Description
I picture Thorax as being pretty much Invader Zim if Invader Zim was Spongebob: doesn't fit into his war-like society and doesn't really get why (to the annoyance of those around him).As for the drone stuff, I've always seen the changelings as a colony-insect-like species. It follows from this that all of the workers, soldiers, and queens are all female (this headcanon helped by how the minions all have a similar body build to the normal mares). Meanwhile, insect-colony males (aka 'drones') are pretty uninvolved in the day-to-day life of the hive: they reach maturity and then leave. New suitors for the queen may visit, but generally drones don't do much around the hive at all, let alone the one they were born in. Also, male ants don't have fathers: they hatch from unfertilised eggs. (Nature's so weird!
So here's part of a work-around for me to keep my headcanon without going AU with it.
Before anyone points it out: I'd accept that changeling culture is different from that of insects since they're clearly intelligent enough to have politics and logic and so on, but the media fails to accurately gender colony insects at pretty much every chance it gets, so I'm taking this one.Β Β
(Thank you to UltraTheHedgetoaster for giving me the encouragement to hold onto my headcanon no matter what.

I think so, but then I'm very attached to the "changelings = like colony insects" headcanon.

"You're a drone, drones leave the hive!" Ok... Suddenly it all makes sense.Β
Also, back when changelings looked cool.

Glad you like it!
And yeah, though I think I'd have loved the new changeling look if it was a new species rather than replacing the already-perfect classic changeling look. Not Thorax (his colours are awful), but some of the workers.

Personally, I don't think changelings have sexes at all. They take genders out of convention and because they wild magic that created them made them pale imitations of ponies, but those genders don't actually mean much. That's how I reconcile the apparent existence of male workers in the hive, including but not limited to Thorax.

Genderless, magically-created changelings certainly work, too, but I tend towards biology-based explanations as a personal preference.

Soldier C857 should probably invest in a "Welcome home (now please turn around and go away)" banner.

Thorax as Zim? I can accept that headcanon. Chrysalis is in charge and [because] she is The Tallest.

Sadly, as anyone who has worked in food service could tell you, Thorax would never stand a chance of surviving life in Foodcourtia.

Thorax, you're doing it wrong.
You forgot the eye-lashes!
Haha, "Thorax is Invader Zim, if Invader Zim was Spongebob".
Oh dear. And I suppose all the ponies are oblivious to him being a changeling.
All, except for a particularly suspicious pointy purple pony who's on to his "evil, love-collecting ways" and who is dead-set on "figuring out his Queen's evil schemes" when she meets him at the grocery store buying a sandwhich.
And always keep on believing in yourself and your headcanons!
...Well, and even besides that, since the "pre-technicolor changelings" era has a lot of traction and is well-established, it doesn't take too much mental gymnastics to divert paths from canon and dive right into this alternate universe.
You didn't hear this from me, but I'm working on a changeling fic set in an alternate universe continuity myself! More specifically, the Chrysalis timeline - and exploring the world of that, 200 years later.
β...You know, ponies have actually been romanticized as of late.β

Ah, I meant like Zim in how the other Irken invaders view him. This said, I wouldn't be surprised if he was bad at invading, too:
Is everyone ready?
Yes, ma'am!
Β Right, then our attack on Canterlot begi- WAIT, Thorax, what are you doing here, and what are you doing?
Β It's my OC! I look good, right?

I had heard - and did a double take on it! The original series hasn't aged well (though it still has that spark of why I watched it all in the first place), so hopefully they give this their all and make it the definitive Invader Zim thing!
Looks like some very stylish angles and smoother animation, so I'm hopeful! I wonder if it'll include the ending the series was meant to have? That sounded fun.

By the way - can you headcanoe your way into a 'verse where cheeselegs and colorbugs co-exist? Where the two types of 'lings could live alongside each other without the color of their chitin being indicative of their moral compass?

Since I'm a Cadence fan, I'd probably say it was when they took over the Crystal Empire at the start of TWaBA, or due to Thorax having lived there prior to taking over the hive. Since the Crystal Heart sprays out love-based magic, and the changelings feed (magically) on love, so they could have ingested magic that changed their overall look's natural inclination, like when ponies get crystalised.
Even if the Crystal Heart's magic wore off, they'd probably keep that form due to a want to conform and/or because it represents their 'reformed' state, but changelings who weren't there for the original change might just not do it without suffering stigma.

Yeah, that's a more easy-to-digest (see what I did there) version of my own headcanon with the throne having absorbed the magic of five alicorns, the bearers of Harmony, and a chaos spirit... plus the love-magic Thorax had absorbed from the Crystal Heart (which gave him a disproportionate magic boost compared to the other drones), and then the throne exploding, releasing all the energy into every nearby 'ling.
Well, I guess yours includes the possibility of change after the initial explosion of the throne, which makes it more canon-compliant.
So you're saying "rainbow colors" are entirely optional, and any cheeseleg 'ling willing to change could do so easily? But, doing it later gives a bad impression?
Seems like the opposite would be more likely, that anyling sporting the ol' "cheeseleg classic" look would be stigmatized as "following the old ways of Queen Chrysalis", regardless of their actual life philosophy.
I imagine it'd be awkward for any renegade changelings living among ponies already -- I doubt Thorax was the first who left the Hive. Especially awkward, if they'd already confided their true nature to somepony, and then the other ponies go "Hey, wait a minute... if you're so nice and selfless, then why are you still black?"
And before you know it, you've got a hapless black changeling running away from an angry mob, crashing right into a rainbow-changeling, and shenanigans happen.

I was thinking more that changelings there on the day see it as a medal-of-honour ("I was THERE when it HAPPENED!") type of deal, otherwise, at the very least, the "excuse me, do you have a moment to accept the love of Thorax?" stuff's a bit unavoidable.
This said, norm-changeling and post-changeling is a buddy-cop movie I'd watch!
