Description Striders (Altipoda gigantica)

Named for their tall forms and large gates, Striders are herbivorous browsers. One of their characteristic features is their long feeding tentacle and raised front legs.

-Feeding

They feast on large amounts of the mushroom tree-like Saproform’s fleshy tops. Their jaws have grooves that allow them to “chew” on the fleshy vegetation. Their feeding tentacles help grab onto vegetation that is too high.

-Life cycle

Newborn Striders are nowhere near as big as their fully grown parents. And would be easy prey to steppe predators.

Striders carry their egg-sack with their front limbs, even after the eggs hatch they carry the young for half of a year. During this period the young will grow very fast, eventually the mother will stop carrying them. They will stay by the mother for the rest of the year, at which point they may be fully grown. Then they will leave to find a mate.

-Communication

Striders have vocal chords in their throat. Because of their lack of sight communication with other Striders is important. The calls can also be used to scare off predators, who would avoid their distinctive call.

Striders themselves have small holes on their heads which provide excellent hearing.
