's crazy. Highly suggest it. Here's the IMDB write up on it. www.imdb.com/title/tt1087842/

1. zombies are THE BEST
2. you could call me evil but I would probably invent these drinks that made people have superpowers, y'know so there would be superheroes and stuff and the world wouldn't be so boring, the consequences would probably be failed mutant experiments and super villains, but the world would have more action and stuff sooo ye   (another consequence would be me being that crazy scientist who started the zombie apocalypse but meh, zombies are awesome)
3. you know those horror stories were they're experimenting on humans than something goes wrong and the experiments go off and haunt people? yeeeaahh that....
