Description
I'm glad the episode brought this up, that people can't tell the difference is... Well, I guess I should see it coming but I rarely do.And then someone on a MLP site's comments said that terrapins are ALL freshwater turtles, including (their own example) SNAPPING TURTLES.
EDIT: Did some more research and apparently some tortoises HAVE been observed floating so that they can doggy paddle a little. The general agreement, however, is that most tortoises will sink like a rock. Those crazy testudines!
2022 EDIT: The comic got a dub by Agent0Fluffy !

I didn't mean to insult the animal, they're wonderful beasties and it's cool that you're into yours, it was just the equation to a terrapin that threw me. That's like comparing a ferret to a honey badger!

I know how that tortoise feels like. I can't swim either. Everytime I go inside a swimming pool I always end up sinking like a brick to the bottom (if it's without a life jacket). Who knows? I probably must have been a tortoise in my past life? I like this explanation you have given about turtles and tortoises. I so love these reptiles.

Oh, you're like Free!'s Rei then? That sounds like a pain! Still, it lets you relate to tortoises, and that's cool! They are awesome reptiles!

Either Tortoises can't swim, or they just can't breathe underwater.

Tortoises are too big and heavy to be able to swim and lack the flippers to be able to propel themselves in the water. And I don't think any reptile can breathe underwater.

Before I start, I do not mean any offence from this. I only wish to point out a few things and form a logical argument.
Firstly, just because I say "I wouldn't put it past her..." doesn't mean I think she would normally do it. I had a bad experience when I was a kid where my brother's friend drowned my pet tortoise, who was ironically named Tank, thinking he could swim... and this kid's personality matches Rainbow's to a T, including the fan-girl part... wait, he is worse than Rainbow in that respect, he is a fan-boy of a few sports teams and has actually stalked players...
Secondly, being a brony does not mean you love every character no matter what they do and can never imagine them doing something wrong, it is taking what they do at face value, learning to tolerating it, and still loving them anyway... even if it is in the fanon like this is. And on another note, being a true brony, above all else, means that you do not judge and discriminate other people, you tolerate them and respect them, even if they differ from yours. I respect that you believe I do not deserve the title of brony and I am calmly trying to change your mind.
Before I watched this miracle of a show, I was deep in depression, suffering from borderline clinical psychosis (brought on by my depression and myself being bipolar), on the verge of homicide and had attempted suicide 3 times. My friend asked me if I wanted to watch the first episode with him, and not caring about anything any more and looking for an excuse to skip a class in college, I said yes. By the time I got home from the college, I had watched all the episodes up to and including Feeling Pinkie Keen, and my outlook on life started getting better as I watched more and interacted with other bronies. I learned to love and tolerate and I was cured of my depression. If I had not watched the first episode, I estimate a week would have went by and I'd have killed myself or someone else. This show and fandom saved my life and since then I have put my heart and soul into becoming a true brony. And I don't deserve the title of brony?
Again, this is not meant to offend you, I only wished to make these points in the form of a calm and logical argument. ?
And sorry to anypony else who has to read this, especially to you for having to post this on one of your amazing pieces.

Tortoises are a kind of turtle. Q.E.D.

BETTER EXAMPLE: Canidae is called the "dog family" but not all of its members are dogs.
Same with equines; horse family, but zebras and such aren't horses.
Pandas are in carnivora but are not carnivores.
Et cetera.

Turtles are also a type of turtle in the way I was using the word.
The word can be used for the whole Testudine family, yes. The same word also refers to a select number of species just because the vegetarian land ones are tortoises and we don't have a general word for the others apart from "turtle" (and "terrapin" where appropriate).
That's the way I look at it. It's kinda small but important on the pet keeping side.
You could have started your list with "vertebrates" I think. Or just said "the Order Testudine are often all called turtles"? I guess you were going on the assumption that I have no grasp of basic biology but that seems a little unfair seeing as I use the word Testudine in the description.
