Take the case of the Mummy, an age-old concept of fear of the dead coming back to life. To the ancient Egyptians, mummification itself was a form of science rooted in their religious beliefs. While Universal put a fantastical new spin on this iteration seen in 2017’s the Mummy, it still kept true to the roots that scared theater goers of yesteryear—the walking dead powered by mysticism. But however powerful this mysticism, it gained control of biological science to reanimate this corpse and bring the Mummy back to life. Every creature, monster or character from the shadows of a nightmare can find its origin in the annals of Dark Science. Artwork by: lancerdrake Take a look behind the scenes on how The Mummy blended mysticism and science fiction in the creation of Dr. Jekyll’s lab - The Prodigium. Dr. Frankenstein's lab in Mary Shelley's 1819 novel was the birthplace of a new kind of science. In the book Mary Shelley uses Frankenstein's experiment as a way to explore the limitations of scientific progress, and to ask questions about the ethics of it. Specifically, can science resurrect the dead, and more to the point, should it? Generations of storytellers after Shelley would incorporate examples of science being used to dark, foreboding ends. Not least among them was the Robert Louis Stevenson character Dr. Jekyll, and his famously destructive alter-ego, Mr. Hyde. Dr. Jekyll's lab, housed in London's Museum of Natural History, also serves as a headquarters for a secret group dedicated to finding and neutralizing evil. It is called The Prodigium. In The Mummy, Dr. Jekyll has been transformed from merely being a scientist with a dark secret to an academic who specializes in evil "Mary Shelley... explore the limitations of scientific progress, and to ask questions about the ethics of it." and spends his life working to hunt it down. The Prodigium is the venue where Jekyll conducts his studies and stores artifacts. Having access to the resources of the museum allows him to perform in-depth research. Among the many curiosities seen inside the lab you'll find the skull of Dracula as well as The Creature From the Black Lagoon's arm. Studying such auspicious and dangerous creatures is far from what constitutes a routine scientific endeavor. Just like Dr. Frankenstein flipping the switch and electrifying his cadaver back to life, this is a different kind of science with its own set of dark consequences. Dark science is what happens when science goes too far. For Dr. Frankenstein, it meant inadvertently creating a monster. For historical characters in fiction like Dr. Faust, it meant making a deal with the devil in order to discern the secrets of the universe. The Prodigium ultimately may have a noble goal driving it, but that doesn't mean that it's safe, or that unintended consequences can't spring out of it. In looking for evidence of a long-lost species, the scientists in The Creature From the Black Lagoon incur the wrath of a mysterious menace. In Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea men use new technology to explore new depths and get more than they bargained for. In The War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells, a super advanced civilization from Mars attacks earth with metal walkers equipped with hi-tech weapons. Science has long provided a foundation for tales of monsters, evil forces, and other mortal perils. When Mary Shelley sat down to write Frankenstein, one of the ideological "Dark science originates from exploring the connection between scientific progress and the potential for danger."questions she wrestled with was the idea that although progress in society followed from knowledge—like diseases being cured, or transportation improving—there was no inherently good guiding principle underpinning that progress. In other words, technological advances could be used for evil just as easily as they could be used for good. That truth opened up all kinds of possibilities, especially for storytellers looking to tell harrowing tales. Many of the most recognizable horror stories and thriller titles of all time—Frankenstein, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, War of the Worlds, and The Creature From the Black Lagoon among them—deal with man's pursuit of knowledge leading to terrifying outcomes, or show how technological progress can have deadly consequences. Wells are considered among the founding authors of science fiction, the genre didn't exist as we know it when these writers were alive. These authors laid the groundwork for later science fiction storytellers, and they also founded a long trend of combining speculative, fictional science with Horror or Gothic storytelling. The common element that stories traversing these two genres almost always shared? Action, and plenty of it. It's only natural for conflict to arrive when weaponized machines start taking over cities, or when re-animated corpses begin terrorizing the living, but heroism and action-packed adventures also provided a solid underpinning for these kinds of stories, which manage to explore profound questions about society and progress while still providing a thoroughly entertaining experience. 1. I love anything Night vale. Its just so many things that I'm not even sure what it is anymore and I love it! Its a really unique kind of story telling because there's almost no descriptions of anything. Its your own imagination that creates what you visualize. All your told is how people react to them.

3. Any war technology. I really have trouble understanding war and what people are willing to go to for something, in my view, pointless. Its one of the lowest points of humanity. Again, in my view.

I love how super hero stories try to have a scientifical explanation instead of just writting it off as "magic" it shows they put a lot of thought and research into the final story.
- If you could create or manipulate science/technology to better your life, what would you do, and would you do it regardless of the consequences?
I would make it more assessable to others, so everyone has equal opportunities. But, as a law-abiding citizen, I would stop if there was consequences.
- Is there an example of a potential misuse of science that scares you?
Technology in war scares me, how the touch of a button can end the lives of millions. That is too much power for one person/machine.

It has to be the original fantasy Star Trek, without which we probably wouldn't have cellphones, shuttles, or game platforms with VR not to mention all the VR in filming and new styles of filming with CGI.

Not sure of "regardless of the consequences" but using technology to improve hearing, eyesight, and other bodily functions (no ulcers) would be nice. Rebuilding my knees and back would be nice.

Of course, making bombs, making any war materials, fracking as it ruins water tables, or drilling beyond safe boundaries.
As of now, we only have one Earth to live on, so we need to keep it livable and usable without ruining all the resources for future generations.

1. Well, my LEAST favorite would be The Tomorrow Code. I read that book years ago and it still freaks me out!
As for my favorite, well, it's kind of hard to decide. I read (and watch) a lot of stuff, and a lot of it mixes in sci-fi elements. The Pern novels, for instance, or a lot of Andre Norton's stuff. And Doctor Who, of course.
2. I think... I think one of the things I would do is find a cure for FIP. It's too late for it to be of any use to me, but I wish that that horrible disease could be cured so that no one else has to lose their kitten to it. Alzheimer's, too. And I'd want to find a way to discover the secrets of severe weather, so that fewer people lose their lives to it, and to find a way to better create and animate, because everyone needs a good movie every now and again to escape from real life... But if there were dire consequences, I would weigh the risks before I made any move forwards, and if the risk was too great, then I wouldn't.
3. Frankly, at this point, we have the potential to do so much good and so much harm to both ourselves and our planet... A lot of things scare me, but I would have to say that nuclear weapons are pretty high on the list right now.

3. It's a neck and neck between a zombie apocalypse via bioengineered virus or the machine uprising thanks to the advanced AI. But there's always living long enough to see yourself as the villain.

1. Van Helsing with Hugh Jackman or the Underworld series because there's a lot of science in both that brought about more powerful and darker creatures than have ever existed prior to the beginning of their worlds... also there's a bunch of badasses who go for the throat.
2. I would create a way for me to fly and retain my humanity (no transforming into a bird or anything like that). Yes regardless of the consequences. No, it would not be for superpowers or for the greater good, it'd be for me because I've always literally dreamed of flying and I have the most bittersweet longing whenever I see any flying or free-falling scenes in movies and that tells me more than anything that I was meant to fly at some point in time... Plus I'd never have to pay for gas again.
3. Biochemical warfare. It's not even potential. It was designed to be misused. It wouldn't be hard for one whack job to spread the worst disease to the world and kill everyone they don't "choose" to save.

The Resident Evil games (specifically the remastered version, that was awesome but terrified me)

I would like to create something that would allow you (mainly scientists and doctors) to see inside the mind of a person with special needs. ANSWER: Mine would be the Goosebumps and Martin Mystery Seiries and my favorite Lucy movie.

2. I wouldn't make myself immortal. I'd like to die when I'm ready (like, really old, with no pain, leaving a heritage filled with knowledge). I would mostly help people with deadly diseases, and do something like Deadpool's regenerative power to people who lost their body members to something, like a war, a paraplegic disease or an accident.
3. Bombs, guns and radioactive accidents are the kind of science I fear. Getting immortality makes me sad.

This is a hard question to answer, but here goes;
If I were to create/manipulate science or technology to make my life better, I would want to try and find lots of ways to help people with weight problems. I'm not a doctor or anything (and I'm not planning on being one due to fears of medical-related areas, etc.), but since I'm having trouble trying to get rid of the small belly fat off my stomach, I would really want to try to find ways to get rid of it, though I feel like it's not going to happen. And the thing about diabetes scares me a lot because I was almost diagnosed with diabetes last year, and I've been trying to keep myself from getting diabetes, since a lot of my family members have diabetes, and I don't want to be next to have it.
I know this isn't a good answer, but I wanted to find another way of answering the question.

Watching a transformation of a person into a monster in a science lab, and scientists operating on aliens to learn more about them, but then the aliens wake up and attack the scientists
