Description It began in a dark lab underneath a town in the Kalos Region. The town in description was Geosenge City. The exact center of it had three ancient pillar-like stones that pointed up. At the time, it was nightfall, with countless stars blinking in the sky. And underneath it, there were two men overseeing what appeared to be a Pokémon in a tube.

One of them was a pale man, with muscular build, blue eyes and pointed red hair connected to his beard. He also wore a black suit, lined in red with a fluffy gray collar and black dress shoes. He also wore a pair of black fingerless gloves, as well as having a ring on his left middle finger. And the other had a blue collared shirt with a white lab coat over it, as well as raven-colored hair with a bang going over one frame of his face in a bizarre wave. The first of the two turned to his partner as he spoke with a smile before turning to one tank in front of him which held an unusual Pokémon. It had a bipedal feline-like Pokémon. Its appearance is loosely based on a Pokémon in one of the monitors that looked similar to it, with more of a mutated humanoid look in addition to its feline traits. Its body was purple, the tail being a darker coloring if it, and it had three fingers on each hand with ball-sized nuns at the end of it.

“You’ve done the right thing to consult me on this matter, Fuji. Creating the world’s strongest Pokémon is sure to be the first of many stepping stones toward peace.”

Fuji turned to the man, bearing a somewhat hopeful look as he looked at the adjacent tube, which held a brightly glowing red light inside it.

“Hopefully including my own, Lysandre...”

As Lysandre and Fuji looked upon the two, they remained unaware of the events inside the Pokémon’s mindscape. Thus far, it was surrounded in darkness.

“Where am I? Who am I? What am I?”

Lysandre kept his gaze upon the Pokémon before he gave his two cents.

“It appears to be like all the other clones, doctor. It hasn't quite gained consciousness just yet.”

“I just don't understand it. Its other vital signs are strong.”

Lysandre maintained his smirk as he spoke under his breath.

“Then it could be perhaps that it is awake, after all...”

Lysandre turned to the man behind him from afar. He had orange, oddly-cut hair, resembling a flame, with a goatee on his chin. He also wore orange goggles, with a small microphone on his right ear, along with an orange tie with his orange suit and a pair of shoes. He also had a rubber glove on his left hand, while his other glove was sticking out of his left pocket on the suit.

“Xerosic, measure the Pokémon’s brainwave activity.”

“Yes, sir.”

All the while, the Pokémon was getting more and more confused.

“I sense others near me... what are those strange sounds they make?”

As if to answer, a faint drop of water is heard before a gentle, feminine voice replied.

“Those are words. They're talking.”

The Pokémon became confused as he looked around.

“Huh? Who are you? Where are you?”

The girl gave a small laugh before she answered again.

“What do you mean? I'm right here. Beside you.”

“Beside me?”

The Pokémon looked around him, just in time to see a bright light taking the form of a young girl before totally appearing in front of him. She had light green and long hair with delicate green eyes to go with it. She also had a plain, long-sleeved white dress with a cute red ribbon around the collar.

“I’m a human. I was born just like you.”

The Pokémon was puzzled for a moment. But it already began to think it must be the same.

“A human? Then I must be a human too!”

“Well, we can talk, so maybe you're a human. Or maybe I'm a Pokémon.”

“A human? A Pokemon? What's that? Which one am I?”

The girl made a small smile as she replied.

“Maybe it makes a difference to you if you’re a Pokémon or a person, but not to me. If you’re in this place, I guess you’re the same as all of us are.”

The Pokémon became further befuddled. As far as he saw, there was only two of them.

“All of us?”

“Yeah. Can't you hear? Everyone's voices... can you tell who they are?”

In that moment, a Bulbasaur, a Charmander, and a Squirtle appeared beside the two of them.

“Bulbasaur. Bulbatwo.”

“Char. Chartwo.”

“Squirtle. Squirtletwo.”

The Pokémon became intrigued by their names, more likely the two at the end.

“All of them..? Two? Why is everyone twos?”

“It means we're all clones. So we're not number ones, but twos.”

“Then, does that mean I'm a two too?”

“Yeah. I'm a two too. My name is Amber. But my real name is Ambertwo.”

“Ambertwo?”

“Not the real Amber, but Amber number two. No, maybe I'm Amberthree.”

“Amberthree?”

Ambertwo giggled before she explained using her fingers to count down.

“Yes! That's right. One, two, three, four... If there's a one, there's a two. And if there's a two, next is three! It's not strange at all. See? Now, you try.”

The Pokémon only had three fingers on each hand, but he could still count that much.

“One, two, three, four, five.”

“Isn't it great?”

The Pokémon wasn’t quite familiar with the word.

“Great?”

“Yeah. It means something’s really good. Like this: I don't care if I'm not real or whether I'm Aitwo, Aithree, or Aifour...I mean, we're all here! This is really great!”

The Pokémon then began to count again as he spoke up.

“One, two, three, four, five, six..., seven?”

Ambertwo confirmed with a nod before she and the Pokémon counted together.

“That's right. And...”

“Eight, nine..., ten!”

The two of them then laughed together in the mindscape.

Back in the laboratory, Xerosic was looking at the computer monitors when they suddenly began to display brainwaves of the clones, astonishing him as he made a dramatic gasp, catching Lysandre and Fuji’s attention as the former wanted an answer.

“What is it, Xerosic?”

“I'm not sure, Lysandre, but Mewtwo and Ambertwo seem to be communicating with the other clones!”

The two of them gasped in surprise before Fuji and Lysandre looked back, the latter having a theory as he put his fingers on his chin. None of them were awake, so only one thing could’ve explained it.

“They must be using telepathy. Which means... she must be awake as well.”

This news was more than Fuji could ever hope for, it seemed. His eyes widened as he held his hands together.

”Soon...”

Lysandre then took notice of the look of longing on Fuji’s face as he began to speak to himself.

“Please... please let my theories be true. I must see my little girl... smile... again.”

Lysandre sighed in pity towards him before he reassured him.

“Don’t worry yourself, Dr. Fuji. I’m sure your little one can live to see another day.”

Then, he turned back to the bright light, keeping his doubts to himself.

“Although... I wonder how long that will last.”

Meanwhile, at the surface of Geosenge Town, the grass around a giant rock began to shimmer, showing smaller green Pokémon in flashes before another stepped out from the clearing. It was a quadrupedal stag-like Pokémon with a blue and black coat. Along its back, it had multicolored spots, and it had long, gleaming yellow antlers that shine with all of the colors of the spectrum; its antlers resemble the roots of a tree. Its yellow-lined hooves were pointed, and it had a long blue and black tail. In the glint of its eyes is the shape of the letter "X", and when it stood, its body seemed to be in the shape of an "X".

But it was beside the point. Somehow, this Pokémon felt an out-of-place element. It couldn’t make out how or where, but something seemed off.

Meanwhile, Ambertwo and Mewtwo were flying over a town. It appeared to be a small city of sorts. Mewtwo was getting particularly excited about the knowledge it has obtained so far.

“Amber, I...I want to know more...and more!”

Ambertwo smiled before she accepted its request.

“Okay! I'll teach you everything I know. Like this place. I call this my remember place. This is where I used to live.”

Not long after that, the sun began to appear in the horizon, almost blinding Mewtwo.

“Huh? Amber... I can see something. I can feel something. What's that?”

Amber glanced to Mewtwo, taking interest in its fascination.

“You can feel it? You can see it?

“Yeah. What is that?”

“That's the sun.”

“What's it for?”

“It makes the whole world bright and keeps us warm all day.”

Mewtwo initially reached out for the sun. It wondered what it would be like to hold it in the palm of his hand. It wanted to feel the warmth all around it. But suddenly the wind blew, further intriguing the Pokémon.

“Oh...? What’s that?”

“That's called 'wind.'”

“Wind?”

“The wind helps us along. Sometimes it’s soft, and sometimes it’s very strong.”

The two of them then fly over to a city just as the sun began to set.

“And that's the sunset. That's when the sun says, ‘Goodnight! See you tomorrow.’”

In that moment, a full moon hovered over the city before Mewtwo noticed it.

“Is that a sun?”

The girl giggled at his question, but she nonetheless answered it.

“No. That's the moon. And the stars are the little lights that twinkle all night just so we won't feel alone in the dark. That’s why they're always shining at night.”

“Shining... hm...”

In that moment, Mewtwo noticed something odd down below. He saw a civilian eating something sweet at a table outside. It was a cake along with a bottle of milk.

“That? Amber... what's he eating?”

“That? Hehehe...that's just cake and milk that guy is eating.”

“Cake? Milk?”

“Cake is sweet... and soft... and adults don’t usually eat it, but children love it!”

“Then you must like it too, Amber.”

Ambertwo seemed stumped by this as she put her fingers on her chin.

“Hmm... Well, I've never had it before. I mean, I can't eat in here, not in the water.”

Mewtwo was confused. He didn’t see anything of the sort around him.

“Hmm? What’s water?”

“It’s kinda like milk, but you can see through it and it’s not as tasty, but it’s still good.”

“Oh. And what about milk?”

“It's something that newborn babies, not adults, want the most. But...”

Ambertwo made another round of giggles before she continued.

“I've never had that either. I've cried before because I wanted it though.”

Mewtwo then looked out towards the moon as he began to wonder about something.

“Why are we born?”

Ambertwo was quick to answer, as usual.

“Because of our parents. Like a papa and a mama. But the adults call them a father and a mother.”

Mewtwo turned back to Ambertwo as he asked a different question.

“Do we have a papa and a mama too?”

“Hmm... In our case, um...um... Nature, I guess.”

“Nature?”

Ambertwo giggled at this before Mewtwo’s curiosity persisted.

“Amber, what are we?”

“Well, for me, I’m a girl. A person. And you? You're a strange and a very wonderful pocket monster.”

“A pocket monster?“

“Uh-huh. That’s short for Pokémon.”

Amber two’s face then began to drop down in a slight frown.

“But I'm a copy, so... so...

After a moment of silence, a water dropped again, making Mewtwo worried.

“What's wrong? What's wrong, Amber?”

Ambertwo didn’t respond. However, she started to fade with stars glimmering all over her.

In the lab, the bright light began to dim while Xerosic saw the brainwave activity decline on one end.

“Oh, dear... We have bad news, Lysandre. Ambertwo is beginning to fade away.”

Lysandre and Fuji became aghast, the latter most of all.

“What? Then try to stabilize her.”

“But we can’t. Human clones can’t live more than 4 years.”

Lysandre drew a discontented sigh. He had a feeling that would come to pass. And Dr. Fuji wasn’t taking it any better. He placed his hand on the glass tank and watched as her light faded away with tears in his eyes.

“Amber...”

Up above, the Stag felt the light fade away. Nevertheless, it turned its head towards an empty spot on the ground. It wasn’t sure how, but it seemed to be coming from... below. Acting on this impression, the Pokémon walked over to that spot and stopped just above it.

Meanwhile, Mewtwo was beginning to get worried over Ambertwo’s condition as the world began to fade into darkness again.

“What's wrong, Amber? What's happening?”

Ambertwo only gave him a gentle laugh as she began to hold tears in her eyes.

“I think it's almost time for us to say goodbye.”

“Goodbye?”

In that moment, Ambertwo went over to Mewtwo before she gently placed her hands on its shoulders.

“Mewtwo... live, okay? I'm sure living is wonderful.”

Mewtwo couldn’t take the sadness in her voice. In turn, it began to shed its own tears, becoming baffled once again.

“I feel something... what are... these?”

Ambertwo made another soft giggle before she replied.

“Those are... tears.”

“Tears?”

“My Papa said all living things don't shed tears unless their bodies hurt. And the only ones who shed tears because they're sad are humans... and Pokémon, too. He said so in a bedtime story once, that when Pokémon are sad, and they cry, their tears are filled with life.”

Mewtwo’s tears then began to turn into streams as it spoke with hurt in its voice.

“I’m so... sad.”

Ambertwo held her arms around Mewtwo to help it feel better as she soothed its head.

“I know. But Mewtwo...”

“Huh?”

“...Thank you for your tears. But I have to go.”

“Why?”

“I don't know... but it’s all right. Thank you for caring about me... and don't cry, Mewtwo. You should be happy. You're alive, and life is wonderful.”

But it wasn’t enough for Mewtwo. In the short time it knew her, it began to see her as family. It didn’t want to be alone. Never again. Not after meeting the most kindhearted and innocent child it ever knew. She may be the only one it knew, but it stood by it nonetheless. Mewtwo held its arms around Ambertwo as it began to speak telepathically with pain reaching its peak.

“These tears... what good are they if you can’t be with me?!”

Mewtwo was becoming angry— no. Sad. It wanted so much for her to stay. It can’t let her go... it won’t...

In the lab, a psychic attack started eminating from Mewtwo’s unconscious body inside his glass tank. Lysandre noticed the development and became puzzled.

“Huh?”

“Please, Amber! Don't go! Please! Amber!!!”

On the monitor, there was a spike in the brainwaves, making Xerosic panic.

“Lysandre! Mewtwo's brain waves are out of control!”

Fuji knew what was happening and feared the outcome as he shouted.

“It's getting too upset! It mustn't remember this! Administer the serum! Do it immediatly!”

However, Lysandre had a different outlook as he held his hand up.

“Belay that order. Look.”

As it happened, Mewtwo’s aura was connecting itself to Ambertwo’s tank, and in turn, the bright light was beginning to grow again, astonishing Fuji as Lysandre turned back to Xerosic.

“Xerosic, how are Ambertwo’s brainwaves?”

Xerosic looked back at the monitor and became astonished.

“Incredible! Somehow, Mewtwo’s brainwaves are affecting Ambertwo’s. He’s boosting it up!”

Fuji made a gasp of surprise as he held his hands to his mouth.

“Does that mean...?”

Meanwhile, up above, the Stag Pokémon made a neigh as it raised its hooves before planting them on the ground as its antlers began to glow, and its whole body produced an aura holding many rainbows before it spread all over the area around it as the smaller green Pokémon looked on. As it happened, the aura began to burrow into one of the tiny holes its hooves inadvertently made from impact before the aura began burrowing deep underground. And as luck would have it, it was making its way... to Ambertwo.

In the lab, Xerosic saw the brainwave activity go in and out. He relayed the news to Lysandre.

“Not good. Now the brainwaves are getting weaker and then stronger all over again. Like a roller coaster.”

Lysandre only surveyed the scene with a glance. As for Fuji he held out hope that his daughter would be alive again.

“Please, Mewtwo... bring her back.”

Just then, Xerosic took notice of a different force at work. His face widened in interest as he spoke up.

“Lysandre! Something else just came up!”

“What is it?”

“It’s an energy signature! It’s coming from above!”

“What? Where is that coming from?”

“These results could only mean one thing... this must be Xerneas’ doing!”

Lysandre and Fuji both became surprised as they gasped.

Meanwhile, n the mindscape, Ambertwo held closely to Mewtwo, feeling conflicted as she watched it hold onto her like a frightened child would hold a pillow after a nightmare. She also felt something warm around her. She wondered if Mewtwo was doing this. But somehow, she had a feeling it wouldn’t matter for much longer.

“Mewtwo... I really wish I could stay with you longer, but... I just can’t.”

“Don’t say that! Please, don’t say that! I can’t let you go away! I won’t let you!”

“I don’t think you can decide that, Mewtwo. I’m still just a copy. So I...”

Before Ambertwo could finish, she felt that energy signature, her body beginning to fade back into view. She couldn’t believe her luck. And frankly, neither would Mewtwo. It was all still new to him.

“Huh? What’s going on?”

Ambertwo looked back at her hands as the mindscape began to show her remember place again. This time, it was in much greater clarity, like it was in the daytime. A smile began to form on her face as she answered.

“I think I can stay a little longer after all.”

Ambertwo and Mewtwo then began to hug each other tightly, their arms holding each other as the latter became puzzled.

“Amber... what’s this?”

Ambertwo looked back at Mewtwo and explained as she nestled against it.

“It’s a hug. It’s how you let your friend know you’ll be okay.”

Mewtwo began to smile amidst its tears before it spoke with joy.

“I... I like that. So much...”

“Me, too...”

In that moment, the background began to shine as bright as the sun; possibly more so. Ambertwo and Mewtwo held each other tightly as the light began to overwhelm them, knowing now for sure that they’ll meet again.

In the lab, the same result was happening. But Amber’s tank was glowing just as brightly like it did before. After a time, though, the glimmer faded away. And in place of the bright light that once occupied the tank, Ambertwo now took its place. Granted, she was in her natural state, but her arms and legs were arranged around her unmentionables. Lysandre stared at the miracle in awe before he turned to Xerosic for confirmation.

“Xerosic, how are Ambertwo’s vitals?”

Xerosic took a look back at the monitor and was completely astounded as he delivered the news.

“I... I don’t believe it. Ambertwo has stabilized again. In fact, hers and Mewtwo’s brainwaves are in sync.”

Fuji knew for certain what it meant as a heartfelt smile, born out of a goal finally achieved was finally upon him.

“Amber... welcome back.”

Lysandre saw them smile on his face and felt his heart lift somewhat. It was a touching reunion to say the least. He placed his hand upon Fuji’s shoulder before he spoke.

“It seems I owe you congratulations, doctor. You managed to recreate life.”

Fuji looked back at his recreated daughter with a smile as he replied.

“And you made this possible. Thank you, Lysandre.”

Lysandre only shook his head before he corrected the doctor.

“Actually, I’m not the one you should thank for this miracle. That right belongs to Xerneas.”

Up above, the stag had done its work, having given life to a once empty land with grass now having occupied it. And amidst the grass, there laid a flower in bloom. The staff then walked away as the smaller Pokémon looked on. While it walked away, one of the small Pokémon, though it was slightly bigger than the others and had a red core at its chest, became puzzled. It wondered what reason there could’ve been for the Stag to do what it did. However, it knew that one thing was certain. Whatever life it saved, it could surely be of vital importance to Kalos in the near future. But for what purpose...? For now, only the Watcher knows.

It is as one usually says, one man's trash is another man's treasure. But in this case, one man's quest for resurrection is another man's chance for a redemption. In your universe, Dr. Fuji agreed to work with Giovanni, the leader of Team Rocket, and Lysandre was overwhelmed by people's overflowing demands for relief from their sorrows, and sought to end all life apart from Team Flare's to create his ideal World of Peace. But in this universe, Dr. Fuji reached out to Lysandre Labs from the Kalos region for his research, having heard tales of a Pokemon capable of restoring life. Presented with such an opportunity to help the world more efficiently, Lysandre agreed on the condition of getting a sample of Mew from the Kanto region to create the World's strongest Pokemon that will help create a World of Peace. And Ambertwo is given a new lease on life. And for whatever reason, Xerneas bestowed this second chance to the copy. And her very existence will alter the fate of Kalos as you know it...

So, what do you think? I said a long time ago that I'd make a prologue for my Pokemon fanfic, and here it is, in the form of a What if? scenario. The prologue itself will come soon, and the story of it will be called "Amber and the Flames of Conviction". I hope you like it.
