Learn how science fiction helps build better monsters in film, literature, and beyond!

Facebook Google+ Science Fiction in Horror and Fantasy Author: eawood Header artwork by: vladmrk When one thinks of creatures that lurk in the realms of horror and fantasy, an often overlooked detail is how science influences their creation and how action and adventure bring their narrative to life. Take the case of the Mummy, an age-old concept of fear of the dead coming back to life. To the ancient Egyptians, mummification itself was a form of science rooted in their religious beliefs. While Universal put a fantastical new spin on this iteration seen in 2017’s the Mummy, it still kept true to the roots that scared theater goers of yesteryear—the walking dead powered by mysticism. But however powerful this mysticism, it gained control of biological science to reanimate this corpse and bring the Mummy back to life. Every creature, monster or character from the shadows of a nightmare can find its origin in the annals of Dark Science. Artwork by: lancerdrake Take a look behind the scenes on how The Mummy blended mysticism and science fiction in the creation of Dr. Jekyll’s lab - The Prodigium. Dr. Frankenstein's lab in Mary Shelley's 1819 novel was the birthplace of a new kind of science. In the book Mary Shelley uses Frankenstein's experiment as a way to explore the limitations of scientific progress, and to ask questions about the ethics of it. Specifically, can science resurrect the dead, and more to the point, should it? Generations of storytellers after Shelley would incorporate examples of science being used to dark, foreboding ends. Not least among them was the Robert Louis Stevenson character Dr. Jekyll, and his famously destructive alter-ego, Mr. Hyde. Dr. Jekyll's lab, housed in London's Museum of Natural History, also serves as a headquarters for a secret group dedicated to finding and neutralizing evil. It is called The Prodigium. In The Mummy, Dr. Jekyll has been transformed from merely being a scientist with a dark secret to an academic who specializes in evil "Mary Shelley... explore the limitations of scientific progress, and to ask questions about the ethics of it." and spends his life working to hunt it down. The Prodigium is the venue where Jekyll conducts his studies and stores artifacts. Having access to the resources of the museum allows him to perform in-depth research. Among the many curiosities seen inside the lab you'll find the skull of Dracula as well as The Creature From the Black Lagoon's arm. Studying such auspicious and dangerous creatures is far from what constitutes a routine scientific endeavor. Just like Dr. Frankenstein flipping the switch and electrifying his cadaver back to life, this is a different kind of science with its own set of dark consequences. Dark science is what happens when science goes too far. For Dr. Frankenstein, it meant inadvertently creating a monster. For historical characters in fiction like Dr. Faust, it meant making a deal with the devil in order to discern the secrets of the universe. The Prodigium ultimately may have a noble goal driving it, but that doesn't mean that it's safe, or that unintended consequences can't spring out of it. Artwork by: Valzonline Creature from the black lagoon ogilvie The idea of dark science originates from exploring the connection between scientific progress and the potential for danger. By trying to break the barrier between life and death, Dr. Frankenstein creates a monster. In looking for evidence of a long-lost species, the scientists in The Creature From the Black Lagoon incur the wrath of a mysterious menace. In Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea men use new technology to explore new depths and get more than they bargained for. In The War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells, a super advanced civilization from Mars attacks earth with metal walkers equipped with hi-tech weapons. Science has long provided a foundation for tales of monsters, evil forces, and other mortal perils. When Mary Shelley sat down to write Frankenstein, one of the ideological "Dark science originates from exploring the connection between scientific progress and the potential for danger."questions she wrestled with was the idea that although progress in society followed from knowledge—like diseases being cured, or transportation improving—there was no inherently good guiding principle underpinning that progress. In other words, technological advances could be used for evil just as easily as they could be used for good. That truth opened up all kinds of possibilities, especially for storytellers looking to tell harrowing tales. Many of the most recognizable horror stories and thriller titles of all time—Frankenstein, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, War of the Worlds, and The Creature From the Black Lagoon among them—deal with man's pursuit of knowledge leading to terrifying outcomes, or show how technological progress can have deadly consequences. Artwork by: AshleyCope Although Mary Shelley, Jules Verne, and H.G. Wells are considered among the founding authors of science fiction, the genre didn't exist as we know it when these writers were alive. These authors laid the groundwork for later science fiction storytellers, and they also founded a long trend of combining speculative, fictional science with Horror or Gothic storytelling. The common element that stories traversing these two genres almost always shared? Action, and plenty of it. It's only natural for conflict to arrive when weaponized machines start taking over cities, or when re-animated corpses begin terrorizing the living, but heroism and action-packed adventures also provided a solid underpinning for these kinds of stories, which manage to explore profound questions about society and progress while still providing a thoroughly entertaining experience. "It's only natural for conflict to arrive when weaponized machines start taking over cities"Dr. Jekyll is perhaps the perfect embodiment of this kind of blending. His work requires putting himself in harm's way, but it also requires the strong mental faculties of science. And the fact that he has a violent alter-ego ensures that chaos and action will follow wherever he goes. Dr. Jekyll's future path of horror, science fiction, and action will definitely be worth keeping an eye on. 2. I would crack the code of genetics to help fix genetic defects.
3. Nano-machines, definitely. Those things are cool and all, but who's to say that they can't be used to enslave people while they are fully conscious? It'll be like getting a hitman, even if said hitman is unwilling to kill.

You've put a lot of depth into this but I feel that it's worth mentioning how Frankenstein's monster is largely benign and harmless until he is mistreated purely for his appearance. A lot of studies go into detail about how Dr Frankenstein himself can be perceived as the real monster while the monster itself is a victim.

2)I would make myself a cyborg. Regardless of consequence.
3)The day they figure out immortality. Gotta figure, only the rich could afford that and then we will never, ever get rid of the one percent. They would rule humanity with their Frankenstein living death slavery apparatus's and forever stamp out any hope for any kind of meaningful existence.
Exactly like how things are now. XD But they live forever.

- What is your favorite example of a science fiction influence in a horror or fantasy story (movies, TV, books, comics, etc.)?
Honestly, I have a soft spot for experimentation gone wrong and post-apocalyptic (due to infection, lack of resourses, zombies, or all lol). Resident Evil has always been a favourite of mine, the Matrix, I am legend, and I, Robot are also my faves. World War Z, however, holds a special place in my heart.
- If you could create or manipulate science/technology to better your life, what would you do, and would you do it regardless of the consequences?
Health sciences come to mind immediately.
I mean, for medicine, being a student nurse opened my eyes to how health care and medical research has led to amazing advancements such as cures for many diseases and how many lives were spared because of it. But the thing is, if the population's mortality rate to birth ratio decreases due to this advancement in health care, that will eventually lead to overpopulation and a higher demand for health care—which means more money needs to be spent to accomodate people's needs. Look at bacterial resistance. The consequences of relying too much on medicine has lead to other problems of simply curing diseases due to overpriscription of antibiotics and is nature's way of saying that we are relying too much on medicine.
But that means a higher population means a likelyhood to develop new diseases or run out of the needed resources to sustain it. Nature always finds a balance and when that balance is tipped, there are consequences that can cost more peoples' live. It's something that isn't black and white and we have to look at both sides of the spectrum of whether or not health care will benefit humanity in the future. We need to be critical about how we rely on health sciences but we must also have a moral understanding.
There's this conspiracy saying that there is a cure for all types of cancer and common illnesses like the common cold, but is being held back by big pharma companies so that they can exploit people's health needs by selling them expensive treatments etc and make a profit off their suffering. That is beyond inhumane and is abuse to what health care really is about. But at the same time, I feel sometimes there is a necessasity to hold back health advancements for the greater good of humanity. We must be given time to adapt to these changes if we are to face new problems.
Health care evolves constantly, but humanity should first.
- Is there an example of a potential misuse of science that scares you?
Technology is what scares me. It certainly has helped us over the years, but its evolving so fast and we can't catch up to it that we become so engrossed and dependent on it. I dare say it's dumbing us down in a way. Social media has made social interaction easier than ever, but it's also inhibiting it. Look at people and you'll see they are constantly on their phones that they don't even pay attention to the outside world around them.
Look at Einstein's famous saying: "I fear the day that technology will surpass our human interaction. The world will have a generation of idiots."
My family prohibits my sister and I from having our phones at the dinner table as we would very likely text our friends instead of communicating with family.
Technology has also affected entertainment. It's pretty rare nowadays to see young children outside playing and getting the exercise they need. My neighbours have two sons in middle school and they spend most of their time playing video games or on their phone. Even I have been affected by it. I used to go for walks and do things like go to the pool but since I got my first cell phone and laptop I've become a complete shut-in ever since haha!
Children as young as 2 already have IPads! Not everyone does it for their child and there are many benefits to it, but why should technology replace basic human interaction, especially at a critical stage that is very well in development?
These are my thoughts, what about yours?

- If you could create or manipulate science/technology to better your life, what would you do, and would you do it regardless of the consequences? I tend to be to cautious to just ignore the consequences. I would ponder first.
- Is there an example of a potential misuse of science that scares you? The current destruction of the enviorment is already very terrifying.

human experiments scare me the most, because I feel like that's when science goes to far. to experiment on any living thing is scary. a good example (In my opinion) is the Russian sleep experiment. if I could create something to better myself, despite the consequences, I would make synthetic arms, completely robotic, to better my own useless and fleshy ones, since I have arthrogryposes.

Basically the existence of aliens when space travel has been fully developed, only to find out said aliens are not the stereotypical Greys.
2: I would try to develop a technology that creates things out of light. Similar to what Green Lantern could do with his ring to make things, except have a more scientific version. Perhaps "hard-light" technology. I would use this to restore places that have been destroyed, or provide shelter for those who need it. Perhaps create things that could aid, similar to 3d printing.
