Description
Download for full-view!I decided to make a tutorial on how I make my animated avatars since I was asked today.
Both programs I use are free for download, but note that the free version of Graphicsgale does not allow you to animate. That's what I use GIMP for.
The icon I made can be found here .

F.A.Q
Q: "I can't move the heart without moving the entire layer in GIMP. How do I solve this?"
A: Simple!
I select that which I want to move and copy it.
Then, I delete what I have selected and paste what I've just copied.
That way you get that part on a floating layer that you can manipulate as you like, until you decide to flatten it onto the layer you just copied the piece from.

Please do not trace the image that I use in my tutorial, be original and design something yourself.
And if you create something using this tutorial, link me back to it. I'm curious to see what you guys can create.
Icons created using this tutorial
Have fun!

That's odd... o.O
And you're sure you were using the pencil tool, not the color replacing-tool? I've made that mistake lots of times before.

This is really weird... I haven't encountered a problem like it before, so I don't think I can help. Maybe you can try uninstalling and reinstalling?

Hey. Could you please help me. I followed your tutorial, and I saved it how you said to, it became a GAL file and it won't upload anywhere, what do I do?

Hardrockangel In reply to BluWinterWolf [2011-01-24 22:44:50 +0000 UTC]
Ah, you should've saved it as a .png file.
.gal is the file-type that only associates with Graphics gale, in the same way a .psd file only associates with Photoshop. I hope that clears up the confusion?

Sry for totally spamming this, but whenever I move my little heart 9don't worry, I didn't copy you), it moves the whole thing! Help me!

No problem! As far as the question goes: I usually have one frame with the heart and select it there. Then I copy that part and paste it on the following layers. Doing so will allow you to move the heart, as then it will be on a floating layer until you position and flatten it onto the layer it needs to be on. I hope this makes sense?

Copy: Hold down "crtl" and "c" on your keyboard.
Paste: Hold down "crtl" and "v" on your keyboard.

I was doing good up until the playing of the animation and the fact that when I saved it as a gif that little window thing didn't pop up...*face-palm* Did you know I've been working on this all day???
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Hardrockangel In reply to rockred12 [2011-01-18 20:03:50 +0000 UTC]
Are you sure you saved it in GIMP as a .gif file? Because if you did not save it as such, it's only normal for the window not to pop up. And it takes a lot of time now, but I assure you once you get the basics down you'll be able to make things like this much faster.

That's just a matter of which program is assigned to open which files. Have you already tried uploading it to deviantART?

Hardrockangel In reply to rockred12 [2011-01-18 20:42:07 +0000 UTC]
... Avatars go in the following category. "Customization / Icons / Avatars / deviantART"
Could you please at least try to look before you ask? I find it hard to believe you've never uploaded a piece of art before, so the argument "It won't let me put it in any category" isn't quite valid. You can always upload something in any category (though you should always upload in the correct category).

Omg this tutorial is really helpful but now all I have to do is get my parents to let me download the programs because it says it can hurt my computer and they don't like fixing it for me...XD....

Hardrockangel In reply to rockred12 [2011-01-14 21:04:49 +0000 UTC]
The programs are both from a safe source, though by all means ask your parents first. It's always the best thing to do if you're uncertain about something.

You can basically use any program that supports .gif-files to animate, but I'm more familiar with gimp, which s why this tutorial focuses on GIMP. (:

Hardrockangel In reply to Snow-in-Spring [2011-01-10 14:34:41 +0000 UTC]
In Graphicsgale or in GIMP? Because in Graphicsgale you can erase by using white, in GIMP you just use the eraser tool. (:
